This article charts the history of the reception, reproduction and appropriation of a single image that has recently become a kind of "gay icon"--the Figure d'Etude in the Louvre, painted by Hippolyte Flandrin in 1835. Initially no more than a neo-classical academic exercise, the formal emptiness of this picture meant that it could be re-invested and reinscribed with new meanings and new titles at every turn. Emblematic of the anxious visibility/invisibility of the newly discovered homosexual body during a period when the gaze still had to be kept a dark secret, Flandrin's image only "came out" in its later photographic reworkings by Frederick Holland Day and Baron von Gloeden. After being reproduced for a specifically homosexual audience early this century, the popular Romantic pose of the young man curled-up in profile became a standard one, reappearing recently in the photographs of Robert Mapplethorpe. The inactive, abject and inward-turned isolation of the figure with its narcissistic self-absorption makes it, in my view, a profoundly negative stereotype of the gay gaze and the homosexual body. Flandrin's figure nonetheless appears today on gay merchandise world-wide as a sign of our separate and secluded subject positions and our community's unwillingness to radically alter older imposed and inherited classical stereotypes. 相似文献

Hfq is a pleiotropic regulator that mediates several aspects of bacterial RNA metabolism. The protein notably regulates translation efficiency and RNA decay in Gram-negative bacteria, usually via its interaction with small regulatory RNAs. Previously, we showed that the Hfq C-terminal region forms an amyloid-like structure and that these fibrils interact with membranes. The immediate consequence of this interaction is a disruption of the membrane, but the effect on Hfq structure was unknown. To investigate details of the mechanism of interaction, the present work uses different in vitro biophysical approaches. We show that the Hfq C-terminal region influences membrane integrity and, conversely, that the membrane specifically affects the amyloid assembly. The reported effect of this bacterial master regulator on membrane integrity is discussed in light of the possible consequence on small regulatory RNA-based regulation. 相似文献

This paper presents a new circuit architecture for turbo decoding, which achieves ultra high data rates when using product codes as error correcting codes. This architecture is able to decode product codes using binary BCH or m-ary Reed Solomon component codes. The major advantage of our full-parallel architecture is that it enables the memory block between each half-iteration to be removed. In fact, the proposed architecture opens the way to numerous applications such as optical transmission. Functional MRI (fMRI) may be possible without a priori models of the cerebral hemodynamic response. First, such data-driven fMRI requires that all cerebral territories with distinct patterns be identified. Second, a systematic selection method is necessary to prevent the subjective interpretation of the identified territories. This paper addresses the second point by proposing a novel method for the automated interpretation of identified territories in data-driven fMRI. Selection criteria are formulated using: 1) the temporal cross-correlation between each identified territory and the paradigm and 2) the spatial contiguity of the corresponding voxel map. Ten event-design fMRI data sets are analyzed with one prominent algorithm, fuzzy c-means clustering, before applying the selection criteria. For comparison, these data are also analyzed with an established, model-based method: statistical parametric mapping. Both methods produced similar results and identified potential activation in the expected territory of the sensorimotor cortex in all ten data sets. Moreover, the proposed method classified distinct territories in separate clusters. Selected clusters have a mean temporal correlation coefficient of 0.39+/-0.07 (n=19) with a mean 2.7+/-1.4 second response delay. At most, four separate contiguous territories were observed in 87% of these clusters. These results suggest that the proposed method may be effective for exploratory fMRI studies where the hemodynamic response is perturbed during cerebrovascular disease. 相似文献

The joint action of two rectangular direct and constant fields (electric and magnetic) on molten potassium nitrate, produces local temperature variations in the Lorentz force direction. This thermal effect is studied as a function of the magneto-electric stress and also of the temperature of the molten electrolyte. A powdered mixture of dried herbs, “Panamrutham”, is sold in India for the preparation of “herbal drinking water”. The hot water extract of this herbal mixture gave lipid peroxidation (LPO), cyclo‐oxygenase (COX‐1 and ‐2) enzyme and human tumor cell proliferation inhibitory activities between 25 and 250 μg/mL. The bioassay‐guided purification of the water extract afforded a novel compound (1), along with phenolics (2, 4, 6, and 7) and sesquiterpenoids (3 and 5). The isolates were evaluated for LPO, COX‐1 and ‐2 enzyme and human tumor cell proliferation inhibitory activities. At 25 μg/mL, compounds 1–7 inhibited LPO by 22–73% and COX‐1 and ‐2 enzymes by 3–14% and 14–74%, respectively. Compounds 5 and 6 at 25 μg/mL showed growth inhibition of colon, gastric, lung, breast and central nervous system human tumor cell lines by 60 and 67, 43 and 60, 24 and 64, 34 and 65, 6 and 27%, respectively. Compounds 2, 4 and 7 displayed weak or moderate growth inhibition of colon, gastric and breast human tumor cell lines. This is the first report on the LPO inhibitory activities of compounds 1 and 3–7 and the COX and tumor cell proliferation inhibitory activities of compounds 1, 3–5 and 7. 相似文献

