The increasing energy challenges faced, in particular, by isolated communities, such as insular communities, call for an integrated, flexible and easy-to-apply methodology aiming at providing a list of renewable energy sources) (RES) projects capable to reduce green house gas (GHG) emissions, satisfy future energy forecasts and reach the objectives of international/national energy directives and obligations, as, for example, the ones set by the Kyoto Protocol by 2010. The EU project EMERGENCE 2010 developed such a methodology that is implemented here in the case study of wind parks in the Dodecanese islands in Greece. The results obtained consist of a final list of financially viable RES wind projects, for which various barriers have been previously identified and assessed. The additional advantages of the proposed methodology is that besides providing as an end result a comprehensive list of RES projects adopted to specific criteria and regional priorities, it also allows space for involving – from early stages – the local community and stakeholders in the decision-making process (participatory planning); in this way, the EMERGENCE 2010 methodology may assist towards the RES promotion and public acceptance, the profitability of RES investments and the regional sustainable development.  相似文献

Host lipid metabolism reprogramming is essential for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and progression to severe liver disease. Direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) achieve a sustained virological response (SVR) in most patients, but virus eradication does not always protect against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Angiopoietin-like protein-3 (ANGPTL-3) and angiopoietin-like protein-4 (ANGPTL-4) regulate the clearance of plasma lipids by inhibiting cellular lipase activity and possess emerging roles in tumourigenesis. We used ELISA and RT-qPCR to investigate ANGPTL-3 and ANGPTL-4 expression in HCV patients with characterised fibrosis throughout the natural history of hepatitis C and in long-term HCV infection in vitro, before and after DAA treatment. ANGPTL-3 was decreased in patients with advanced fibrosis compared to other disease stages, while ANGPTL-4 was progressively increased from acute infection to cirrhosis and HCC, peaking at the advanced fibrosis stage. Only ANGPTL-3 mRNA was down-regulated during early infection in vitro, although both ANGPTLs were increased later. DAA treatment did not alter ANGPTL-3 levels in advanced fibrosis/cirrhosis and in HCV infection in vitro, in contrast to ANGPTL-4. The association between ANGPTLs and fibrosis in HCV infection was underlined by an inverse correlation between the levels of ANGPTLs and serum transforming growth factor- β (TGF-β). Collectively, we demonstrate the pivotal role of advanced fibrosis in defining the expression fate of ANGPTLs in HCV infection and after treatment and propose a role for ANGPTL-3 as a contributor to post-treatment deregulation of lipid metabolism that could predispose certain individuals to HCC development.  相似文献

To achieve natural scaffolds for tissue engineering applications we decellularized bovine pericardial (BP) tissues according to two different protocols: a novel treatment based on Triton(?) X-100 (12 h, 4 °C) (BP1) and a trypsin/EDTA treatment (37 °C, 48 h) (BP2). Results were compared with commercially available acellular xenogeneic biomaterials, Veritas(?) and Collamed(?). Biomechanical characteristics, high (E(h)) and low (E(l)) modulus of elasticity, of the fresh untreated tissue varied with the anatomical direction (apex to base (T) to transverse (L)) (mean ± SDEV): (41.63 ± 14.65-48.12 ± 10.19 MPa and 0.27 ± 0.05-0.30 ± 0.12 MPa respectively). BP1 had no mechanical effect (44.65 ± 19.73-52.67 ± 7.59 MPa and 0.37 ± 0.14-0.37 ± 0.11 MPa, respectively) but BP2 resulted in significant decrease in E(h) and E(l) (20.96 ± 8.17-36.82 ± 3.23 MPa and 0.20 ± 0.06-0.23 ± 0.06 MPa). Hysteresis ratio (h) varied (19-26 % of the loading energy) independently of anatomical direction. Glycosaminoglycans content was unaffected by BP1, while 22 % of chondroitin/dermatan sulphate and 60 % of hyaluronan were removed after BP2 treatment. Endothelial cell adhesion was achieved after 24 h and 3 days cell culture.  相似文献

