Structured genetic algorithm for robust H∞ controlsystems design

A structured genetic algorithm (SGA) approach is developed for robust controller design based on the concept of an H^∞ loop-shaping technique and the method of inequalities. Such an SGA is capable of simultaneously searching the orders and coefficients of the precompensator and postcompensator for the weighted plant. It is, therefore, not necessary to predefine the order of compensators as in usual practice. A multiple objective ranking approach is also incorporated so that the design criteria of extreme plants can be easily achieved. The effectiveness of such a technique is illustrated by a high-purity distillation column design example

Nonlinear Kerr interactions between modulated waves propagating ina single-mode fiber

The interactions induced by the nonlinear refractive index in a single-mode optical fiber (Kerr effect) between a modulated wave and a carrier wave have been investigated for amplitude shift keying (ASK), frequency shift keying (FSK), and phase shift keying (PSK). The theoretical analysis, based on a time-domain solution, exploits the well-known formalism of self-phase modulation to describe the propagation of the input electric field in the fiber. The theoretical results were validated experimentally for amplitude- and phase-modulated waves with heterodyne detection techniques. These experiments mimic a coherent transmission system and allow the measurement of the spectrum of each of the waves that participate in the nonlinear interaction     

Modeling and design optimization of switched reluctance machine byboundary element analysis and simulation

Nonlinear boundary element analysis provides a more accurate and detailing tool for the design of switched reluctance machines than conventional equivalent-circuit methods. Design optimization through more detailed analysis and simulation can reduce development and prototyping costs and time to market. Firstly, magnetic field modeling of an industrial switched reluctance machine by the boundary element method is reported in this paper. Secondly, performance prediction and dynamic simulation of motor and control design are presented. Thirdly, magnetic forces that cause noise and vibration are studied, to include the effects of motor and control design variations on noise in the design process. Testing of such a motor in the NEMA 215-Frame size is carried out to verify the accuracy of modeling and simulation     

Prognostic factors of primary liver cancer

To investigate the prognostic factors of primary liver cancer (PLC) and improve the long-term results, 1,248 cases of PLC were analysed. Univariate analysis demonstrated that discovery approach, staging of PLC, original gamma-GPT, resection, radical resection, original AFP, tumor size, tumor number, and tumor capsule have very significant effects on prognosis of PLC (all P < 0.001); cirrhosis, HBsAg, local resection, and tumor embolus in portal vein were also significant difference (all P < 0.05); age, sex, original AFP, hepatitis, and differentiation of PLC cells were no significant difference (all P > 0.05). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that original gamma-GPT, radical resection, tumor size, and tumor number were the most significant prognostic factors (all P < 0.001). Some aspects improving long-term survival were discussed.     

Designing the MPC105 PCI bridge/memory controller

The MPC105 peripheral component interconnection bridge/memory controller provides a platform-specification-compliant bridge between Power PC microprocessors and the PCI bus. With it, designers can create systems using peripherals already designed for a variety of standard PC interfaces. This bridge chip also integrates a secondary cache controller and high-performance memory controller that supports DRAM or synchronous DRAM and ROM or flash ROM     

Thermal conductivity of a Kondo superconductor in the gapless state

The thermal conductivity coefficient for a Kondo superconductor in the gapless state is obtained within the framework of the Matsuura, Ichinose, and Nagaoka theory. By expanding the heat current correlation function appearing in the Kubo formula for the thermal conductivity in powers of the order parameter, analytical expressions for the thermal conductivity to second power in the order parameter are obtained. The thermal conductivities for bothT _KT _c 0 andT _KT _c 0 superconductors are obtained.
