A demonstrative study for the wind and solar hybrid power system

In March 1995, a small scale wind and solar hybrid power system was installed at Ashikaga Institute of Technology. Until now, the authors have acquired the data of the output of the hybrid power plant along with wind speed, wind direction, and the solar radiation, in order to demonstrate a complementary relationship between solar energy and wind energy.After nine months operation of the system, the authors confirmed that there exists a complementary relationship between solar energy and wind energy. We also found, however, that the power output by wind does not have much prospect compared to that by solar cell especially in summer season in Ashikaga area.     

Contents of barbaloin-related compounds in aloe drinks and their change during storage

The contents of barbaloin (BA), isoBA, aloin-dimers A, B, C, D and aloe-emodin (AE) in aloe drinks were investigated. BA and isoBA were detected in 30 of the 31 samples at the levels of 120-570 micrograms/mL and 120-580 micrograms/mL, respectively. Aloin-dimers A, B, C and D were detected in 8 of the 31 samples at the levels of 12-38 micrograms/mL, 13-39 micrograms/mL, 11-36 micrograms/mL and 16-69 micrograms/mL, respectively. AE was detected in all of the 31 samples at the levels of 0.03-1.3 micrograms/mL. When aloe drinks were stored for 4 weeks at 5 degrees C after opening the bottle, decrease of BA and isoBA, and increase of AE and aloin-dimers A, B, C and D were observed in most cases. However, in a few aloe drinks, all of BA, isoBA, aloin-dimers A, B, C, D and AE decreased. In these drinks, the existence of aloin-trimer was elucidated by LC/MS analyses. These data suggested that BA in aloe drinks is converted to the dimer and then to the trimer during storage.     

Simple determination of residual anticoccidial drugs (diclazuril and nicarbazin) in chicken tissues by HPLC

A simple and rapid determination of anticoccidial drug residues, diclazuril (DCZ) and nicarbazin (NCZ), in chicken tissues has been developed. DCZ and NCZ were extracted with acetonitrile from chicken liver, muscle, and fat. The extract was rinsed with n-hexane saturated with acetonitrile and then evaporated. The residue was dissolved in 1.4 mL of acetonitrile-methanol (1:1), then 1.0 mL of n-hexane saturated with acetonitrile-methanol (1:1) was added, and the mixture was partitioned by the addition of 0.6 mL of water. DCZ and NCZ in the aqueous layers were determined by HPLC on an Xterra RP-18 column with acetonitrile-0.5% ammonium acetate containing 0.01 mol/L tetra-n-butylammonium hydrogen sulfate (43:57) as the mobile phase. The mean recoveries (n = 5) of DCZ and NCZ spiked in chicken tissues at the maximum residue levels were 92.0-95.6% (CV 2.4-3.0%) and 87.3-89.4% (CV 1.7-2.8%), respectively. The detection limits of DCZ and NCZ were 0.01 and 0.004 microgram/g, respectively.     

Uniformity of deep levels in semi-insulating InP obtained by multiple-step wafer annealing

The uniformity of deep levels in semi-insulating InP wafers, which have been obtained by multiple-step wafer annealing under phosphorus vapor pressure, was studied using the thermally stimulated current (TSC) and photoluminescence (PL) methods. Only three traps related to Fe, T₀ (ionization energy E_i=0.19 eV), T₁ (0.25 eV), and T₂ (0.33 eV), probably forming complex defects, were observed in the wafer and they exhibited a relatively uniform distribution. PL spectra relating to phosphorus vacancies observed in some regions of the wafer are correlated with a small TSC signal having an ionization energy of 0.43 eV.     

A metalloproteinase inhibitor prevents lethal acute graft-versus-host disease in mice

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and Fas ligand (FasL) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), which is a major complication after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. We examined here the ameliorating effect of a metalloproteinase inhibitor (KB-R7785) that inhibits TNF-alpha and FasL release in a lethal acute GVHD model in mice. Administration of KB-R7785 into (BALB/c x C57BL/6) F1 that received C57BL/6 spleen cells markedly reduced the mortality and weight loss in association with minimal signs of GVHD pathology in the liver, intestine, and hematopoietic tissues. The ameliorating effect of KB-R7785 was superior to that of anti-TNF-alpha antibody. Our results suggest that KB-R7785 could be a potent therapeutic agent for GVHD.     

