Attraction of moth species of Tortricidae,Gelechiidae, Geometridae,Drepanidae, Pyralidae,and Gracillariidae families to field traps baited with conjugated dienes

Field surveys of a series of conjugated diunsaturated straight-chain primary alcohols, acetates, and aldehydes (dienes), including the 3,5-dode-cadienyl, 8,10-dodecadienyl, 3,5-tetradecadienyl, 8,10-tetradecadienyl, 9,11-tetradecadienyl, and 10,12-tetradecadienyl primary alcohols, acetates, and most aldehydes, and the related monounsaturated straight-chain primary alcohols, acetates, and aldehydes (monoenes), including the 3-dodecadienyl alcohol and acetates, attracted the following species from the title families. Diene attractants have been demonstrated for at least onePhyllonorycter sp.,Chionodes lugubrella (Fabr.),Leptostales ferruminaria (Zell.),Drepana bilineata (Pack.),Pyrausta fodinalis (Led.),Notocelia purpurissatana Heinr.,Phaneta alterana Heinr. Monoene attractants were demonstrated forHedya separatana (Kft.),Cydia fletcherana (Kft.),Barbara mappana Free.,Ancylis burgessiana (Zell.),Ancylis nubeculana Clem.,Evippe prunifoliella Cham.,Phlyctaenia coronata tertialis (Gn.), aChionodes sp., a Gelechiidae sp., and an unidentifiedPhyllonorycter sp. Replicated field experiments showed attraction-inhibition relationships for most species. Electroantennagram data are presented forLeptostales ferruminaria andDrepana bilineata.     

The Effects of H2O, CO and CO2 on the H2 Permeance and Surface Characteristics of 1 mm Thick Pd80wt%Cu Membranes

The hydrogen permeance of 1 mm-thick Pd_80wt%Cu foils was measured in the presence of equimolar mixtures of H₂ with CO, CO₂ or H₂O over the temperature and total pressure ranges of 623–1,173 K and 0.62–2.86 MPa, respectively. In all cases, permeance losses at 623 and 738 K were very modest. At higher temperatures, more significant decreases in membrane permeance were observed with the highest reduction of about 50% occurring when macroscopic carbon deposition occurred on the membrane surface during H₂–CO exposure at 908 K. The more worrisome effects of exposure to these gases, however, were the micron-scale surface defects observed at 908 and 1,038 K. Although the 1 mm thick disk membranes retained their mechanical integrity, such defects could cause catastrophic failure of ultra-thin, Pd–Cu membranes (1–5 μm thick) deposited on porous substrates.     

Rehabilitation of disorders of the breaking of voice

The adolescent's breaking of the voice is the result of the substitution of the chest voice (or heavy mechanism) for the head voice (or light mechanism). In cases of late breaking, the voice is abnormally high-pitched and feeble, often with a distorted timbre, while the larynx is normal and pubescent. Such people are generally not fully aware of their voices' real nature. Therapy classically resorts to laryngeal manipulations, of which a new technique is put forward. Another therapeutic approach is based, on the one hand, on critical listening compared with a control male voice, thus enabling the subject to become aware of his own voice, and, on the other hand, on high intensity work which helps passing from head to chest voice.     

Parallel associative combinator evaluation II

A new evaluation model for SK combinator expressions is presented and used as a basis for the design of a novel processor. The resulting machine architecture resembles a dataflow ring, but executions are constrained to be fully lazy. An automatic dynamic load sharing mechanism for a distributed multiprocessor architecture is suggested, and initial simulation results are presented.     

Creativity in non‐routine jobs: The role of transformational leadership and organizational identification

An increasing number of individuals work in jobs with little standardization and repetition, that is, with high levels of job non‐routinization. At the same time, demands for creativity are high, which raises the question of how employees can use job non‐routinization to develop creativity. Acknowledging the importance of social processes for creativity, we propose that transformational leaders raise feelings of organizational identification in followers and that this form of identification then helps individuals to develop creativity in jobs with little routinization. This is because organizational members evaluate and promote those ideas as more creative, which are in line with a shared understanding of creativity within the organization. To investigate these relationships, we calculated a mediated moderation model with 173 leader–follower dyads from China. Results confirm our hypotheses that transformational leadership moderates the relationship between job non‐routinization on employee creativity through organizational identification. We conclude that raising feelings of social identity is a key task for leaders today, especially when working in uncertain and fast developing environments with little repetition and the constant need to develop creative ideas.     

Structure–property relationships for sulfonated poly(butylene terephthalate)

Structure–property relationships have been developed for sulfonated poly(butylene terephthalate) copolymers. The compositional variables investigated were sulfonate content, molecular weight, and polymer endgroup composition, and the fundamental polymer properties evaluated were melt viscosity, crystallization kinetics, and impact strength. It was found that all compositional variables significantly affect all of the polymer properties of interest. The most interesting effect is the influence of polymer endgroup composition on polymer properties. The trends indicate that the carboxylic acid endgroups form intermolecular interactions with sodium sulfonate groups, resulting in a decrease in the strength of intermolecular ionic interactions between sodium sulfonate groups. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Combinatorial materials research applied to the development of new surface coatings: II. Process capability analysis of the coating formulation workflow

A combinatorial process has been developed for the high throughput production and evaluation of surface coatings. The workflow designed for the production of arrays of liquid coatings involves the robotic transfer of aliquots of solutions of raw materials to an array of glass vials and mixing of the coatings using an unconventional magnetic stirring process. An investigation of the capability of the workflow to accurately and repeatedly prepare coating arrays was conducted as a function of solution viscosity and aliquot size. In addition, mixing capability was evaluated as a function of solution viscosity, total solution volume, and mechanism of stirring. Overall, the results of the study indicated that adequate accuracy and repeatability of the coating preparation process can be achieved as long as raw material solutions are designed such that viscosity is below about 250 cP and aliquot sizes are above about 75 μl. With regard to mixing capability, total solution volume was found to have a profound affect as did the stirring mechanism.     

Fatty acids of asparagus seed oil

Summary Asparagus seed, Mary Washington variety, was found to contain 14.7% of glyceride oil having iodine value 135.1, saponification value 185.5, and unsaponifiable matter 1.46%. The oil was converted to methyl esters, and the mixed esters were separated by fractional distillation and low-temperature crystallization. The acids were identified by chemical and physical methods. The % composition of the fatty acids is estimated from the data as follows: palmitic 3, linoleic 57, oleic 27, stearic 2, eicosenoic 1.5, arachidic 0.6, undetermined 9. The oil is somewhat similar to corn oil in composition. It has at least 2% of acids of the C₂₀ series, which have not been reported previously in this plant family (Liliaceae).
