Immunogenic potential of glanders and melioidosis agents

Unlike the glanders agent, the superficial structures of the melioidosis agent were demonstrated to be responsible for marked was immunosuppressive activity. Some antigenic fractions suppressing the blast transformation of lymphocytes, reducing the count of T helpers and profoundly potentiating the infection in vivo were isolated from P. pseudomallei cells. The immunogenic and immunosuppressive activities of both agents' superficial structures were studied by high performance chromatography. Antigenic complexes that were able to protect immunized laboratory animals against fatal infections and to prevent bacterial carriage due to the activation of T cells and to the bacterial activity of macrophages were identified. A composition comprising several immunogens was found to provide an additive protective action against both causative agents. Therefore, the composition may be considered to be a prototype of a molecular antipseudomonadic vaccine.     

Mutual diffusion and phase equilibrium in copolymers of nonyl acrylate and acrylic acid–diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A systems

The influence of the composition of statistical copolymers of nonyl acrylate with acrylic acid on the rate of mass transfer and phase equilibrium in solutions with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A was studied. For these systems, the data on concentration dependencies of mutual diffusion coefficients and phase diagrams were obtained. The results were interpreted on the basis of the assumption about the effect of the effective concentration of nodes of the network of hydrogen bonds on the mutual diffusion and phase equilibrium. The dependencies of the mutual diffusion coefficients on the content of acrylic acid in the copolymers are described in terms of the free volume theory. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The morphological characteristics of a papillomavirus infection in the epithelial tissue of the cervix uteri in comparison with the data from the molecular biological identification of specific HPV DNA sequences]

Xeroderma pigmentosum group E (XP-E) fibroblasts (XP95TO) were transformed with pSV3neo. Selection in medium containing G418 yielded 14 clones with extended life span. Following crisis, one clone was recovered that behaved in culture as an immortal cell line and was named XPET6/1. Expression of the SV40 large T antigen gene (Tag) and increased level of p53 were demonstrated by western analyses. Fingerprinting with 14 polymorphic microsatellite genetic markers confirmed that XPET6/1 originated from the parental strain XP95TO. XPET6/1 retained the sensitivity to killing by UV observed with the parental strain. Cell-free extracts from the immortal or the parental XP-E cells were deficient in excision, compared to extracts from HeLa or extracts from Tag-transformed XP variant fibroblasts. Complementation of XP-E extracts with XP-A, XP-D or XP-G extracts restored nucleotide excision activity to normal levels. XPET6/1 could prove a useful cell line for cloning of the XPE gene by functional complementation.     

An experimental study of the effectiveness of an additive for fuel oil

An available multifunctional additive for low-grade fuel oil is proposed. Its effect on the service properties of fuel oil is experimentally studied, and results from this study are presented.     

Effects of additives on the working properties of furnace heavy fuel oils

A multifunctional additive is proposed for use with low-grade heavy fuel oil. There is a discussion of its effects on the working properties. The additive tends to increase the mechanical and economic and otherwise ecological parameters in heavy fuel oil use.     

Determination of the individual sensitivity of human stomach cancer cells to fluoropyrimidines by the cytomorphological criteria of heterotransplants in diffusion chambers

An optimal morphologic complex of parameters for evaluation of individual sensitivity of heterotransplants to two anti-cancer drugs--5-fluorouracil and ftorafur has been developed on the basis of clinical and experimental material and using 76 gastric malignant tumours, 1320 heterotransplants in diffusion chambers (DC) in vivo which were implanted to 660 animal recipients. A simplified preclinical evaluation method of the individual sensitivity of the human gastric tumour to fluoropyrimidines is recommended based on dynamic level of mitotic activity in DC in vivo heterotransplants.     

Current problems of oncogenetics

Data available in literature on clinical oncogenetics are reviewed. Pretumour and tumor processes with dominant, recessive and multifactorial inheritance are analyzed in particular. A possibility of application of cytogenetic indices to diagnose initial forms of tumour process and determine the level of anaplasia of developed malignant tumours is suggested. The role of Ukrainian oncologists in oncogenetic studies with the view of comprehending the nature of malignancy and expanding diagnostic possibilities in practical oncology is shown.     

Effect of coactivation with Dy<Superscript>3+</Superscript> and Yb<Superscript>3+</Superscript> ions on the efficiency of energy storage in Lu<Subscript>2</Subscript>SiO<Subscript>5</Subscript>:Ce<Superscript>3+</Superscript> crystals

Cerium-activated lutetium oxyorthosilicate Lu₂SiO₅:Ce³⁺ (LSO:Ce) and coactivated LSO:Ce,Dy and LSO:Ce,Yb crystals have been synthesized by the sol-gel technique. It is shown that the introduction of coactivator (Yb and Dy) ions influences the energy storage in LSO:Ce, thus making it possible to control the afterglow and thermoluminescence in these crystals. The observed effect is related to the electron properties of coactivator ions (donor against acceptor), which determine the recharge of electron traps in LSO crystals.
