This article provides a review of trade-offs and synergies of bioenergy within the water–energy–food security nexus, with emphasis on developing countries. It explores the links of bioenergy with food security, poverty reduction, environmental sustainability, health, and gender equity. It concludes that applying the nexus perspective to analyses of bioenergy widens the scope for achieving multiple-win outcomes along the above aspects.  相似文献

The morphology of hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite films is known to strongly affect the performance of perovskite‐based solar cells. CH3NH3PbI3‐xClx (MAPbI3‐xClx) films have been previously fabricated with 100% surface coverage in glove boxes. In ambient air, fabrication generally relies on solvent engineering to obtain compact films. In contrast, this work explores the potential of altering the perovskites microstructure for solar cell engineering. This work starts with CH3NH3PbI3‐xClx, films with grain morphology carefully controlled by varying the deposition speed during the spin‐coating process to fabricate efficient and partially transparent solar cells. Devices produced with a CH3NH3PbI3‐xClx film and a compact thick top gold electrode reach a maximum efficiency of 10.2% but display a large photocurrent hysteresis. As it is demonstrated, the introduction of different concentrations of bromide in the precursor solution addresses the hysteresis issues and turns the film morphology into a partially transparent interconnected network of 1D microstructures. This approach leads to semitransparent solar cells with negligible hysteresis and efficiencies up to 7.2%, while allowing average transmission of 17% across the visible spectrum. This work demonstrates that the optimization of the perovskites composition can mitigate the hysteresis effects commonly attributed to the charge trapping within the perovskite film.  相似文献

A valuation scenario was designed using a contingent-valuation approach and presented to decision makers in business firms in Kenya’s Lake Naivasha basin to test how applicable a water fund might be as a potential financing mechanism for a payment for water-related ecosystem services scheme. The findings indicate that measuring a firm’s willingness to invest in ecosystem services could help determine whether a firm would invest and engage with other stakeholders to pool their investments in ecosystem services. Linking the institutional decision-making behaviour of a firm and its willingness to invest in a water fund is the novelty of this article.  相似文献

Previous studies suggested an increase in the proportion of calcium phosphates (CaP) of the total phosphorus (P) pool in soils with a long-term poultry manure application history versus those with no or limited application histories. To understand and predict long-term P accumulation and release dynamics in these highly amended soils, it is important to understand what specific P species are being formed. We assessed forms of CaP formed in poultry manure and originally acidic soil in response to different lengths of mostly poultry manure applications using P K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. Phosphorus K-edge XANES spectra of poultry manure showed no evidences of crystalline P minerals but dominance of soluble CaP species and free and weakly bound phosphates (aqueous phosphate and phosphate adsorbed on soil minerals). Phosphate in an unamended neighboring forest soil (pH 4.3) was mainly associated with iron (Fe) compounds such as strengite and Fe-oxides. Soils with a short-term manure history contained both Fe-associated phosphates and soluble CaP species such as dibasic calcium phosphate (DCP) and amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP). Long-term manure application resulted in a dominance of CaP forms confirming our earlier results obtained with sequential extractions, and a transformation from soluble to more stable CaP species such as beta-tricalcium calcium phosphate (TCP). Even after long-term manure application (> 25 yr and total P in soil up to 13,307 mg kg(-1)), however, none of the manure-amended soils showed the presence of crystalline CaP. With a reduction or elimination of poultry manure application to naturally acidic soils, the pH of the soil is likely to decrease, thereby increasing the solubility of Ca-bonded inorganic P minerals. Maintaining a high pH is therefore an important strategy to minimize P leaching in these soils.  相似文献

