The low temperature photoluminescence under bias (PLb) and the photoconductivity (PC) of a p-i-n GaInNAs/GaAs multiple quantum well sample have been investigated. Under optical excitation with photons of energy greater than the GaAs bandgap, PC and PLb results show a number of step-like increases when the sample is reverse biased. The nature of these steps, which depends upon the temperature, exciting wavelength and intensity and the number of quantum wells (QWs) in the device, is explained in terms of thermionic emission and negative charge accumulation due to the low confinement of holes in GaInNAs QWs. At high temperature, thermal escape from the wells becomes much more dominant and the steps smear out.  相似文献

The differences between urban and rural streams regarding hydrological process, channel morphodynamics and ecosystem functioning have been highlighted by a number of studies in recent decades. The need to understand lotic ecosystem functioning in these environments at scales relevant to individual organisms has led to research focusing on hydraulic composition and structure over small areas of channel bed. In this study we map and analyze the hydraulic biotope composition of two urban and two rural stream reaches in the North Carolina (USA) Piedmont to determine if urban flow regimes and attendant channel modification processes might translate into important differences in hydraulic environment, and if so, what those differences are. Hydraulic biotope assemblages were found to vary only moderately in diversity per unit stream length between sites, but were distinctly different in composition. One important control on the differences between rural and urban streams was found to be the localized incision of urban channels into bedrock and saprolite. Resistant rock outcrop in the beds of urban streams creates rapid and riffle biotopes and long stretches of upstream pool habitat by impoundment. Urban reaches were found to be more homogeneous than rural reaches in hydraulic composition and were dominated by pools. Rural reaches, characterized by copious sandy alluvium in the bed, were dominated by runs or glides. Quantitative differentiation of biotopes based on four hydraulic indices generally yields coherent associations, although these may vary in content. Comparisons between hydraulic and biotic diversities suggest relationships favoring biotic functional group aggregation over species richness‐based indices of diversity. Because the majority of published hydraulic diversity analyses are based on coarse‐bed streams, further study of hydraulic diversity in streams with finer substrate is likely to be beneficial. The present study examines cognitive processes of low-power group members in an intergroup power situation. An unbalanced power relationship was established between two groups and stability and size of a power discrepancy were manipulated. Seventy-two participants learned information about, and competed in a game against, a high-power outgroup. Significant main effects were obtained in an analysis of covariance of the amount of cognitive processing for stability of a power distribution. Low-power group members in unstable conditions recalled more attributes than participants in stable conditions. Implications for the importance of a low-power group member's perceptions of whether or not an opportunity exists to change the power situation are discussed. Blending is a very effective method for manufacturing new polymeric materials; however, the process used to combine two polymers can influence the physicochemical properties of the final product. As such, the aim of this study was to investigate how the rapid removal of a solvent from a composite by the spray drying of partially hydrolyzed poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) altered the solid‐state properties of the material compared to casting the blend within a film. Although thermal analysis showed that PVP acted as a plasticizer, reducing the melting point of PVA, spray drying the product rather than using a film‐casting procedure improved its solid‐state stability (increasing the glass transition) and resulted in the formation of a second crystalline phase within the material. Spectroscopic studies suggested that the manufacturing‐induced variance in the solid‐state properties of the PVA/PVP blends originated from structural differences in the composite caused by the processing method employed to form the blend. Although blending should still be considered a viable method of generating novel polymeric material, this study illustrated that through careful manipulation of the actual manufacturing process, the solid‐state properties of the product can be altered. The General Ability Index (GAI) is a composite ability score for the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children—Fourth Edition (WISC–IV) that minimizes the impact of tasks involving working memory and processing speed. The goal of the current study was to compare the degree to which the Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) and the GAI predict academic achievement in math and reading among a group of 88 children tested for gifted programming. All students had significant variability among their index scores on the WISC–IV. Whereas both the FSIQ and GAI significantly predicted standardized achievement test scores in reading and math, the FSIQ explained more of the variance. In sequential regression analyses, both working memory and verbal comprehension scores explained significant, unique variance in reading and math scores. However, measures of processing speed and perceptual reasoning did not account for significant amounts of variance in achievement scores over and above measures of working memory and verbal comprehension. The inclusion of working memory scores in calculation of the FSIQ appears to account for the difference in prediction between the FSIQ and the GAI. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) comprises a cluster of risk factors that includes central obesity, dyslipidemia, impaired glucose homeostasis and hypertension. Individuals with MetS have elevated risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease; thus placing significant burdens on social and healthcare systems. Lifestyle interventions (comprised of diet, exercise or a combination of both) are routinely recommended as the first line of treatment for MetS. Only a proportion of people respond, and it has been assumed that psychological and social aspects primarily account for these differences. However, the etiology of MetS is multifactorial and stems, in part, on a person's genetic make-up. Numerous single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are associated with the various components of MetS, and several of these SNPs have been shown to modify a person's response to lifestyle interventions. Consequently, genetic variants can influence the extent to which a person responds to changes in diet and/or exercise. The goal of this review is to highlight SNPs reported to influence the magnitude of change in body weight, dyslipidemia, glucose homeostasis and blood pressure during lifestyle interventions aimed at improving MetS components. Knowledge regarding these genetic variants and their ability to modulate a person's response will provide additional context for improving the effectiveness of personalized lifestyle interventions that aim to reduce the risks associated with MetS.  相似文献
