Current Diagnosis and Treatment Options for Cutaneous Adnexal Neoplasms with Follicular Differentiation

Neoplasms derived from follicular tissue are extremely rare. Clinically, they are reported as non-symptomatic, slow-growing nodules. These lesions are mainly benign, but the malignant type can occur. Mainly middle-aged people (50–60 years of age) are affected. These carcinomas are mainly localized on the head and neck or torso. They can be locally aggressive and infiltrate surrounding tissue and metastasize to regional lymph nodes. In the minority of cases, distant metastases are diagnosed. Quick and relevant diagnosis is the basis of a treatment for all types of tumors. The patient’s life expectancy depends on multiple prognostic factors, including the primary tumor size and its mitotic count. Patients should be referred to a specialized skin cancer center to receive optimal multidisciplinary treatment. This article tries to summarize all the information that is currently available about pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment methods of follicular tumors.     

Estrogen Receptors Mediated Negative Effects of Estrogens and Xenoestrogens in Teleost Fishes—Review

Estrogen receptors (ERs) play a key role in many biochemical and physiological processes, that are involved in maintaining organism homeostasis. At the most basic level, they can be divided into nuclear estrogen receptors and membrane estrogen receptors that imply their effect in two ways: slower genomic, and faster non-genomic. In these ways, estrogens and xenoestrogens can negatively affect animal health and welfare. Most of the available literature focuses on human and mammalian physiology, and clearly, we can observe a need for further research focusing on complex mutual interactions between different estrogens and xenoestrogens in aquatic animals, primarily fishes. Understanding the mechanisms of action of estrogenic compounds on the ERs in fishes and their negative consequences, may improve efforts in environmental protection of these animals and their environment and benefit society in return. In this review, we have summarized the ER-mediated effects of xenoestrogens and estrogens on teleost fishes metabolism, their carcinogenic potential, immune, circulatory, and reproductive systems.     

Room temperature continuous-wave operation of GaInNAs/GaAs VCSELsgrown by chemical beam epitaxy with output power exceeding 1 mW

The authors present a near 1200 nm wavelength vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) the active region of which is formed by GaInNAs/GaAs quantum wells grown by chemical beam epitaxy. Room temperature continuous-wave operation has been demonstrated with a high slope efficiency of 0.23 W/A, a high output power of over 1.0 mW, and a singlemode output power of 0.34 mW. The fabricated devices with different aperture sizes show low threshold currents of 1.2-2.1 mA and a record low threshold current density of 2.6 kA/cm² in GaInNAs VCSELs

Stress effect for polarisation control of surface emitting lasers

To control the electric polarisation of output light in surface emitting (SE) lasers, the stress effect on the resonance model of SE lasers with an elliptical holed region is investigated. For the first time, polarisation switching by external stress has been observed and the relation between the polarisation characteristics and the structural dependence on stress clarified.<>     

Quantitative determination of domperidone in rat plasma by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection

A sensitive and selective analytical method for the determination of domperidone in rat plasma is described. The procedure involves liquid-liquid extraction followed by reversed-phase high-performance chromatographic analysis with fluorometric detection at 282 nm for excitation and 328 nm for emission. The detection limit was 1 ng ml(-1) using 1 ml of plasma. This assay procedure should be useful for the pharmacokinetic study of domperidone in small animals such as rats.     

Analysis of multiple indicator dilution curves for estimation of renal tubular transport parameters

A model is developed to estimate the renal tubular secretory parameters by the multiple indicator dilution (MID) technique. The model allows the calculation of influx (from plasma space to tubular cell), efflux (from tubular cell to plasma space) and sequestration (from tubular cell to luminal side) rate constants. A program using the MID-statistical analysis with least squares fitting (SALS) system for the estimation of these parameters is presented. A trapezoid rule and a non-linear least squares regression were used to carry out definite integrals of cubic spline function and least squares fitting, respectively. The system presented seems to be useful for the precise and rapid estimation of the tubular secretory rate constants.     

GaInAs-GaInNAs-GaInAs intermediate layer structure for longwavelength lasers

Proposes two new structures, the GaInAs-GaInNAs intermediate layer (IML) and the GaInN_xAs graded wells, which show better optical properties than the commonly used GaInNAs-GaAs rectangular quantum-wells. A 1240-nm emitting IML laser has been achieved with a low-threshold current density (200 A/cm²/well) and a relatively high characteristic temperature (T_o=100 K). The IML structure is very promising for long wavelength GaAs-based laser applications     

Wide bandwidth of over 50 GHz travelling-wave electrodeelectroabsorption modulator integrated DFB lasers

A travelling-wave electrode electroabsorption modulator integrated distributed feedback laser to overcome the CR-induced bandwidth limitation is developed. A bandwidth much wider than 50 GHz is achieved. A 40 Gbit/s eye-diagram is observed. The device has a potentiality for future 100 Gbit/s transmission
