Idiom literality judgments in younger and older adults: Age-related effects in resolving semantic interference.

To study age effects in the resolution of idiomatic semantic ambiguity, we focus on decomposability, the extent to which a literal reading of an idiom's words shares meaning with its figurative interpretation. Younger and older adults judged whether decomposable and nondecomposable idioms and nonidioms had a literal interpretation. Older adults were slower at making literality judgments and more sensitive to conflicts between literal and figurative meanings. The results support claims of decompositional analysis of idioms during later processing stages and of obligatory activation of figurative meanings. Does Intentional Psychology Need Vindicating by Cognitive Science?

I argue that intentional psychology does not stand in need of vindication by a lower-level implementation theory from cognitive science, in particular the representational theory of mind (RTM), as most famously Jerry Fodor has argued. The stance of the paper is novel in that I claim this holds even if one, in line with Fodor, views intentional psychology as an empirical theory, and its theoretical posits as as real as those of other sciences. I consider four metaphysical arguments for the idea that intentional psychological states, such as beliefs, must be seen as requiring in-the-head mental representations for us to be able to understand their characteristic causal powers and argue that none of them validly generate their desired conclusions. I go on to argue that RTM, or some computational version thereof, is not motivated by appeal to the nature of cognitive science research either. I conclude that intentional psychology, though an empirical theory, is autonomous from details of lower level mechanism in a way that renders RTM unwarranted.

Source-to-Source Instrumentation for the Optimization of an Automatic Reading System

Recording address traces that occur during a program execution is a significant technique for computer performance analysis. This paper describes a software method for address tracing via the instrumentation of C based languages. All program transformations are performed at the language level. This approach, which differs from the usual methods, allows portable and flexible program instrumentation. This tool has been developed to make easier the memory optimization of LIREChèques, an automatic bank check reading system. Two applications of the tool are clearly identified: (i) data cache use optimization, (ii) dynamic memory use optimization.     

Clinical work with limited English proficiency clients: A phenomenological exploration.

Because of an increasing number of immigrants to the United States, many clinicians are faced with challenges and opportunities presented in working with clients through language interpreters. This article describes a phenomenological investigation focused on the processes related to therapy with limited English proficiency (LEP) clients through interpreters. The focus of the study was on clinicians' perceptions regarding professional and personal factors influencing services with LEP individuals, as well as contextual aspects of this work. In addition to highlighting specific characteristics and training needed for clinicians and interpreters who work with LEP clients, the readers will also learn about systemic changes that could improve the provision of mental health care to these clients.
