An original wireless video transmission scheme called SoftCast has been recently proposed to deal with the issues encountered in conventional wireless video broadcasting systems (e.g. cliff effect). In this paper, we evaluate and optimize the performance of the SoftCast scheme according to the transmitted video content. Precisely, an adaptive coding mechanism based on GoP-size adaptation, which takes into account the temporal information fluctuations of the video, is proposed. This extension denoted Adaptive GoP-size mechanism based on Content and Cut detection for SoftCast (AGCC-SoftCast) significantly improves the performance of the SoftCast scheme. It consists in modifying the GoP-size according to the shot changes and the spatio-temporal characteristics of the transmitted video. When hardware capacities, such as buffer or processor performance are limited, an alternative method based only on the shot changes detection (AGCut-SoftCast) is also proposed. Improvements up to 16 dB for the PSNR and up to 0.55 for the SSIM are observed with the proposed solutions at the cut boundaries. In addition, temporal visual quality fluctuations are reduced under 1dB in average, showing the effectiveness of the proposed methods. 相似文献

Link adaptation is an effective tool to overcome fading effects in wireless links. However, time-varying adaptive transmission rate leads to queueing delay, and moreover, in practise, imperfect channel state information (CSI) is available for the transmitter to adapt its transmission rate and power. This article aims to consider practical constraints to enhance the link adaptation scheme. We reformulate and optimise buffer delay constrained throughput of a wireless link based on outdated noisy CSI. Discrete power adaptation is proposed, in which a limited number of feedback bits (just the index of transmission power level) is required, while the performance is improved compared to the constant power and is close to continuous adaptive power. A unified scheme is set-up, where constant, discrete or continuous adaptive power transmission is utilised considering average or instantaneous bit error rate constraints based on imperfect CSI. In this paper, two novel energy-efficient rate adaptation schemes are presented. The proposed protocols use the Distributed
Power Control (DPC) algorithm to predict the channel state and determine the necessary transmission power which optimizes
the energy consumption. The first proposed rate adaptation scheme heuristically alters the modulation rate to balance the
energy-efficiency and the required throughput which is estimated with queue fill ratio. Moreover, the back-off scheme is incorporated
to mitigate congestion and reduce packet losses due to buffer overflows thus minimizing energy consumption. Consequently,
the nodes will conserve energy when the traffic is low, offer higher throughput when needed and save energy during congestion
by limiting transmission rates. The second rate adaptation scheme employs dynamic programming (DP) principle to analytically
select modulation rate and a burst size to be used during transmission. The proposed quadratic cost-function minimizes the
energy consumption while alleviating network congestions and buffer overflows. The proposed DP solution renders a Riccati
equation ultimately providing an optimal rate selection. The simulation results indicate that an increase in throughput by
96% and energy-efficiency by 131% is observed when compared to other available protocols, for example Receiver Based AutoRate
(RBAR).

The predominant use of today's networks is content access and distribution. Network Coding (NC) is an innovative technique that has potential to improve the efficiency of multicast content distribution over multihop Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) by allowing intermediate Forwarding Nodes (FNs) to encode and then forward data packets. Practical protocols are needed to realize the benefits of the NC technique. However, the existing NC-based multicast protocols cannot accurately determine the minimum number of coded packets that a FN should send in order to ensure successful data delivery to the destinations, so that many redundant packets are injected into the network, leading to performance degradation. In this paper, we propose HopCaster, a novel reliable multicast protocol that incorporates network coding with hop-by-hop transport. HopCaster completely eliminates the need for estimating the number of coded packets to be transmitted by a FN, and avoids redundant packet transmissions. It also effectively addresses the challenges of heterogeneous multicast receivers. Moreover, a cross-layer multicast rate adaptation mechanism is proposed, which enables HopCaster to optimize multicast throughput by dynamically adjusting wireless transmission rate based on the changes in the receiver population and channel conditions during the course of multicasting a coded data chunk.
