In this article, I examine an asynchronous online discussion about sexuality that lasted for several weeks and involved students at three different universities, seven of whom I interviewed. Although issues of gay rights and alliance groups were brought up, students focused primarily on the causes of homosexuality and whether homosexuality is natural or not, with one student insistently posting that homosexuality is unnatural because same-sex couples cannot experience “true love-making.” On one level the focus on the causes and naturalness of homosexuality (with few references to heterosexuality) reinforced the heteronormative binaries that often structure thinking and discussions about sexuality, a reinforcement that I initially found disheartening. However, in many ways I came to realize that this online thread still served important academic and personal purposes for students despite and because of being situated in binaries. Drawing from my reading of the posts and from discourse-based interviews with participants, I show that online discussions developed around heteronormative binaries can serve as catalysts for movement in students’ thinking about complex issues and that online spaces in particular are valuable forums for students to articulate and then complicate their understandings of issues relating to sexuality and sexual orientation.  相似文献

The safety of a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is verified by analyzing the system responses under normal and accidental conditions. This is done by resorting to a Best-Estimate (BE) Thermal-Hydraulic (TH) code, whose outcomes are compared to given safety thresholds enforced by regulation. This allows identifying the limit-state function that separates the failure domain from the safe domain.In practice, the TH model response is affected by uncertainties (both epistemic and aleatory), which make the limit-state function and the failure domain probabilistic.The present paper sets forth an innovative approach to identify the failure domain together with the safest plant operating conditions. The approach relies on the use of Reduced Order Models (ROMs) and K-D Tree.The model failure boundary is approximated by Support Vector Machines (SVMs) and, then, projected onto the space of the controllable variables (i.e., the model inputs that can be manipulated by the plant operator, such as reactor control-rods position, feed-water flow-rate through the plant primary loops, accumulator water temperature and pressure, repair times, etc.). The farthest point from the failure boundary is, then, computed by means of a K-D Tree-based nearest neighbor algorithm; this point represents the combination of input values corresponding to the safest operating conditions.The approach is shown to give satisfactory results with reference to one analytical example and one real case study regarding the Peak Cladding Temperature (PCT) reached in a Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) during a Station-Black-Out (SBO), simulated using RELAP5-3D.  相似文献

The phenomenon of linear flow of slurry in mined‐out areas of working face with large inclined angle is a crucial issue that hinders grouting for fire prevention. The traditional way of grouting exerts a poor effect on inhibiting coal spontaneous combustion, so it is in urgent need of a suitable grouting technology for fire prevention in mined‐out areas with large inclined angle working face. This paper brings up the consolidation grouting method for fire prevention for the first time and conducts a systematic study on the flow characteristics of slurry and sedimentation characteristics of slurry in mined‐out areas with large inclined angle working face. Consolidation slurry materials and their ratio are optimized by experiments. Test platform has been established, and effectiveness of the consolidation grouting for fire prevention has been simulated. The results show that settling velocity of yellow mud increases at first and then decreases as the concentration of consolidation slurry materials ascends. The optimum mass concentration is 0.2%–0.8%. The flow speed of mud is greatly reduced by laying consolidation slurry materials (The decreasing range is approaching 50%). The retention of yellow mud in mined‐out areas has significantly increased. Finally, technology in working site has been developed; meanwhile, compressed air and spray between frames have been used during the period of working face, and the consolidated way of expansion bags in wood crib to lay consolidation slurry materials has been adopted during the period of stopping work. Field application shows that CO concentration at upper corner decreases significantly and eliminates signs of spontaneous combustion. Besides, the flowing water becomes clearer, and effectiveness of the consolidation grouting is remarkable after laying consolidation slurry material band. Research results can provide theoretical guidance to technology for fire hazard prevention in mined‐out areas with large inclined angle. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
