Thermally and plastically induced residual strains in textured Zircaloy-2 plate

The residual intergranular strains in textured Zircaloy-2 plate samples induced by cooling from 823 K to ambient temperatures, by cold-rolling by 1.5% and 25% and by deforming in tension by 1.5% were measured by neutron diffraction. The strong rolling texture, which gives rise to two ideal orientations, permitted the interpretation of much of the data in terms of strain tensors for the two orientations. The experimental results were compared with calculations based on the elasto-plastic self-consistent model with no adjustable parameters. Close agreement was obtained for samples in the as-cooled state and deformation in tension by 1.5% but the agreement is less satisfactory for cold-rolling.

This paper introduces the concept of the temporal think tank™ (T3™), a temporary in-house research center, based on case studies with a highly automated global manufacturer and in various small-sized manufacture (SME's). The T3™ brings individuals from across the organization together in a team setting in which they are charged to look at the future, develop their decision-making skills, and use entrepreneurial thinking to incubate new processes and/or products. After an appropriate time in the temporal think tank™, the individuals are asked to return to their regular positions to implement the best practices and best ideas and doing so spur the organization forward. At intervals, the temporal think tanks™ can be reconvened, or reconstituted with new participants. This approach prepares technology champions for the SME, who can return to the organization with a fresh outlook and renewed energy to keep the enterprise at the peak of efficiency and effectiveness.

Hybrid charge control for stick-slip piezoelectric actuators

The article describes an analog electronic circuit for driving stick-slip piezoelectric linear actuators. The task for the amplifier is to provide a high-voltage asymmetric sawtooth-like signal and feed it into a capacitive load. Generation of excessive heat must be avoided while maximizing the slew rate. In order to guarantee a steady translation, the hysteretic behaviour of the piezoelectric material must be compensated. Combination of a charge control scheme with switching is proposed as an efficient solution. Laboratory experiments confirm the superiority of this tailored solution over other existing techniques based on versatile linear voltage amplifiers.
