The clearing of tropical rain forest in the Amazon basin has created large areas of cattle pasture that are now declining in productivity. Practices adopted by ranchers to restore productivity to degraded pastures have the potential to alter soil N availability and gaseous N losses from soils. We examined how soil inorganic N pools, net N mineralization and net nitrification rates, nitrification potential and NO and N2O emissions from soils of a degraded pasture responded to the following restoration treatments: (1) soil tillage followed by replanting of grass and fertilization, (2) no-till application of non-selective herbicide, planting of rice, harvest followed by no-till replanting of grass and fertilization, and (3) the same no-till sequence with soybeans instead of rice. Tillage increased soil NH4+ and NO3? pools but NH4+ and NO3? pools remained relatively constant in the control and no-till treatments. Cumulative rates of net N mineralization and net nitrification during the first 6 months after treatment varied widely but were hightest in the tilled treatment. Emissions of NO and N2O fluxes increased with tillage and with N fertilization. There were no clear relationships among rates of N fertilizer application, net N mineralization, net nitrification, NO, N2O and total N oxide emissions. Our results indicate that pasture restoration sequences involving tilling and fertilizing will increase emissions of N oxides, but the magnitude of the increase is likely to differ based on timing of fertilizer application relative to the presence of plants and the magnitude of plant N demand. Emissions of N oxides appear to be decreased by the use of restoration sequences that minimize reductions in pasture grass cover.  相似文献

We have investigated the effects of different annealing treatments on silicon dioxide films produced from the reaction of dichlorosilane and nitrous oxide at 700° C. The electrical quality of these LPCVD films was evaluated by measuring oxide charge and interface trap densities on metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) capacitors. These densities were measured before and after avalanche injection of electron currents into the oxide films. The results of these studies were as follows. (1) The LPCVD oxide films required a post deposition anneal at 1000° C to produce as-grown charge densities similar to those of a standarddry thermal oxide grown and annealed at 1000° C. (2) Post-injection charge densities of LPCVD films given a post deposition anneal at 1000°C were an order of magnitude greater than those of the standard dry thermal oxide. (3) Different annealing treatments produced a series of dominant electron trapping centers in the oxide bulk17 with capture cross sections ranging from 10−14 cm2 to 10−17 cm2. (4) The electron traps in the LPCVD oxides films were similar to those previously observed in standardwet thermal oxides grown and annealed above 1000° C.  相似文献

We have studied the effects of different deposition and annealing ambients on silicon dioxide films produced via the pyrolytic decomposition of tetraethoxysilane at 700° C. The oxide and interface charge characteristics of capacitors incorporating these oxides were measured. The results of these studies were as follows. (1) Films deposited in nitrogen exhibited very poor electrical properties. This was due to the poor quality of both the LPCVD oxide bulk (manifest as a hysteretic instability exceeding one Volt in 20 nm films) and the LPCVD oxide-silicon interface (interface trap charge and fixed charge exceeding 1012 cm−2). These characteristics were not improved by post-deposition annealing in nitrogen at 700° C. (2) As much as an order-of-magnitude reduction in interface traps and/or bias-induced drifts was obtained by exposure of the silicon substrate to 700°C oxygen ambients before, during, or after pyrolysis. The maximum improvement also required both post-deposition and post-metallization annealing treatments in nitrogen.  相似文献

