AFM observation of polyethylene single crystals: selective handedness of screw dislocations in a chair type

The three-dimensional morphology of polyethylene single crystals grown from dilute solution has been examined by atomic force microscopy. Single crystals were deposited on a soft ground of aqueous solution of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) to avoid the collapse of thin lamellar crystals with thickness of 10 nm. The observation of single crystals on dried PVA clarifies the morphology of a chair type crystal as well as well-known hollow pyramidal type. It has been confirmed that the screw dislocations in the chair type follow a selection rule of the handedness in a manner to relieve the distortion in the chair type.     

CODIRO: A New System for Obtaining Data Concerning Consumer Behavior Based on Data Factors of High Interest Determined by the Analyst

The aim of this paper is to propose a new system for the strategic use of customer data that includes and integrates such differing data sources as company databases, mobile telephone networks and Internet data and is a consumer research support system for the discovery of new marketing opportunities. This system, called CODIRO, will be discussed in this paper using a case study of the effects on sales of processed food product television commercials. A system for verifying the validity of consumer behavior models will also be described and discussed. Use of the CODIRO analysis system makes it easy to introduce, into the analytic model, consumer attitude changes and in-store data of many types that have not been used to measure advertising and promotional activity effectiveness in the past.     

Lateral habits ofn-alkane single crystals

The lateral crystal habits ofn-alkanes (n-C _n H_2n+2) have been observed just below the melting points by optical microscopy forn=18, 19, 20, 22, 24, 34, 44, 50 and 65. The shape of the crystals depends on the crystal phase: circular in the rotator phase, lenticular in phase C, and diamond in the low-temperature phase. The rounding of the lateral shape can be explained in terms of thermal roughening of the lateral faces in the disordered phases at high temperature.     

Integrated-optic device for a fibre laser Doppler velocimeter

We first demonstrate an integrated-optic device for a fibre laser Doppler velocimeter, which consists of a waveguide interferometer and a frequency shifter in z-propagation Ti-diffused LiNbO3. The device is also pigtailed with a single-mode fibre to pick up a Doppler-shifted signal. Using the fabricated device, the velocity of a moving object was successfully heterodyne-detected with a signal/noise ratio of 30dB.     

Elution of copper from vermiculite with environmentally benign reagents

For the purpose of remediation of soils polluted by heavy metals, the use of some strong synthetic chelating agents such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) has been proposed. However, EDTA would not be considered as the preferential choice for the remediation of soil polluted with heavy metals like copper because of its nonbiodegradability and permanent residence in the natural environment. In the present work, some novel environmentally benign chelating agents, glucosamine hydrochloride, chito-oligosaccharide and -asparaginic-N,N-diacetic acid (ASDA) were screened to find alternatives to EDTA by investigating the elution of copper from vermiculite with these reagents and comparing their effectiveness with EDTA. The effects of suspension contact time, reagent concentration and equilibrium pH of the solution on the removal of copper were examined. A stoichiometric amount of EDTA can quantitatively remove copper in both acidic and neutral conditions. Chito-oligosaccharide was a slightly less-effective reagent under acidic conditions compared to EDTA, and an amount well in excess of stoichiometry is required to achieve the maximum removal of copper from vermiculite. Glucosamine hydrochloride shows a relatively weak ability for the liberation of copper. The elution behavior of ASDA was equivalent to EDTA in acidic and neutral media. It was concluded that ASDA is the best substitute for EDTA because of its similar high complexing ability and superior biodegradability.     

A novel therapeutic approach for rectal varices: a case report of rectal varices treated with double balloon-occluded embolotherapy

We present a patient with continuous melena, diagnosed as rectal varices bleeding. She had a history of esophageal varices, which was treated by endoscopic ligation therapy. Eight years after the treatment of esophageal varices, the continuous melena began. Colonoscopic examination showed that the melena was caused by rectal varices, which were so severe that they could not be treated by either endoscopic sclerotherapy or surgical devascularization. Taking into considering the overall risk of treating rectal varices, we chose the approach of double balloon-occluded embolotherapy (DBOE) with 5% ethanolamine oleate with iopamodol as a liquid embolic material. DBOE is one of the interventional radiology techniques (Morita et al., Acta Hepatol Jpn 1994;35:109-120), but in this case was a completely new and novel clinical procedure for rectal varices. After the DBOE therapy, the condition of rectal varices was markedly improved. Thus, DBOE might be a new tool for treating inoperable rectal varices.     

Hydroxyapatite crystal growth on calcium hydroxyapatite ceramics

Calcium hydroxyapatite (Ca-HAP) ceramics containing tricalcium phosphate (TCP) were soaked in three solutions: phosphate buffer, tris buffer, and simulated body fluid (SBF). Petal-like crystals of Ca-HAP were deposited on the Ca-HAP ceramics when (i) Ca-HAP ceramics contained -TCP, (ii) the soaking solution contained phosphate ion and (iii) the pH of soaking solution was higher than 7.3. These conditions facilitate the presence of HPO ₄ ^2– and Ca²⁺ ions, the latter from dissolution of -TCP. A well-defined X-ray diffraction pattern for the deposited Ca-HAP crystals indicates preferred growth of {002} planes. Slower crystal growth of Ca-HAP was found for SBF (pH=7.5) than in the phosphate buffer, due possibly to the lower phosphate ion content in SBF.     

Redox properties of CeO2 and Pt-Rh/CeO2 studied by TAP method

Redox properties of CeO₂ and Pt-Rh/CeO₂ were studied by temporal analysis of products (TAP) method using alternative pulses of CO and O₂. A portion of pulsed CO was oxidized to CO₂ and a portion of CO was adsorbed on the surface. Pulsing ¹⁸O₂ onto the catalyst which has surface species derived from CO, evolved CO₂ contained no ¹⁸O suggesting that the surface species will be carbonate ions.
