Photovaractor for remote optical control of microwave circuits

A photovaractor for the remote optical control of microwave circuits was studied. The photovaractor was fabricated as a p-i-n photodiode placed in a pigtailed fiber optical module. The study of the impedance in the frequency range up to 3 GHz in darkness and under illumination has shown that the photovaractor capacitance strongly depends on the incident optical power. The capacitance variation of the photovaractor diode under illumination is discussed     

Fine structure of a one-dimensional discrete point system

We consider a system of N points x ₁ < ... < x _N on a segment of the real line. An ideal system (crystal) is a system where all distances between neighbors are the same. Deviation from idealness is characterized by a system of finite differences ? _i ¹ = x _x+1 ? x _i , ? _i ^k+1 = ? _i+1 ^k ? ? _i ^k , for all possible i and k. We find asymptotic estimates as N ?? ??, k????, for a system of points minimizing the potential energy of a Coulomb system in an external field.     

Modes of “normal” and “deteriorated” heat exchange in the single-phase near-critical region in the turbulent flow of helium in tubes

The results of a study of heat transfer to helium in the single-phase near-critical region are presented. The boundaries of existence of the modes of normal and deteriorated heat exchange are established. Surface shape measurement of mirrors in the form of rotation figures by using point diffraction interferometer

The paper deals with the use of a point diffraction interferometer (PDI) to study the surface shape of rotation figures. The relations are given for the correspondence of the coordinates on the surfaces of an ellipsoid, a paraboloid and a hyperboloid as well as on an interferogram. Using PDI and Zygo white-light interferometer (WLI), we experimentally investigated the surface shape of the grazing incidence ellipsoid with the multilayer reflective coating on a wavelength of 0.154 nm with the following parameters: length is 55 mm, half-axis are 6 and 235 mm. The results coincided with an accuracy of 73 nm (RMS) without taking into account the PDI lateral resolution, and with an accuracy of 50 nm (RMS) with taking it into account, which ensures the local angles measurement accuracy of the ellipsoid-shaped reflecting surface at a level of 3 μrad. We think that this difference may be attributed to the limited lateral resolution of PDI and errors of frames stitching of WLI; nevertheless, we do believe that the PDI measurement accuracy is in the range of sub-μrad.     

Global modeling of hydrogen using GFDL-AM4.1: Sensitivity of soil removal and radiative forcing

Hydrogen (H₂) has been proposed as an alternative energy carrier to reduce the carbon footprint and associated radiative forcing of the current energy system. Here, we describe the representation of H₂ in the GFDL-AM4.1 model including updated emission inventories and improved representation of H₂ soil removal, the dominant sink of H₂. The model best captures the overall distribution of surface H₂, including regional contrasts between climate zones, when v_d(H₂) is modulated by soil moisture, temperature, and soil carbon content. We estimate that the soil removal of H₂ increases with warming (2–4% per K), with large uncertainties stemming from different regional response of soil moisture and soil carbon. We estimate that H₂ causes an indirect radiative forcing of 0.84 mW m^?2/(Tg(H₂)yr^?1) or 0.13 mW m^?2 ppbv^?1, primarily due to increasing CH₄ lifetime and stratospheric water vapor production.
