In this paper, we derive the impulse response of a fractional second order filter of the form (s2+as+b)−γ, where a,b?0 and γ>0. The asymptotic properties of the impulse responses are obtained. Moreover, based on the derived analytical impulse response, we show how to perform the discretization of the above fractional second order filter. This paper presents a finite element model based on the first order shear deformation theory to investigate the dynamic behavior of laminated composite plates traversed by a moving oscillator. The oscillator model is assumed to be consisting of two nodal masses that are connected by means of a spring-damper unit. The governing equations of motion of two sub-systems are separately integrated by applying the Newmark’s time integration procedure. Then, the obtained equations are coupled and the responses of system components are calculated in each time step. The accuracy of algorithm is verified by comparing the numerical results of static, free vibration and simplified moving force problems analysis with the available exact solutions and other numerical results in the literature. Also, the effects of mass ratio, damping ratio of system components, stiffness of suspension system, velocity and eccentricity of moving oscillator on dynamic responses is parametrically studied. Novel time–frequency techniques are proposed: the short time instantaneous higher‐order spectra (HOS) with adjustment to measured or known a priori time variation of the instantaneous frequency of transient signals. It is shown that the proposed transforms are more effective than the non‐instantaneous HOS (i.e. without adjustment to time variation of the instantaneous frequency) in recognizing a non‐stationary nonlinearity. In this paper, a class of the direct methods for discretization of fractional order transfer functions is studied in the sense of stability preservation. The stability boundary curve is exactly determined for these discretization methods.