The influence of thiourea, l(?) cysteine and glycine on the mechanisms and kinetics of copper electrodeposition from aqueous solution at pH 1.00 ± 0.05 and 25 °C was investigated using several complementary techniques. Rotating disc electrode current density measurements and the kinetic parameters calculated from Koutecký–Levich analysis indicated that at 5 × 10?3 M thiourea and l(?) cysteine addition the electro-reduction of Cu(II) was significantly inhibited. By contrast, upon similar addition of glycine, the reduction current density increased and the equilibrium potential moved towards more positive values. Microscopic imaging studies of the resulting Cu films showed that thiourea and l(?) cysteine led to fine-grained deposits, whilst glycine addition resulted in a coarser deposit. It is suggested the additives substantially altered the electron and mass transfer processes during electrodeposition. Both thiourea and l(?) cysteine appear to act by specific chemical interactions that lead to CuS co-crystallization. On the other hand, glycine is believed to act by mediating the Cu(II) to Cu(I) reduction process.  相似文献

This study discusses the effects of water abstractions from two alternative sources on the available water volume around Lake Naivasha, Kenya: the lake itself and a connected aquifer. An estimation of the water abstraction pattern for the period 1999–2010 is made and its effect on the available water volume in Lake Naivasha and its connected aquifer is evaluated using a simple water balance modeling approach. This study shows that accurate estimates of annual volume changes of Lake Naivasha can be made using a simple monthly water balance approach that takes into account the exchange of water between the lake and its connected aquifer. The amount of water that is used for irrigation in the area around Lake Naivasha has a substantial adverse effect on the availability of water. Simulation results of our simple water balance model suggests that abstractions from groundwater affect the lake volume less than direct abstractions from the lake. Groundwater volumes, in contrast, are much more affected by groundwater abstractions and therefore lead to much lower groundwater levels. Moreover, when groundwater is used instead of surface water, evaporation losses from the lake are potentially higher due to a larger lake surface area. If that would be the case then the overall water availability in the area is more strongly affected by the abstraction of groundwater than by the abstraction of surface water. Therefore water managers should be cautious when using lake levels as the only indicator of water availability for restricting water abstractions.  相似文献

The corrosion wear behaviors of a Fe-based bulk metallic glass Fe66.7C7.0Si3.3B5.5P8.7Cr2.3Al2.0Mo4.5 against Si3N4 ceramic ball was studied in a 3.5% NaCl solution and using a unidirectional tribometer with the ball-on-disk configuration. During friction process, the Fe-based BMG showed tribochemical reaction with the 3.5% NaCl solution. Wear occurred mainly through an abrasive wear mechanism and corrosive wear effects. The overall average friction coefficient was in the range of 0.18 to 0.25 according to the test conditions and slightly decreased with increasing load. The wear resistance of the BMG was better than that of the conventional bearing steel, demonstrating the potential of the BMG as a viable engineering alloy for anti-corrosive wear applications.  相似文献

Direct and selective screening of aerosol particulate matter for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs) is achieved using laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (LDI TOF) mass spectrometry. Desorption and ionization of collected aerosol particulate matter was accomplished using pulsed UV radiation at 266 nm. PAHs were detected in positive ion spectra, while nitro-PAHs were selectively detected in negative ion spectra. Direct laser desorption ionization circumvents extraction procedures necessary for HPLC or gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analyses, and such screening offers potential cost saving by identifying samples which contain too little PAH for GC/MS analyses to be productive. Applicability of the LDI TOF method was demonstrated by collecting aerosol particles of less than 2.5 mu m aerodynamic diameter (PM 2 . 5) on Teflon filters from inside an urban bus terminal. Sampling of small air volumes (0.32-0.98 m3) was sufficient for LDI TOF analysis. Positive ion mass spectra of all collected aerosol samples exhibited peaks attributed to a wide range of PAHs. Of primary importance, selective ionization and detection of less abundant and more toxic nitro-PAHs is demonstrated in the negative ion spectra. GC/MS analyses of duplicate filters confirmed laser desorption ionization analyses and assisted identification of specific PAH isomers.  相似文献

Application efficiency is the primary criterion for furrow irrigation system design and management. In this study, the application efficiency function of a furrow irrigation system is analyzed. The application efficiency function is unimodal with respect to inlet flow rate and furrow length. Optimality conditions are derived for the cases in which application efficiency is a function of either furrow length or flow rate. Simple and sufficiently accurate equations and design and management rules are developed.  相似文献
