PURPOSE: Two types of glass wool were used to remove leukocytes in semen for evaluation of reactive oxygen species production by spermatozoa in oligozoospermic patients with leukocytospermia. METHODS: Semen samples were prepared using fine-structure glass wool (SpermFertil) and coarse-structure glass wool. In each treatment group, native semen was evaluated for sperm concentration, percentage motility, viability, leukocyte concentration, and production of reactive oxygen species. RESULTS: Electron microscopically, SpermFertil showed a higher number of leukocytes attached to the fibers compared to coarse-structure glass wool. Leukocytes in native semen and after glass wool filtration as determined by peroxidase cytochemistry confirmed this observation. Reactive oxygen species decreased from 45.303 counts/10(7) viable cells in native semen to 15.806 counts/10(7) cells in coarse structure wool and 7.465 counts/10(7) cells in Spermfertil, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Removal of leukocytes from semen of oligozoospermic patients by means of glass wool filtration is a useful method to distinguish production of reactive oxygen species by leukocytes versus sperm cells.  相似文献

In this letter, we suggest a new method for significantly enhancing the intrinsic bandwidth of a laser diode through the use of an injection locking technique. Our analysis shows that for moderate and high-injection levels, the bandwidth of a laser diode can be increased to several times its free-running bandwidth.  相似文献

A novel spectroscopy technique that uses parallel-plate waveguides for the characterisation of highly conductive materials in the terahertz (THz) frequency regime is presented. This guided-wave technique resolves some of the fundamental problems associated with standard THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) as applied to these optically dense materials. A family of CMOS-based active pixel image sensors (APSs) that are inherently compatible with the integration of on-chip signal processing circuitry is reported. The image sensors were fabricated using commercially available 2-μm CMOS processes and both p-well and n-well implementations were explored. The arrays feature random access, 5-V operation and transistor-transistor logic (TTL) compatible control signals. Methods of on-chip suppression of fixed pattern noise to less than 0.1% saturation are demonstrated. The baseline design achieved a pixel size of 40 μm×40 μm with 26% fill-factor. Array sizes of 28×28 elements and 128×128 elements have been fabricated and characterized. Typical output conversion gain is 3.7 μV/e- for the p-well devices and 6.5 μV/e- for the n-well devices. Input referred read noise of 28 e- rms corresponding to a dynamic range of 76 dB was achieved. Characterization of various photogate pixel designs and a photodiode design is reported. Sabeluzole, a new benzothiazole derivative, has been shown to be neurobiologically active preclinically and clinically appears to exert beneficial effects on memory. In this study, sabeluzole (5 or 10 mg twice daily vs. placebo) was investigated in patients with probable Alzheimer's disease over 1 year, with assessments of cognitive performance and structural changes. Cognitive performance was measured using the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale periodically during treatment. Potential structural correlates in the frontal horn, caudate, third ventricle and hippocampal regions were examined by obtaining computerized tomographic (CT) images before and after treatment. Patients receiving sabeluzole evidenced greater stability than did placebo-treated patients in some cognitive measures. CT measures showed no significant changes from baseline, but some weak associations were found between relative preservation of cognitive function and smaller structural declines in the third ventricle and hippocampus. Cognitive outcome measures suggest that sabeluzole may have potential in slowing the cognitive deterioration of Alzheimer's disease. Furthermore, the method used to explore potential benefits on a morphologic level, although negative in this study, could yet have potential.  相似文献

The influence of laser power, wave length, and specimen temperature on laser assisted atom probe analyses for Mg alloys was investigated. Higher laser power and lower specimen temperature led to improved mass and spatial resolutions. Background noise and mass resolutions were degraded with lower laser power and higher specimen temperature. By adjusting the conditions for laser assisted atom probe analyses, atom probe results with atomic layer resolutions were obtained from all the Mg alloys so far investigated. Laser assisted atom probe investigations revealed detailed chemical information on Guinier-Preston zones in Mg alloys.  相似文献

In this paper the electron-beam lithography conditions and the nanofabrication process are described for current-perpendicular-to-plane (CPP) pillar devices with 30 nm critical dimensions. This work combines a RAITH-150 tool with a negative e-beam resist (AR-7520) so that dense nanopillar arrays are patterned fast into large area samples. The resist dilution and coating conditions are optimized, aiming at its thickness reduction down to 80 nm. The exposure parameters are tuned for different geometries and dimensions, so that features down to 30 nm are exposed with good accuracy (+/- 1.9 nm) and reproducibility. The complete integration of these nanoelements into CPP devices involved electron beam lithography, ion milling for pattern transfer and chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP). Results on devices incorporating very low resistance-area (R x A) MTJ films deposited by Ion beam assisted deposition are shown, for MTJ stacks with R x A down to 0.8 omega x microm2. Device characterization includes electrical measurement of the pillar resistance and the transfer curves under dc magnetic fields (TMR up to 40%).  相似文献