The deformation and orientation behavior of three-dimensional (3D) viscous droplets with and without surfactants is studied in simple shear flow using simulations and experiments. Two added amounts of surfactants are considered, along with a range of viscosity ratios and capillary numbers. The numerical method couples the boundary integral method for interfacial velocity, a second-order Runge-Kutta method for interface evolution, and a finite element method for surfactant concentration. The algorithm assumes a bulk-insoluble, nonionic surfactant, and uses a linear equation of state to model the relationship between the interfacial tension and the surfactant concentration on the drop surface. The algorithm was validated by comparison with other numerical results and good agreement was found. The experiments are performed in a parallel-band apparatus with full optical analysis of the droplet. The simulated and measured 3D steady-state shape of the ellipsoidal drops and their orientation are in reasonably good agreement. It was found that the surfactants have a greater effect on drop geometry for smaller viscosity ratios and that the deformation increases as the transport of surfactant becomes more convection dominated. It was also found that surfactants cause the drops to align more in the flow direction and that, for both clean and surfactant-covered drops, this alignment increases with viscosity ratio. Surface motion of mountain glaciers derived from satellite optical imagery   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
A complete and detailed map of the ice-velocity field on mountain glaciers is obtained by cross-correlating SPOT5 optical images. This approach offers an alternative to SAR interferometry, because no present or planned RADAR satellite mission provides data with a temporal separation short enough to derive the displacements of glaciers. The methodology presented in this study does not require ground control points (GCPs). The key step is a precise relative orientation of the two images obtained by adjusting the stereo model of one “slave”' image assuming that the other “master” image is well georeferenced. It is performed with numerous precisely-located homologous points extracted automatically. The strong ablation occurring during summer time on the glaciers requires a correction to obtain unbiased displacements. The accuracy of our measurement is assessed based on a comparison with nearly simultaneous differential GPS surveys performed on two glaciers of the Mont Blanc area (Alps). If the images have similar incidence angles and correlate well, the accuracy is on the order of 0.5 m, or 1/5 of the pixel size. Similar results are also obtained without GCPs. An acceleration event, observed in early August for the Mer de Glace glacier, is interpreted in term of an increase in basal sliding. Our methodology, applied to SPOT5 images, can potentially be used to derive the displacements of the Earth's surface caused by landslides, earthquakes, and volcanoes.  相似文献

Tropical soils are important sources of nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO) emissions from the Earths terrestrial ecosystems. Clearing of tropical rainforest for pasture has the potential to alter N2O and NO emissions from soils by altering moisture, nitrogen supply or other factors that control N oxide production. In this review we report annual rates of N2O and NO emissions from forest and pastures of different ages in the western Brazilian Amazon state of Rondônia and examine how forest clearing alters the major controls of N oxide production. Forests had annual N2O emissions of 1.7 to 4.3 kg N ha-1 y-1 and annual NO emissions of 1.4 kg N ha-1 y-1. Young pastures of 1–3 years old had higher N2O emissions than the original forest (3.1–5.1 kg N ha-1 y-1) but older pastures of 6 years or more had lower emissions (0.1 to 0.4 kg N ha-1 y-1). Both soil moisture and indices of soil N cycling were relatively poor predictors of N2O, NO and combined N2O + NO emissions. In forest, high N2O emissions occurred at soil moistures above 30 water-filled pore space, while NO emissions occurred at all measured soil moistures (18–43). In pastures, low N availability led to low N2O and NO emissions across the entire range of soil moistures. Based on these patterns and results of field fertilization experiments, we concluded that: (1) nitrification was the source of NO from forest soils, (2) denitrification was not a major source of N2O production from forest soils or was not limited by NO- supply, (3) denitrification was a major source of N2O production from pasture soils but only when NO3- was available, and (4) nitrification was not a major source of 3 NO production in pasture soils. Pulse wettings after prolonged dry periods increased N2O and NO3- emissions for only short periods and not enough to appreciably affect annual emission rates. We project that Basin-wide, the effect of clearing for pasture in the future will be a small reduction in total N2O emissions if the extensive pastures of the Amazon continue to be managed in a way similar to current practices. In the future, both N2Oand NO fluxes could increase if uses of pastures change to include greater use of N fertilizers or N-fixing crops. Predicting the consequences of these changes for N oxide production will require an understanding of how the processes of nitrification and denitrification interact with soil type and regional moisture regimes to control N2O and NO production from these new anthropogenic N sources.  相似文献

Defect engineering is one of the cornerstones of the modern electronics industry. Almost all electronic devices include materials that have been doped by ion bombardment. For materials where crystallinity is essential, such as ferroelectrics, defect type and concentration can vastly influence properties and are often used to optimize device performance. This study shows a method to effectively control the density and position on the nanoscale of defect sites in thin films of Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 via focused ion beam microscopy. This allows for exceptional clarity of observation of the role of defects in nucleation, polarization switching, and domain wall interaction through investigation with piezoresponse force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, adding insight to accepted but seldom‐demonstrated facts on defect‐induced effects. This nanoscale defect engineering can be used as a tool to control material properties, and furthermore, a route is demonstrated toward a practical application.  相似文献
