Night and Day: Are Siblings as Different in Temperament as Parents Say They Are?

Twin studies suggest that parent ratings of temperament exaggerate differences between twins. The present study examined whether such contrast effects also operate for nontwin siblings. The activity level (AL) and shyness of 95 nontwin sibling pairs (ages 3 to 8 years) were assessed via parent ratings and objective measures (actigraph and observer ratings). Siblings showed no resemblance in either parent-rated AL or shyness; however, sibling resemblance for actigraph AL and observer-rated shyness was substantial. Thus, parents do contrast their nontwin siblings when rating these 2 temperament dimensions. Moreover, the importance of sibling differences in temperament to the sibling relationship and differential maternal treatment varied across the different measures of AL and shyness, suggesting that parent perceptions may play a role in these associations. Recordings of Bioelectric Potentials with Glass Microelectrodes: Limitations of Unity-Gain Follower with Buffer

It is possible to design amplifiers with virtually no input capacitance. As shown in the sequel, this feature, however, is not by itself sufficient to insure faithful recording of fast transmembrane potentials with glass microelectrodes.     

Prediction of Temperature Profiles in Tumors and Surrounding Normal Tissues During Magnetic Induction Heating

The development and preliminary verification of a simple two-compartment model describing the thermal response of adjacent normal and cancerous tissues subjected to magnetic induction heating is presented. Analytical expressions were found for estimating the spatial temperature distributions in the system composed of a spherical tumor mass imbedded in a cylindrical normal tissue as a function of the field intensity and the tissue's physical, geometrical, and physiological characteristics. The conditions leading to preferential heating of the tumor are described.     

Assigment of the CH2F2laser lines associated with the 9R(34) CO2pumping transition

Two new submillimeter laser transitions are reported for CH2F2optically pumped by the 9R(34) CO2line. The new transitions allow us to assign molecular transitions to the complete group of laser lines observed with that pump transition.     

Transient analysis of lossy parabolic transmission lines withnonlinear loads

The exact analytical expressions of the time-domain step response matrix parameters for the lossy parabolic transmission line are developed, therefore extending the range of problems where Allen's method can be applied for the transient analysis of networks consisting of interconnections of linear distributed elements, lumped linear and/or nonlinear elements, and arbitrary sources. For completeness, similar expressions are derived for the lossless parabolic line. In order to demonstrate the versatility of the techniques presented in this paper, we study the transient response of a lossy parabolic line subjected to the following sets of boundary conditions: 1) a unit step input and a linear load, and 2) a trapezoidal pulse generator and a nonlinear load
