Thermoplastic sizing of various carbon fibres has been evaluated as a means of controlling the microcracking resistance, transflexural strength (TFS), and thermo-oxidative stability (TOS) of PMR-15 matrix composites. Four different fibre/thermoplastic size combinations were selected for this study, based on their higher TOS than appropriate controls. Data are presented for the transverse microcrack (TVM) density/inch, and the subsequent delamination of [0,90]4s laminates induced by thermal cycling (-196 to 350°C for 20 cycles). Results for composite TFS, conditioned TFS (after heating in air at 350°C), and TOS (350°C and 316°C) are also reported. One fibre/thermoplastic size combination gave both good microcracking resistance, and significantly improved TOS, in composite when compared with current commercially-available material.  相似文献

The activity of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), an enzyme associated with cellular growth and protein synthesis, was examined in breast muscle, liver, and intestinal tissues of turkeys during a short-term period of feed withdrawal (FW) and following refeeding. Turkeys from a randombred control line were reared under standard management practices to 3 wk of age in battery brooders. Feed was then withdrawn from FW birds for a 48-h period, after which feed was consumed ad libitum. Control birds consumed feed ad libitum throughout the test period. Tissues were collected from 12 birds per treatment following 24 and 48 h of FW and at 6, 12, 24, and 48 h following refeeding for later determination of tissue ODC activity. Activity of ODC was greater in tissue from the small intestine than in liver tissue and both had greater activity than that exhibited by breast muscle. Short-term FW and refeeding produced differential responses in ODC activity of the three tissues examined. Feed withdrawal resulted in a reduction of ODC activity in intestinal tissue, whereas activity was unaffected for liver or breast muscle tissues. Compensatory increases in ODC activity were observed in liver and intestinal tissues; however, the increase was both more rapid and transitory in small intestine than in liver tissue. The ODC activity in breast muscle was largely unaffected by short-term FW and refeeding. Patterns of ODC activity in liver during FW and refeeding closely resembled patterns observed for absolute and relative liver weight. Thus, the results of the present experiment demonstrate that short-term FW and refeeding influence underlying growth mechanisms of supply organs, such as hepatic and intestinal tissue, in addition to affecting overall growth and muscle development.  相似文献

We report a rare case of portal-hepatic venous shunt through an enormous portal aneurysm complicated by pulmonary hypertension. A 66-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for hepatic encephalopathy. Chest roentgenography revealed pulmonary hypertension. Computed tomography and ultrasound examination demonstrated a shunt between the portal and hepatic veins through an enormous portal aneurysm. The diagnoses of portal-hepatic venous shunt and pulmonary hypertension were confirmed by hepatic venous catheterization and cardiac catheterization. Pulmonary hypertension might result from the effects of vasoconstrictive agents, which should be metabolized by the liver in normal subjects, passing through the intrahepatic shunt into the lung.  相似文献

We investigate empirically the performance under damage conditions of single- and multilayer perceptrons (MLP's), with various numbers of hidden units, in a representative pattern-recognition task. While some degree of graceful degradation was observed, the single-layer perceptron was considerably less fault tolerant than any of the multilayer perceptrons, including one with fewer adjustable weights. Our initial hypothesis that fault tolerance would be significantly improved for multilayer nets with larger numbers of hidden units proved incorrect. Indeed, there appeared to be a liability to having excess hidden units. A simple technique (called augmentation) is described, which was successful in translating excess hidden units into improved fault tolerance. Finally, our results were supported by applying singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis to the MLP's internal representations.  相似文献

The Kinematic Stabilizer is a posterior-cruciate-substituting design of total knee replacement. We have reviewed 109 primary total knee replacements in 95 patients at a mean follow-up time of 12.7 years (10 to 14). We used survival analysis with failure defined as revision of the implant. This gave a cumulative survival rate of 95% (95% CI +/- 5%) at ten years and (87% +/- 10%) at 13 years. These results from an independent centre confirm the value of an established design of cemented total knee replacement and question the wisdom of the introduction of modifications and new designs without properly controlled trials.  相似文献

It is thought that galanin, a 29 amino acid neuropeptide, is involved in various neuronal functions, including the regulation of food intake and hormone release. Consistent with this idea, galanin receptors have been demonstrated throughout the brain, with high levels being observed in the hypothalamus. However, little is known about the mechanisms by which galanin elicits its actions in the brain. Therefore, we studied the effects of galanin and its analogs on synaptic transmission using an in vitro slice preparation of rat hypothalamus. In arcuate nucleus neurons, application of galanin resulted in an inhibition of evoked glutamatergic EPSCs and a decrease in paired-pulse depression, indicating a presynaptic action. The fragments galanin 1-16 and 1-15 produced a robust depression of synaptic transmission, whereas the fragment 3-29 produced a lesser degree of depression. The chimeric peptides C7, M15, M32, and M40, which have been reported to antagonize some actions of galanin, all produced varying degrees of depression of evoked EPSCs. In a minority of cases, C7, M15, and M40 antagonized the actions of galanin. Analysis of mEPSCs in the presence of TTX and Cd2+, or after application of alpha-latrotoxin, indicated a site of action for galanin downstream of Ca2+ entry. Thus, our data suggest that galanin acts via several subtypes of presynaptic receptors to depress synaptic transmission in the rat arcuate nucleus.  相似文献

Phylogenetic analyses were carried out on a total of 118 Listeria monocytogenes isolates from foods or food processing environments, and 7 isolates from listeriosis patients in Japan to evaluate the genetic variation in the pathogen in this country. Isolates of serotypes 1/2a, 1/2b and 4b were mainly examined to assess the risk of exposure of humans to L. monocytogenes from foods in Japan. The nucleotide sequences of the part of the iap gene that contains the region encoding the threonine-asparagine repeat units were determined in order to construct phylogenetic trees of the isolates investigated. A phylogram showed high genetic diversity among lineage 2 isolates, while the lineage 1 isolates showed clonal characteristics. The results of the genetic analyses suggested the presence of rare putative lineage 3 isolates and epidemic clone I (ECI) isolates in foods in Japan. The results showed that ECI was also isolated from listeriosis patients. The genetic variation in L. monocytogenes in Japan reported here suggests the necessity of monitoring the pathogen in foods and environments in addition to surveillance of listeriosis patients.  相似文献

Experimental demonstration of small angle (0.8 degrees-5 degrees ) direct UV-written X couplers in silica-on-silicon is presented. Maximum and minimum coupling ratios of 95%(+/-0.8%) and 1.9% (+/-1%), respectively, were recorded. The structures also display very low polarization and wavelength dependence. A typical excess loss of 1.0 dB(+/-0.5 dB) was recorded. Device modeling using the beam propagation method and an analytical model showed good agreement with experimental results over a broad crossing angle and wavelength range.  相似文献
