Abstract

This article reports findings of a study of how leaders of virtual information systems development teams improve team trust and cooperation by managing adaptation of information and communications tools. Results indicate how Theory X (command and control) and Theory Y (facilitate and support) styles of leadership enable and hinder effective outcomes.  相似文献

This paper presents a simple model of an AI (artificial intelligence) arms race, where several development teams race to build the first AI. Under the assumption that the first AI will be very powerful and transformative, each team is incentivised to finish first—by skimping on safety precautions if need be. This paper presents the Nash equilibrium of this process, where each team takes the correct amount of safety precautions in the arms race. Having extra development teams and extra enmity between teams can increase the danger of an AI disaster, especially if risk-taking is more important than skill in developing the AI. Surprisingly, information also increases the risks: the more teams know about each others’ capabilities (and about their own), the more the danger increases. Should these results persist in more realistic models and analysis, it points the way to methods of increasing the chance of the safe development of AI.  相似文献

This paper discusses the relation between intelligence and motivation in artificial agents, developing and briefly arguing for two theses. The first, the orthogonality thesis, holds (with some caveats) that intelligence and final goals (purposes) are orthogonal axes along which possible artificial intellects can freely vary??more or less any level of intelligence could be combined with more or less any final goal. The second, the instrumental convergence thesis, holds that as long as they possess a sufficient level of intelligence, agents having any of a wide range of final goals will pursue similar intermediary goals because they have instrumental reasons to do so. In combination, the two theses help us understand the possible range of behavior of superintelligent agents, and they point to some potential dangers in building such an agent.  相似文献

Highly porous PTFE membranes are currently being used in facial reconstructive surgery. The present study aims at improving this biomaterial through creating a more bioactive surface by introducing ionic groups onto the surface. The unmodified PTFE membrane does not induce inorganic growth after immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF) for up to 4 weeks. Copolymeric grafting with acrylic acid (AAc) by means of gamma irradiation and subsequent in vitro testing in SBF reveals that this copolymer initially acts as an ion-exchange material and subsequently induces growth of a calcium phosphate phase (Ca/P=2.7) when large amounts (15%) of pAAc are introduced onto the membrane surface. This copolymer is not expected to function well from a biomaterials perspective since SEM showed the pores on the surface to be partly blocked. In contrast, the surface of monoacryloxyethyl phosphate (MAEP)-modified samples is altered at a molecular level only. Yet the modified materials are able to induce calcium phosphate nucleation when the external surface coverage is 44% or above. The initial inorganic growth on these membranes in SBF has a (Ca+Mg)/P ratio of 1.1 (presumably Brushite or Monetite). The secondary growth, possibly calcium-deficient apatite or tricalcium phosphate, has a (Ca+Mg)/P ratio of 1.5. This result is a promising indicator of a bioactive biomaterial.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the osteoinductive recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2, combined with a collagen carrier, could enhance bone formation when exposed to controlled amounts of tissue deformation. Chambers that allow for the multiple harvestings of tissue specimen were used. The devices were implanted in the tibial metaphyses of skeletally mature New Zealand White rabbits. A tissue ingrowth canal in each device either was left empty or filled with a collagen carrier with or without 0.6 microgram of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2. The tissue ingrowth canal was deformed cyclically during a period of 2 minutes daily, according to a previously described deformation protocol. The tissue that developed in the chambers was harvested every 3 weeks. Undecalcified histologic sections of each tissue sample were stained with trichrome and von Kossa stains and subjected to histomorphometric analysis. It was found that deformation decreased the area occupied by bone trabeculae in the empty chambers and carrier controls. The amount of bone formed in the chambers treated with bone morphogenetic protein 2 was significantly greater than that in the chambers subjected to micromotion and left empty or implanted with the collagen carrier. The amount of bone in chambers with motion and bone morphogenetic protein 2 was equal to that in chambers left empty and not subjected to micromotion. Qualitative histologic analysis of the bone formed with bone morphogenetic protein 2 revealed normal bone trabeculae. These findings indicate that bone morphogenetic protein 2 may be useful in augmenting bone formation in conditions that otherwise would favor the formation of fibrous tissue.  相似文献

Primary leukemic cells isolated from children (N = 681 ) with newly diagnosed B-lineage ALL enrolled on risk-adjusted treatment protocols of the Children's Cancer Group (CCG) were injected via the tail vein into 7-10 week old SCID mice. Leukemic cells from 104 of 681 patients (15.3%) were able to engraft and proliferate in one or more SCID mouse organs. These SCID+ patients were somewhat more likely than SCID patients to be older than 10 years of age (p = 0.03) and have WBC counts >20,000/microL (p = 0.04), but the groups were similar with respect to all other presenting features. Event-free survival (EFS) outcome at 3 years of follow-up was similar for SCID+ patients compared with SCID- patients (79.2%, SD = 5. 1% vs. 84.8%, SD = 2.8%; p = 0.20). Overall survival also was similar between the two groups (p = 0.93). This result was maintained within the subgroups of lower risk (N = 448) and higher risk (N = 233) patients. However, there were trends for poorer outcome among patients whose cells caused overt leukemia in SCID mice and infiltrated either 6 or more organs (p = 0.03), skeletal muscle (p = 0.0003), kidney (p = 0.05), or spleen (p = 0.06). Thus, engraftment of primary leukemic cells in SCID mice was not a significant predictor of outcome for the aggregate population of B-lineage ALL patients, the majority of whom were low risk, treated according to contemporary intensive chemotherapy programs of the CCG. However, development of disseminated overt leukemia and infiltration of SCID mouse skeletal muscle by primary leukemic cells from adjacent bone marrow may reflect a biologically more aggressive disease and identify patients at higher risk for treatment failure.  相似文献

The results point in the direction that an XLPE with an increased number of vinyl groups can be used to achieve a higher cable line speed, compared with present technology, without defined major drawbacks. The economic benefits of a higher output from a cable vulcanization line and the impact this would have on the possibilities in cable manufacturing justify further work in this field. We will continue our research and development in order to define the limits and possibilities of this technology  相似文献
