A new variety of low-linolenic rapeseed oil; Characteristics and room-odor tests

Two Canadian rapeseed oils, “Westar” and “low-linolenic”, supplied by the Canola Council were studied and compared with a French rapeseed. The linolenic acid content of the low-linolenic variety is about 3%. This drop in the C18∶3 is completely compensated for by an increase in the C18∶2. Seventy-two percent of the triglycerides with at least one linolenic chain disappeared. A strong increase in the OOL and OLL was observed. The room-odor tests showed that the “low-linolenic” had a significantly higher odor score than the French rapeseed and the “Westar”, both of these being very similar. A fruity odor dominated in the “low-linolenic”, and the fishy painty odors were particularly reduced.     

Particle flow control by induced dipolar interaction of superparamagnetic microbeads

Magnetic particles diluted in liquid agglomerate in rod-like particle arrays if an external homogeneous magnetic field is applied. This work introduces a method to specifically exploit particle–particle interaction to obtain flow control of magnetic particles without changing the motion state of the carrier liquid. Experiments show the possibility to uncouple the particle flux from the motion state of liquid. We show how this method may be applied to design a microfluidic geometry in which the particle flow in a specific direction is either enabled or suppressed by the relative orientation of the fluid velocity and the external field.     

ADC FASTBUS 12 Bits-96 Channels (ID : F6829)

The 96 input channels are multiplexed to six (12 bits) converters in such a way that adjacent channels are driven to different chips. The maximum conversion time is 65 ?s. Common analog threshold for zero suppression is available with possible choice of neighbours to be converted. The threshold action can be disabled by external input command (or CSR # 0 status). S.R. and broadcasts are implemented.     

Challenges in the capture and dissemination of measurements from high-speed networks

The production of a large-scale monitoring system for a high-speed network leads to a number of challenges. These challenges are not purely technical but also socio-political and legal. The number of stakeholders in such monitoring activity is large including the network operators, the users, the equipment manufacturers and, of course, the monitoring researchers. The MASTS project (measurement at all scales in time and space) was created to instrument the high-speed JANET lightpath network and has been extended to incorporate other paths supported by JANET(UK). Challenges the project has faced included: simple access to the network; legal issues involved in the storage and dissemination of the captured information, which may be personal; the volume of data captured and the rate at which these data appear at store. To this end, the MASTS system will have established four monitoring points each capturing packets on a high-speed link. Traffic header data will be continuously collected, anonymised, indexed, stored and made available to the research community. A legal framework for the capture and storage of network measurement data has been developed which allows the anonymised IP traces to be used for research purposes.     

New simple method for measuring the mode spot size in monomode fibres

The equivalent step index (ESI) parameters associated with single-mode fibres can be evaluated by observing the changes in transmitted power on the far field when a Ronchi ruling is inserted between the end face of the fibre and a detector collecting the output intensity. Measurements as a function of wavelength allow one to determine the cutoff wavelength, ESI parameters for short lengths of fibre and effective cutoff wavelength for long lengths.

Patients free from occlusal dysfunction rarely have their teeth together. But, when occlusion does occur (i.e., swallowing), the contacts should be simultaneous and in such a manner as to direct the vector of force down the long axis of the tooth or implant. The incline planes should not touch.     

Feasibility demonstration of low pump power operation for 1.48 mu m diode-pumped erbium-doped fibre amplifier module

An optimisation of the erbium-doped fibre greatly improves the 1.48 mu m pumping efficiency. The amplifier exhibits 26.2 dB fibre gain for 8 mW launched pump power and 20.2 dB gain for only 5.2 mW pump power, giving an outstanding 3.9 dB/mW gain coefficient.<>     

Insular carcinoma of the thyroid. Apropos of a case and review of the literature

We present a new case report of "Insular" thyroid carcinoma. The first series was published, in 1984, by Carcangiu et al. The propensity for local recurrence and early distant metastases explains the poor prognosis of this carcinoma and demands aggressive therapy at the time of diagnosis. This includes radical surgery, radiotherapy with possible chemotherapy. Clinical and pathological arguments suggest that this carcinoma could be an intermediate stage in the process of loss of differentiation of some thyroid neoplasms.     

Decision-making tools for real-time control of the French EHV power system

The decision-making tools recently implemented on the online computers of the national control centre of Electricité de France are presented. These computerized tools are: state estimation, security analysis, generation dispatch and interactive load-flow calculations. They allow a better security assessment and enhancement of the power system and also contribute to a minimization of operating cost. They use the most advanced numerical and computational techniques now available in this field of application.
