The overall legal significance of multiple drafts of professional communications is discussed. In particular, some of the legal principles that govern the status of written documents, such as the applicable rules of court are reviewed, and the types of litigation in which previous drafts can figure prominently are examined. The possibility of multiple draft liability in light of the current emphasis on writing as a process, with writers encouraged to turn off the editorial sides of their brains during the early stages of composing, is considered  相似文献

This research makes an investigation into the etching mechanism of atmospheric plasma conditions on the surface of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films. Two types of untreated PET films (S/200 and S/500) were exposed to plasma for 0 to 5.0 min in 30‐s increments. The first set of each film type was treated in helium plasma, while the second was treated in oxygenated‐helium plasma. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) was used to characterize pre‐ and post‐exposure films. Weight changes and the degree of solubility were also determined. Based on peak area results, the percent crystallinity of PET S/200 increased by an average of 4.57% (helium treated) and 13.56% (oxygenated‐helium treated), while the S/500 showed only a small increase. There was no significant change in the melting or crystallization temperatures of either film type, indicating a decrease in amorphous content versus an increase in crystalline material. Weight loss analysis supports this theory. Solubility testing revealed a continual decrease in swelling as exposure time was increased. A model was developed to predict the change in the degree of solubility for polyphase surfaces considering the etching rate per phase. A multicomponent mobile phase utilizing ion-exchange, ion-exclusion, and ion-pairing principles for the rapid isocratic separation of anions in low explosives residue by ion chromatography (IC) has been developed. The notable feature of this system is that an ion-pairing reagent and an ion-exclusion reagent are combined in the same mobile phase. Contrary to expectation, these reagents act independently of each other in solution. The stock mobile-phase composition consisted of boric acid, D-gluconic acid, lithium hydroxide, and glycerol. Tetrapropylammonium hydroxide, an ion-interaction reagent was used to achieve pH 8.5. Acetonitrile (ACN) was added to enhance resolution and octanesulfonic acid, an ion-exclusion reagent, was added to adjust the retention time of perchlorate. Separation of a mixture of anions common to low explosives residue was achieved in less than 16 min using a Waters IC-Pak Anion HR column. Optimization studies were performed by changing the concentration of the ACN and by altering the pH or the type of ion-interaction or -exclusion agents. Simulated case studies were performed using postblast residues from pipe bombs. The results show this method to be a valid and reproducible procedure for forensic casework analysis. The practical significance of this system is that a reduction in the analysis time and an improvement in efficiency of late-eluting peaks can be achieved without resorting to gradient elution techniques. For the analysis of anions detected in explosives residue, the Waters IC-Pak Anion HR column has proven to be a suitable replacement for the Vydac 300IC405 column, which has been discontinued by the manufacturer.  相似文献

Electrospun nylon 6 fiber mats were deposited on woven 50/50 nylon/cotton fabric with the motive of making them into protective material against submicron‐level aerosol chemical and biological threats. Polymer solution concentration, electrospinning voltage, and deposition areal densities were varied to establish the relationships of processing‐structure‐filtration efficiency of electrospun fiber mats. A high barrier efficiency of greater than 99.5% was achieved on electrospun fiber mats without sacrificing air permeability and pressure drop. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Porous Nylon 6 nanofibers were prepared using silica nanoparticles as the template. Firstly, Nylon 6/silica composite nanofibers were prepared as precursors by electrospinning Nylon 6 solutions containing different contents of silica nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to examine the surface morphology and the inner structure of composite nanofibers; where it was found that silica nanoparticles were distributed both inside and on the surface of nanofibers. Analytical techniques [Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction) were used to study the structure and properties of these composite nanofibers. The glass transition, melting, and crystallization processes of the fibers were affected by the addition of silica nanoparticles. Secondly, porous Nylon 6 nanofibers were obtained by removing silica nanoparticles via hydrofluoric acid treatment. The removal of silica nanoparticles was confirmed using FTIR and TGA tests. SEM and TEM observations revealed the formation of the porous structure in these nanofibers. After the formation of the porous structure, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller specific surface areas of nanofibers were increased as compared to solid Nylon 6 and composite nanofibers. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. PURPOSE: To determine medical students' experiences in working with diabetic patients, their cognitive competence and their confidence in meeting diabetic patients' educational needs, and changes in their expertise with advancing education. METHOD: The study was conducted in March 1994 at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, where students work with ambulatory patients in a longitudinal primary care experience from their second year through graduation. A combined questionnaire and objective quiz was developed and distributed to 138 second-, third-, and fourth-year students. The students were asked whether they had had experience in seeing a newly diagnosed diabetic patient, in what setting, and whether they felt confident in educating such patients on various common topics. They were also asked about their interests in and preferences for learning about diabetic patients' education. A 50-item objective quiz on the management of diabetes followed the questionnaire. Data were analyzed with several statistical methods. RESULTS: In all, 65 of the students (47%) responded; the majority were third- or fourth-year students. The percentages of students who felt confident ranged from 83% who felt confident about counseling about exercise to only 16% who felt confident about pre-conception counseling. All of the students but one felt that diabetic patients' education was an important topic, and all but two were interested in it. The students' quiz scores showed no significant difference by year of training; for all the students the average score was 39.6% correct, with no increase in score for increased training. Also, the students who were more confident about their abilities to provide patient education on a certain topic were no more likely to have accurate information about that topic than were those who were not confident. CONCLUSION: Although they were clearly interested in diabetic patients' education, the students did not feel confident in providing it, nor did they have the cognitive competence to do so. Medical schools have a responsibility to students and to their patients to formally address the issues of patient education.  相似文献

In this paper, ideas are presented for the expression of natural language grammars in clausal logic, following the work of Colmerauer, Kowalski, Dahl, Warren, and F. Pereira. A uniform format for syntactic structures is proposed, in which every syntactic item consists of a central predication, a cluster of modifiers, a list of features, and a determiner. The modifiers of a syntactic item are again syntactic items (of the same format), and a modifier's determiner shows its function in the semantic structure. Rules for semantic interpretation are given which include the determination of scoping of modifiers (with quantifier scoping as a special case). In the rules for syntax, the notions of slots and slot-filling play an important role, based on previous work by the author. The ideas have been tested in an English data base query system, implemented in Prolog.  相似文献

The article discusses three issues. First, observations of families evaluated while the participants were adolescents predicted their violent criminality measured 30 years later; this finding supports the conclusion that family interaction and socialization practices contribute to the causes of violence. Second, confounding data suggest that researchers should develop a taxonomy of violence before deciding whether violence should be studied apart from its embeddedness in other forms of deviance. Third, unhealthful experiences leave their residues, and it is a mistake to assume that knowledge about the effectiveness of restorative interventions follows from knowledge about causes.
