Warpage of various semicrystalline polyethylenes (linear low density polyethylene [LLDPE]) has been investigated under typical rotational molding conditions, which means slow cooling from only one side. We have developed an experimental technique that is able to quickly rate different materials with respect to warpage under typical process conditions. We have also developed a numerical model simulating the experiments assuming a thermoelastic material including crystallization. As has been observed in practical rotational molding, it has been found in both experiments and simulations that materials with high crystallinity have in general higher warpage. The simulations also showed that the crystallization kinetics has implications on the warpage because the crystallinity gradient during solidification depends on the rate of crystallization. POLYM. Diagnosing cardiovascular system (CVS) diseases from clinically measured data is difficult, due to the complexity of the hemodynamic and autonomic nervous system (ANS) interactions. Physiological models could describe these interactions to enable simulation of a variety of diseases, and could be combined with parameter estimation algorithms to help clinicians diagnose CVS dysfunctions. This paper presents modifications to an existing CVS model to include a minimal physiological model of ANS activation. A minimal model is used so as to minimise the number of parameters required to specify ANS activation, enabling the effects of each parameter on hemodynamics to be easily understood. The combined CVS and ANS model is verified by simulating a variety of CVS diseases, and comparing simulation results with common physiological understanding of ANS function and the characteristic hemodynamics seen in these diseases. The model of ANS activation is required to simulate hemodynamic effects such as increased cardiac output in septic shock, elevated pulmonary artery pressure in left ventricular infarction, and elevated filling pressures in pericardial tamponade. This is the first known example of a minimal CVS model that includes a generic model of ANS activation and is shown to simulate diseases from throughout the CVS.  相似文献

Induction time for precipitation of calcium carbonate precipitated in mono ethylene glycol and water has been studied by conductivity measurements at ethylene glycol concentrations of 0–90 wt% and temperatures from 25 to 80 °C. The supersaturation ratios, S, were in the range of 3–10. The effect of the solvent was separated from the effect of the supersaturation and temperature. Increasing the concentration of ethylene glycol prolongs the induction times for precipitation of CaCO3 considerably although the supersaturation actually increases, especially at lower temperatures. It was shown that this effect cannot be explained by the change in the interfacial tension. Induction time studies in seeded and unseeded experiments were performed in order to separate changes in the nucleation rate from the impact of the growth time in the varying solvent compositions. The results show that crystal growth is retarded, causing the increased induction time in ethylene glycol containing solutions, and hence that the nucleation rate is actually promoted by ethylene glycol. The nucleation rates determined by measured particle numbers and induction times from unseeded experiments were underestimated for the same reason, thereby illustrating the complexity of nucleation rate investigations in mixed solvents.  相似文献

Polypropylene fibers produced in a compact-spinning process were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). With unrestrained fibers, the onset of melting increases with decreasing draw ratio, increasing Mw/Mn, decreasing extrusion temperature, increasing annealing ratio, and increasing draw-down ratio. These trends are discussed in terms of restraints and reorganization. The onset of melting is shifted to lower temperatures as the heating rate increases for all combinations of material and processing parameters, indicating suppressed reorganization. At low draw ratios, the height and width of the endotherm are affected by the spinline stress, and a secondary peak or shoulder is observed on the high temperature side of the main peak. The magnitude of the secondary peak increases with decreasing Mw/Mn, increasing draw ratio, decreasing draw-down ratio, and decreasing heating rate, but its position mainly depends on the heating rate. This indicates that the secondary peak may be due to the melting of structures that have been reorganized during the heating scan. As the draw ratio increases, the melting regime broadens, especially towards lower temperatures, and several maxima emerge on the DSC curve. Reorganization and shrinkage during heating may explain these observations. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Line integral convolution (LIC) is a powerful texture-based technique for visualizing vector fields. Due to the high computational expense of generating 3D textures and the difficulties of effectively displaying the result, LIC has most commonly been used to depict vector fields in 2D or over a surface in 3D. We propose new methods for more effective volume visualization of three-dimensional vector fields using LIC: 1) we present a fast method for computing volume LIC textures that exploits the sparsity of the input texture. 2) We propose the use of a shading technique, called limb darkening, to reveal the depth relations among the field lines. The shading effect is obtained simply by using appropriate transfer functions and, therefore, avoids using expensive shading techniques. 3) We demonstrate how two-field visualization techniques can be used to enhance the visual information describing a vector field. The volume LIC textures are rendered using texture-based rendering techniques, which allows interactive exploration of a vector field.  相似文献

A new method for diagnosing multiple diseases in large medical decision support systems based on causal probabilistic networks is proposed. The method is based on characteristics of the diagnostic process that we believe to be present in many diagnostic tasks, both inside and outside medicine. The diagnosis must often be made under uncertainty, choosing between diagnoses that each have small prior probabilities, but not so small that the possibility of two or more simultaneous diseases can be ignored. Often a symptom can be caused by several diseases and the presence of several diseases tend to aggravate the symptoms. For diagnostic problems that share these characteristic, we have proposed a method that operates in a number of phases: in the first phase only single diseases are considered and this helps to focus the attention on a smaller number of plausible diseases. In the second phase, pairs of diseases are considered, which make it possible to narrow down the field of plausible diagnoses further. In the following phases, larger subsets of diseases are considered. The method was applied to the diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders, using previous experience with the so-called MUNIN system as a starting point. The results showed that the method gave large reductions in computation time without compromising the computational accuracy in any substantial way. It is concluded that the method enables practical inference in large medical expert systems based on causal probabilistic networks.  相似文献

This paper describes the work undertaken to establish principles for the development of multicenter databases for reference values in clinical neurophysiology. The study was initiated because of interest of the involved laboratories in knowledge-based systems in electromyographic diagnosis, for which it was necessary to formalize the key concepts in the diagnostic process: diseases, pathophysiology and test results. This paper presents a model of the lung mechanics which simulates the pulmonary alveolar ventilation. The model includes aspects of: the alveolar geometry; pressure due to the chest wall; pressure due to surface tension determined by surfactant activity; pressure due to lung tissue elasticity; and pressure due to the hydrostatic effects of the lung tissue and blood. The cross-sectional area of the lungs in the supine position derived from computed tomography is used to construct a horizontally layered model, which simulates heterogeneous ventilation distribution from the non-dependent to the dependent layers of the lungs. The model is in agreement with experimentally measured hysteresis of the pressure-volume curve of the lungs, static lung compliance, changes in lung depth during breathing and density distributions at total lung capacity (TLC) and residual volume (RV). In the dependent layers of the lungs, alveolar collapse may occur at RV, depending on the assumptions concerning lung tissue elasticity at very low alveolar volumes. The model simulations showed that ventilation increased with depth in the lungs, although not as pronounced as observed experimentally. The model simulates alveolar ventilation including all of the mentioned components of the respiratory system and to be validated against all the above mentioned experimental data.  相似文献

The relation between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and osteoporosis has received increasing attention during the past decade. The prevalence of low bone mass in patients with IBD has been reported to be more than 50%. The development of a quick non-invasive method to diagnose osteoporosis (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) provides a practical tool to identify the patient who needs special attention. The aetiology of the bone disease in patients with IBD has still not been elucidated, but corticosteroids may play a major role. Studies on the prevention/treatment of IBD-related osteoporosis are scarce. In a single uncontrolled study hormone replacement therapy proved effective in preventing bone loss in peri- and post-menopausal women with IBD. A placebo-controlled study showed that supplementation with calcium and vitamin D prevents bone loss in patients with Crohn's disease. The present paper reviews our current knowledge on the mechanisms and epidemiology of IBD-related bone disease.  相似文献
