The present study deals with the mathematical modeling of crosslinking kinetics of polymer–phenol conjugates mediated by the Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP)-hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) initiation system. More specifically, a dynamic Monte Carlo (MC) kinetic model is developed to quantify the effects of crosslinking conditions (i.e., polymer concentration, degree of phenol substitution and HRP and H2O2 concentrations) on the gelation onset time; evolution of molecular weight distribution and number and weight average molecular weights of the crosslinkable polymer chains and gel fraction. It is shown that the MC kinetic model can faithfully describe the crosslinking kinetics of a finite sample of crosslinkable polymer chains with time, providing detailed molecular information for the crosslinkable system before and after the gelation point. The MC model is validated using experimental measurements on the crosslinking of a tyramine modified Hyaluronic Acid (HA-Tyr) polymer solution reported in the literature. Based on the rubber elasticity theory and the MC results, the dynamic evolution of hydrogel viscoelastic and molecular properties (i.e., number average molecular weight between crosslinks, Mc, and hydrogel mesh size, ξ) are calculated.  相似文献

A sensor system capable of medical, safety and security monitoring in avionic and other environments (e.g. homes) is examined. For application inside an aircraft cabin, the system relies on an optical cellular network that connects each seat to a server and uses a set of database applications to process data related to passengers’ health, safety and security status. Health monitoring typically encompasses electrocardiogram, pulse oximetry and blood pressure, body temperature and respiration rate while safety and security monitoring is related to the standard flight attendance duties, such as cabin preparation for take-off, landing, flight in regions of turbulence, etc. In contrast to previous related works, this article focuses on the system’s modules (medical and safety sensors and associated hardware), the database applications used for the overall control of the monitoring function and the potential use of the system for security applications. Further tests involving medical, safety and security sensing performed in an real A340 mock-up set-up are also described and reference is made to the possible use of the sensing system in alternative environments and applications, such as health monitoring within other means of transport (e.g. trains or small passenger sea vessels) as well as for remotely located home users, over a wired Ethernet network or the Internet.  相似文献

Assessment of sustainability will become more relevant for the food industry in the years to come. Analysis based on exergy, including the use of exergetic indicators and Grassmann diagrams, is a useful tool for the quantitative and qualitative assessment of the efficiency of industrial food chains. In this paper, we review the methodology of exergy analysis and the exergetic indicators that are most appropriate for use in the food industry. The challenges of applying exergy analysis in industrial food chains and the specific features of food processes are also discussed.  相似文献

Context: Prediction of the in vivo absorption of poorly soluble drugs may require simultaneous dissolution/permeation experiments. In vivo predictive media have been modified for permeation experiments with Caco-2 cells, but not for excised rat intestinal segments.

Objective: The present study aimed at improving the setup of dissolution/permeation experiments with excised rat intestinal segments by assessing suitable donor and receiver media.

Methods: The regional compatibility of rat intestine in Ussing chambers with modified Fasted and Fed State Simulated Intestinal Fluids (Fa/FeSSIFmod) as donor media was evaluated via several parameters that reflect the viability of the excised intestinal segments. Receiver media that establish sink conditions were investigated for their foaming potential and toxicity. Dissolution/permeation experiments with the optimized conditions were then tested for two particle sizes of the BCS class II drug aprepitant.

Results: Fa/FeSSIFmod were toxic for excised rat ileal sheets but not duodenal sheets, the compatibility with jejunal segments depended on the bile salt concentration. A non-foaming receiver medium containing bovine serum albumin (BSA) and Antifoam B was nontoxic. With these conditions, the permeation of nanosized aprepitant was higher than of the unmilled drug formulations.

Discussion: The compatibility of Fa/FeSSIFmod depends on the excised intestinal region. The chosen conditions enable dissolution/permeation experiments with excised rat duodenal segments. The experiments correctly predicted the superior permeation of nanosized over unmilled aprepitant that is observed in vivo.

