Star-like auto-configurable layouts of variable radius for visualizing and exploring RDF/S ontologies

The visualization of ontologies is a challenging task especially if they are large. In this paper we propose a visualization approach which is based on star-like graphs of variable radius which enables users to gradually explore and navigate through the entire ontology without overloading them. The star-like graphs are visualized using a Force Directed Placement algorithm (FDP) specially suited for RDF schemas whose configuration parameters can be adjusted interactively by the end-user via an intuitive on-screen tool bar. In addition, and since each star-like graph exhibits different graph features, we propose a novel automatic configuration method for the FDP algorithm parameters that is based on a number of quality metrics (area density and verticality of subclass hierarchies) and corresponding corrective actions. The experimental evaluation showed the quality of the yielded layout is significantly improved and the proposed approach is acceptably fast for real-time exploration. The user study showed that users prefer these views and perform various very common tasks faster.     

Convection in the Rayleigh-Bénard Flow with all Fluid Properties Variable

Dark Matter Garden: A case study in algorithmic modelling and digital fabrication of complex steel structures

This paper is focusing on the application of algorithmic modelling techniques to represent, design and fabricate gravitational lens effects (as described by the astrophysical theory of the ‘Dark Matter’) in form of a garden pavilion for the Royal Horticultural Society's, Chelsea Flower Show. In addition, this research-led project is exploring the challenges occurring in the use of three-dimensional CNC bending technologies. This is a research by design project and its method is based on a design framework, which incorporates a generative algorithm linked to feedback loops related to parameters such as laws of gravity, plot dimensions, materiality, positioning of the plants, construction and fabrication, requirements and cost as well as the overall aesthetics. Its findings are highlighting accomplishments and failures of a file to factory design and fabrication process, which incorporates algorithmic modelling and digital manufacturing techniques in a collaborative environment. The ‘Dark Matter Garden’ installation was awarded the gold medal for ‘Best Fresh Garden’ by the Royal Horticultural Society in 2015.     

Disseminated tuberculosis: A neglected entity in immunocompromised hemodialysis patients

End‐stage renal disease is considered a factor predisposing to increased risk of tuberculosis with frequent extrapulmonary localization. Although extrapulmonary tuberculosis has been observed for decades, disseminated tuberculosis, a major cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised hosts, remains rather neglected. We report an unusual case of an immunocompromised patient with a late diagnosis and delayed treatment of genitourinary tuberculosis that subsequently led to the diagnosis of vertebral and miliary tuberculosis (disseminating tuberculosis). Therefore, increased awareness is warranted from physicians dealing with hemodialysis patients in order to avoid delays in diagnosis and treatment initiation.

The nonsimilar laminar wall plume in a constant transverse magnetic field

The flow of a laminar wall plume in a constant transverse magnetic field is considered. The results are obtained with the numerical solution of the governing equations and cover both small and large ξ values and Prandtl numbers from 0.01 to 100. The similar wall plume has been investigated in the past but the nonsimilar has not been treated until now and it is solved here for the first time.