Mediterranean dried fruits that are cultivated and produced in Greece; that is, Corinthian currants, figs, prunes, cherries, apricots and peaches were evaluated in terms of total polar phenols, individual simple phenolics, anthocyanins and antioxidant capacity in vitro. The potential release of dried fruit polar phenols among the different fractions of an in vitro digestion model was also determined. Total polar phenol, flavanol, flavone/flavonol content and antioxidant capacity was in the range 86–551 mg GAE/100g, 0.2–57 mg CE/100g, 9–71 mg RE/100g and 6–47 mg AAE/100g, respectively. A 12–82% release of total phenolics was observed post-mastication, which further increased post-gastric digestion. The same trend was also followed in the case of total flavanols and flavones/flavonols. Total polar phenols and flavones/flavonols were found to enter the simulated epithelial cell wall. Simple polar phenolics and anthocyanins were identified and quantified in all dried fruit extracts and in some of the digestion fractions.  相似文献

In response to attack by herbivorous insects, plants produce semiochemicals for intra- and interspecific communication. The perception of these semiochemicals by conspecifics of the herbivore defines their choice for oviposition and feeding. We aimed to investigate the role of herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) by Tuta absoluta larvae on the oviposition choice of conspecific females on tomato plants. We performed two- choice and non-choice bioassays with plants damaged by larvae feeding and intact control plants. We also collected headspace volatiles of those plants and tested the response of female antennae on those blends with Gas Chromatography- Electro-Antennographical Detection (GC-EAD). In total 55 compounds were collected from the headspace of T. absoluta larvae-infested plants. Our results show that female moths preferred to oviposit on intact control plants instead of damaged ones. Herbivory induced the emission of hexanal, (Ζ)-3-hexen-1-ol, (E)-β-ocimene, linalool, (Z)-3-hexenyl butanoate, methyl salicylate, indole, nerolidol, guaidiene-6,9, β-pinene, β-myrcene, α-terpinene, hexenyl hexanoate, β-elemene, β-caryophyllene and (Ε-Ε)- 4,8,12-trimethyl-1,3,7,11-tridecatetraene (TMTT), one unidentified sesquiterpene and three unknown compounds. In Electroantennographic (EAG) assays, the antennae of T. absoluta females responded to hexanal, (Ζ)-3-hexen-1-ol, methyl salicylate and indole. The antennae of T. absoluta females exhibited a dose-response in EAG studies with authentic samples. Strong EAG responses were obtained for compounds induced on damaged tomato plants, as well as in nonanal, a compound emitted by both infested and control plants. Mining patterns from multi-relational data is a problem attracting increasing interest within the data mining community. Traditional data mining approaches are typically developed for single-table databases, and are not directly applicable to multi-relational data. Nevertheless, multi-relational data is a more truthful and therefore often also a more powerful representation of reality. Mining patterns of a suitably expressive syntax directly from this representation, is thus a research problem of great importance. In this paper we introduce a novel approach to mining patterns in multi-relational data. We propose a new syntax for multi-relational patterns as complete connected subsets of database entities. We show how this pattern syntax is generally applicable to multi-relational data, while it reduces to well-known tiles “ Geerts et al. (Proceedings of Discovery Science, pp 278–289, 2004)” when the data is a simple binary or attribute-value table. We propose RMiner, a simple yet practically efficient divide and conquer algorithm to mine such patterns which is an instantiation of an algorithmic framework for efficiently enumerating all fixed points of a suitable closure operator “Boley et al. (Theor Comput Sci 411(3):691–700, 2010)”. We show how the interestingness of patterns of the proposed syntax can conveniently be quantified using a general framework for quantifying subjective interestingness of patterns “De Bie (Data Min Knowl Discov 23(3):407–446, 2011b)”. Finally, we illustrate the usefulness and the general applicability of our approach by discussing results on real-world and synthetic databases.  相似文献

The growth of silica nanoparticles by agglomeration and viscous flow sintering is studied from free molecular to transition regime by off-lattice event-driven (ED) simulations. Coagulation by simultaneous agglomeration and sintering takes place at high temperature environments, where sintering and collision rates are comparable. The effect of temperature on aggregate mobility and gyration radii, particle morphology, and collisional enhancement is elucidated. The ratio between the characteristic sintering time and characteristic collision time controls the particle size and structure, quantified by the mass fractal dimension. The aggregate morphology depends solely on the ratio of characteristic times and is insensitive to the process temperature. When sintering is negligible, the overall collision frequency is 90% larger than that predicted by the classic Fuchs collision kernel for monodisperse agglomerates, in agreement with experiments. The ED-obtained quasi-self-preserving size distributions are consistent with mobility size distributions measured in hot-wall reactors and flame sprays.  相似文献