The rheological properties in solution, in shear and in uniaxial elongation of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) reacted together with hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) were investigated. Two different PET grades, of low and high molecular weights, were compounded with sub‐ to over‐stoichiometric concentrations of HBPs of second and fourth pseudo‐generation, and subsequently subjected to a solid‐state polycondensation (SSP). The formation of microgels, which occurs at high HBP concentration, gave rise to a large increase in melt elasticity and a related decrease in melt strength. At low HBP concentrations, the complex viscosity of the unreacted HBP/PET was considerably reduced, thus demonstrating a lubrication effect of the HBP molecules. During SSP, the intrinsic and shear viscosities exhibited a gradual increase, which was similar for both PET and HBP/PET blends, and was correlated to an increase in molecular weight, through linear‐chain extension and branching reactions. The elongational viscosity of the reactive blends was also increased as a function of reaction time, and this increase was much larger in the case of the HBP/PET blends. A 400% increase in melt strength of the PET was obtained by combining SSP and trace amounts of an HBP of second generation, without any decrease in drawability. 相似文献

Previous studies have demonstrated that some selected amino monoacids and amino diacids can function as leaving groups in the polymerase‐catalyzed incorporation of deoxynucleotides into DNA. Among these, the iminodiacetic acid phosphoramidate of deoxyadenosine monophosphate (IDA‐dAMP) represents an interesting example, as it could overcome some of the problems observed when using L ‐aspartic acid as the leaving group, that is, poor chain elongation. We have now synthesized and evaluated a series of IDA‐dAMP analogues that bear either an extended aliphatic chain in the amino acid function, or a phosphonic acid moiety (substituting for the carboxylic acid function). Among these compounds, the nucleotide with an iminodipropionic acid leaving group (IDP‐dAMP) was identified as the best substrate; the excellent single incorporation (91 % conversion to a P+1 strand at 50 μM ) was at a substrate concentration ten times lower than that used for IDA‐dAMP). This nucleotide also presented improved kinetics and elongation capability compared to IDA‐dAMP. The analogues with T, G, and C base moieties were also investigated for their incorporation ability with HIV‐1 RT. The incorporation efficiency was found to decrease in the order A>T>G>C. The properties of the iminodipropionic acid as the leaving group surpass those of previously evaluated leaving groups; this acid will be a prime candidate for in vivo testing. 相似文献

The zirconium acetamidinate catalyst {Cp*Zr(Me)2[N(Et)C(Me)N(tBu)]} (Cp* = ?5-C5Me5) was used to synthesize both random and block copolymers based on 4-methyl-1-pentene (4M1P) and 1-pentene. The polymers have been characterized by NMR spectroscopy, SEC, DSC, high temperature HPLC and CRYSTAF. Unexpectedly, the yields and molecular weights decreased with increasing amounts of 1-pentene. The reason for this behavior is that 1-pentene occasionally undergoes 2,1-misinsertions trapping the catalyst in a dormant state. These 2,1-misinsertions do not seem to occur with the bulky 4M1P (branched α-olefin). Adding a small amount of ethylene reactivates the catalyst. Unlike most semi-crystalline polymers, the density of the crystalline phase of isotactic P4M1P can be lower than of the amorphous phase, when crystallized under very high pressures. To characterize this peculiar behavior of 4M1P-based polymers, various samples have been subjected to Pressure-Volume-Temperature (PVT) measurements. While the P4M1P homopolymers and block copolymers show the expected decrease in specific volume upon crystallization, the 4M1P-rich random copolymers proved not to vary in specific volume under the same conditions. 相似文献
