In this paper, the impact of outliers on the performance of high-dimensional data analysis methods is studied in the context
of face recognition. Most of the existing face recognition methods are based on PCA-like methods: faces are projected into
a lower dimensional space in which similarity between faces is supposed to be more easily evaluated. These methods are, however,
very sensitive to the quality of the face images used in the training and in the recognition phases. Their performance significantly
drops when face images are not well centered or taken under variable illumination conditions. In this paper, we study this
phenomenon for two face recognition methods, namely PCA and LDA2D, and we propose a filtering process that allows the automatic
selection of noisy face images which are responsible for the performance degradation. This process uses two techniques. The
first one is based on the recently proposed robust high-dimensional data analysis method called RobPCA. It is specific to
the case of recognition from video sequences. The second technique is based on a novel and effective face classification technique.
It allows isolating still face images that are not very precisely cropped, not well-centered or in a non-frontal pose. Experiments
show that this filtering process significantly improves recognition rates by 10 to 30%.

This paper investigates a new front-end processing that aims at improving the performance of speech recognition in noisy mobile
environments. This approach combines features based on conventional Mel-cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs), Line Spectral Frequencies
(LSFs) and formant-like (FL) features to constitute robust multivariate feature vectors. The resulting front-end constitutes
an alternative to the DSR-XAFE (XAFE: eXtended Audio Front-End) available in GSM mobile communications. Our results showed
that for highly noisy speech, using the paradigm that combines these spectral cues leads to a significant improvement in recognition

A general procedure is presented for the design of analogue or digital filters having arbitrary specifications in the frequency domain. The algorithm developed uses a simple technique for constraining the pole zero locations, for stability and minimum phase considerations, which is far more elegant than methods used by previous workers.1 This constraint procedure yields a unified approach to the design of both digital and analogue filters. The method employed is that of minimizing a square-error criterion using the Fletcher–Powell2 conjugate gradient minimization routine. A robust sliding mode controller for a grid‐connected photovoltaic source is proposed in this paper. The objective of the presented control scheme is to force both the output voltage of the photovoltaic PV source and the power factor at the inverter output to follow a certain trajectory reference. The main idea is to apply the robust sliding mode controller directly to the nonlinear state model of the system composed of the PV source and the inverter with its input and output filters. In order to operate the PV system at the maximum power point and to satisfy the environmental factors, such as solar irradiance and temperature, we included a rigorous maximum power point tracker based on an artificial neural network. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed control scheme. In addition, we show that the grid current satisfies the harmonic limits of the IEEE standard for interconnecting distributed energy sources with electric power systems. 相似文献

Very few attempts, if any, have been made to use visible light in corneal reflection approaches to the problem of gaze tracking. The reasons usually given to justify the limited application of this type of illumination are that the required image features are less accurately depicted, and that visible light may disturb the user. The aim of this paper is to show that it is possible to overcome these difficulties and build an accurate and robust gaze tracker under these circumstances. For this purpose, visible light is used to obtain the corneal reflection or glint in a way analogous to the well-known pupil center corneal reflection technique. Due to the lack of contrast, the center of the iris is tracked instead of the center of the pupil. The experiments performed in our laboratory have shown very satisfactory results, allowing free-head movement and no need of recalibration. 相似文献