Specific inhibition of Na+,K(+)-ATPase activity by atractylon, a major component of byaku-jutsu, by interaction with enzyme in the E2 state

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is known to be associated with a complex neuroendocrine activation, especially concerning sympathetic and renin-angiotensin systems, cortisol, atrial natriuretic peptide and endothelin. Results of our study show that the vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), also, is early involved in the neuroendocrine activation occurring in AMI. Plasma concentration of VIP, significantly increased in AMI patients within 6 hours after the onset of chest pain, soon decreased and remained below than normal along the first week. At the 14th day of the AMI, plasma levels of VIP returned into the normal range. A significant increase of VIP plasma concentration is detectable in the first hours of AMI in survived as compared with died patients. The phenomenon seems to be a suitable process to provide an endogenous support to the ischemic heart and to counteract the negative effects of other neuroendocrine activated factors.     

Survey of histamine content in seafood on the market

Food poisoning involving histamine has occurred almost every year for 20 years in Tokyo, and is usually due to ingestion of fish with lean meat, such as sardine, mackerel, horse mackerel and so on. Therefore, we were investigated the levels of histamine and 4 non-volatile amines (tyramine, putrescine, cadaverine, spermidine) in 637 samples on the market. The water activity of samples in which histamine was detected at 5 mg/100 g and over was examined. Histamine, tyramine, putrescine, cadaverine and spermidine were detected in 66, 43, 26, 64 and 5 samples, and the detection ranges were 5-340, 5-51, 5-42, 5-180 and 5-8 mg/100 g, respectively. Most of the samples in which histamine was detected were semi-dried round and split sardine. Water activity of 24 samples of semi-dried round and split sardine in which histamine was detected was in the range of 0.68-0.96.     

Laparoscopy-assisted radical nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma in patients on long-term hemodialysis: report of 2 patients

We successfully performed a laparoscopy-assisted radical nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma in 2 patients on long-term hemodialysis. Both tumors were incidentally discovered on screening by abdominal CT scanning. There were no complications during the operation or in the postoperative period, and both patients resumed normal activities by the fifth postoperative day. A laparoscopic-assisted radical nephrectomy may be useful for the treatment of renal cell carcinoma in hemodialysis patients.     

Fluorescent imaging of endothelial glycocalyx layer with wheat germ agglutinin using intravital microscopy

Endothelial glycocalyx (GCX) is located on the apical surface of vascular endothelial cells and is composed of a negatively‐charged network of proteoglycans and glycoproteins. The GCX plays an important role in maintaining the integrity of vascular walls and preventing leakage of plasma. Therefore, degradation of the GCX is believed to lead to pathological leakage of plasma. Because the GCX is a very thin layer, its ultrastructural image has been demonstrated on electron microscope. To explore the function of the GCX, it should be visualized by a microscope in vivo. Thus, we developed in vivo visualization technique of the GCX under fluorescence microscopy using a mouse dorsal skinfold chamber (DSC) model. To label and visualize the GCX, we used fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)‐labeled lectin, which has a high specificity for sugar moieties. We examined the affinity of the different lectins to epivascular regions under an intravital fluorescent microscope. Among seven different lectins we examined, FITC labeled Triticum vulgaris (wheat germ) agglutinin (WGA) delineated the GCX most clearly. Binding of WGA to the GCX was inhibited by chitin hydrolysate, which contained WGA‐binding polysaccharide chains. Furthermore, the septic condition attenuated this structure, suggesting structural degradation of endothelial GCX layer. In conclusion, FITC‐labeled WGA lectin enabled visualization of endothelial GCX under in vivo fluorescence microscopy. Microsc. Res. Tech. 79:31–37, 2016. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