Conclusion: The optimized setup uses FaSSIFmod as donor medium, excised rat duodenal sheets as permeation membrane and a receiver medium containing BSA and Antifoam B.  相似文献

In this study, the microbial composition of kunu-zaki and ogi, two popular foods in Nigeria produced after natural, uncontrolled fermentation of cereals, was assessed by culture-independent molecular profiling methods. In particular, PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and construction of 16S rRNA gene clone libraries revealed the presence of diverse bacterial communities. DNA sequencing of the highly variable V3 region of the 16S rRNA genes obtained from PCR-DGGE fingerprints identified species related to Weissella confusa, Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus amylolyticus, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, Bacillus spp. and Lactococcus lactis spp lactis from food samples obtained from northern and southern geographical locations. A more comprehensive analysis of 272 full-length 16S rRNA gene inserts revealed that 70% of them were assigned to the Lactobacillaceae family and 19% to the Streptococcaceae family. Interestingly, sequences associated with a particular food type were also identified. For example, L. plantarum, L. pantheris and L. vaccinostercus were found in ogi but not in kunu-zaki while W. confusa, Streptococcus lutetiensis and Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. macedonicus were found in kunu-zaki but not in ogi. Phylotypes corresponding to potentially pathogenic bacteria, such as Clostridium perfringens and Bacillus cereus were also detected highlighting the need for controlled fermentation processes.  相似文献

The effect of rough-wall/fluid interaction on flow in nanochannels is investigated by NEMD. Hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces are studied for walls with nearly atomic-size rectangular protrusions and cavities. Our NEMD simulations reveal that the number of liquid atoms temporarily trapped in the cavities is affected by the strength of the potential energy inside the cavities. Regions of low potential energy are possible trapping locations. Fluid atom localization is also affected by the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of the surface. Potential energy is greater between two successive hydrophilic protrusions, compared to hydrophobic ones. Moreover, groove size and wall wettability are factors that control effective slip length. Surface roughness and wall wettability have to be taken into account in the design of nanofluidic devices.  相似文献

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2A (CMT2A) is the most common hereditary axonal neuropathy caused by mutations in MFN2 encoding Mitofusin-2, a multifunctional protein located in the outer mitochondrial membrane. In order to study the effects of a novel MFN2K357T mutation associated with early onset, autosomal dominant severe CMT2A, we generated a knock-in mouse model. While Mfn2K357T/K357T mouse pups were postnatally lethal, Mfn2+/K357T heterozygous mice were asymptomatic and had no histopathological changes in their sciatic nerves up to 10 months of age. However, immunofluorescence analysis of Mfn2+/K357T mice revealed aberrant mitochondrial clustering in the sciatic nerves from 6 months of age, in optic nerves from 8 months, and in lumbar spinal cord white matter at 10 months, along with microglia activation. Ultrastructural analyses confirmed dysmorphic mitochondrial aggregates in sciatic and optic nerves. After exposure of 6-month-old mice to lipopolysaccharide, Mfn2+/K357T mice displayed a higher immune response, a more severe motor impairment, and increased CNS inflammation, microglia activation, and macrophage infiltrates. Overall, ubiquitous Mfn2K357T expression renders the CNS and peripheral nerves of Mfn2+/K357T mice more susceptible to mitochondrial clustering, and augments their response to inflammation, modeling some cellular mechanisms that may be relevant for the development of neuropathy in patients with CMT2A.  相似文献

Database systems play an important role in nearly every modern organization, yet relatively little research effort has focused on how to test them. This paper discusses issues arising in testing database systems, presents an approach to testing database applications, and describes AGENDA, a set of tools to facilitate the use of this approach. In testing such applications, the state of the database before and after the user's operation plays an important role, along with the user's input and the system output. A framework for testing database applications is introduced. A complete tool set, based on this framework, has been prototyped. The components of this system are a parsing tool that gathers relevant information from the database schema and application, a tool that populates the database with meaningful data that satisfy database constraints, a tool that generates test cases for the application, a tool that checks the resulting database state after operations are performed by a database application, and a tool that assists the tester in checking the database application's output. The design and implementation of each component of the system are discussed. The prototype described here is limited to applications consisting of a single SQL query. The Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation with Station data (CHIRPS) is a high-resolution climatic database of precipitation embracing monthly precipitation climatology, quasi-global geostationary thermal infrared satellite observations from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B42 product, atmospheric model rainfall fields from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration – Climate Forecast System (NOAA CFS), and precipitation observations from various sources. The key difference with all other existing precipitation databases is the high-resolution of the available data, since the inherent 0.05° resolution is a rather unique threshold. Monthly data for the period from January 1999 to December 2012 were processed in the present research. The main aim of this article is to propose a novel downscaling method in order to attain high resolution (1 km × 1 km) precipitation datasets, by correlating the CHIRPS dataset with altitude information and the normalized difference vegetation index from satellite images at 1 km × 1 km, utilizing artificial neural network models. The final result was validated with precipitation measurements from the rain gauge network of the Cyprus Department of Meteorology.  相似文献
