Factors Affecting Loadbreak Elbow Connector Switching Speeds

A test program to assess the factors affecting loadbreak elbow switching speeds was initiated after several field failures suggested that inadequate switching speeds are increasingly common, especially with higher voltage elbows. It was found that tool type greatly affects switching speeds, that loadbreak elbow condition affects the range of speeds attained with any tool, and that lineman chacteristics only minimally influence speeds. To date, none of the above factors are included in the ANSI/IEEE-386 test Standard. The results of these tests underscore the importance of incorporating additional parameters into switching test clauses in future revisions of the Standard.     

The Fadeogram, A Sonogram-Like Display of the Time-Varying Frequency Response of HF-SSB Radio Channels

A method is presented for displaying the time-varying transfer characteristic of communication channels, and is illustrated by showing in detail the behavior of an HF-SSB radio channel during one minute periods, under the various fading characteristics classified by USAEL. It is also demonstrated how this method aided study of the causes of errors in data received by digital modems.

Separable insulated connector loadbreak testing. I. The switchingcharacteristic and its implications

To facilitate assessments of in-service switching reliability, a second-generation switching characteristic has been developed for use during laboratory loadbreak tests. This switching characteristic is one step toward a realistic reliability assessment of separable connector switching. First-generation switching characteristics are compared to the newly developed characteristic to demonstrate that the latter stresses separable connectors more realistically. A laboratory test protocol using the switching characteristic is proposed

For pt.I see ibid., vol.7, no.2, p.554-9 (1992). A statistical analysis of the ANSI/IEEE loadbreak switching test shows that it cannot offer utilities reliability assurances. An alternative approach to loadbreak testing is presented. It utilizes the concepts of a generic switching reliability characteristic, composite system switching reliability (CSSR), and lower confidence limits to relate laboratory test performance to utility reliability needs

Dynamic HIV/AIDS parameter estimation with application to a vaccine readiness study in southern Africa

This paper proposes a procedure of parameter estimation for all parameters of the three-dimensional HIV model. The least square based procedure uses standard optimization routines to allow parameter extraction for individual patients. It is shown how additional information from outside a measurement dataset can be included in the estimation routine to increase the reliability and accuracy of parameter estimates. A dataset from 44 patients of Southern Africa is analyzed to find the set point and the time until set point for these patients together with an estimate of the model parameters with confidence intervals for the cohort. The procedure is also applied to a long-term dataset of the HIV/AIDS progression to find possible variations in parameters.     

Survival of Brucella spp. in mineral water, milk and yogurt

Knowledge of the number of organisms in a food product at the time of consumption is crucial to assess the risk from a deliberate contamination of food samples with Brucella. To date, very little data on the survival times of Brucella in different food matrices is available.This study was conducted to assess the survival times of Brucella spp. in water, milk and yogurt. These food products were inoculated with bacteria, serial dilutions of the food samples plated and the number of surviving bacteria counted.Under normal storage conditions Brucella survived in UHT milk for 87 days, for 60 days in water and less than a week in yogurt. Also, when milk was inoculated with low bacterial numbers, Brucella multiplied by five log units within three weeks.Further we could not confirm that a high fat content in food has a protective effect on Brucella survival. Brucella survived in 3.5% and 10.0% fat yogurt for four and two days, respectively.These results show that appropriate methods for the rapid detection of this pathogen from food matrices are required.
