Fabrication of a poly-Si thin-film transistor with storage capacitor

The fabrication process of a low-temperature poly-Si thin-film transistor (TFT) with a storage capacitor was studied. The atmospheric-pressure chemical-vapour deposited SiO₂ protected the buried indium tin oxide (ITO) from reduction by a pure H₂ plasma treatment that was essential for the effective improvement of the poly-Si TFT characteristics. Thus, a storage capacitor with an ITO (picture electrode)-SiO₂-ITO (buried common electrode) structure was successfully fabricated. The poly-Si TFT with a channel width/length W/L ratio of 5 drove a 3 pF storage capacitor in 2 μs, and it showed superior driverability for LCD use. The TFT also had good hold characteristics under illumination for the realization of grey-scale representation.     

Gigahertz band GaAs monolithic limiting amplifier

The letter presents the design and performance of a gigahertz band limiting amplifier IC using GaAs MESFET IC technology. With a two-chip connection, an AM/PM conversion of 0.7°/dB over 43 dB input dynamic range at 1 GHz has been achieved.     

Moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma of the rectum: a case report of remarkable response to preoperative administration of FT suppository]

A 50-year-old man with moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma of the rectum was operated upon following preoperative administration of FT suppository. Digital examination, colonoscopy, and barium enema showed an elevated lesion with central ulcer of the rectum. Microscopically, the biopsy specimen demonstrated moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma. FT suppository (1,500 mg/day for 52 days, total 78 g) was administered on an outpatient basis. Rectal amputation including lymph node dissection was performed. The tumor markedly reduced in size and changed into a small ulcer in the resected specimen. Microscopically, the tumor degenerated and changed into xanthogranulomatous tissue with foamy histiocytes. Only two tubules of degenerated adenocarcinoma remained. FT suppository for rectal cancer is considered to be safe and effective.     

The effects of FR167653 in extended liver resection with ischemia in dogs

PURPOSE: We assess the neovascularity of clinically localized prostate cancer by immunohistochemistry using the monoclonal antibody CD34 in an attempt to identify associations between angiogenesis and disease progression following radical prostatectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Microvascularity was evaluated using the CD34 monoclonal antibody in archival paraffin embedded radical prostatectomy specimens from 149 patients followed from 3 to 10 years (mean 6.6). Vessels were quantified by counting a minimum of 2 selected microscopic fields (200x, 0.754 mm.2) from each tumor, area of prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia and prostatic hyperplasia, and given a numerical value representing the microvessel density count. RESULTS: Mean microvessel density count did not vary significantly with age or race. There was a significant association between the count and nuclear grade, Gleason sum and pathological stage. Cox survival analysis shows that microvessel density is significantly related to time to recurrence when considered as a continuous variable (p=0.03) as well as dichotomous variable (p=0.007) (microvessel density count less than 90 and 90 or greater). The 5-year recurrence-free survival was significantly higher for patients with a count less than 90 (71%) than for those with a count 90 or greater (51%) (p=0.006). The 5-year recurrence-free survival was also significantly different when microvessel density was used as a continuous variable (p=0.02). Controlling for stage, Gleason sum, race and nuclear grade, microvessel density remained significant in predicting recurrence (p=0.03) but when pretreatment prostate specific antigen was included in the model the count was no longer significant. The microvessel density count in the tumor area significantly increased with increasing Gleason sum and nuclear grade but it did not increase significantly in the adjacent benign prostate or areas of prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia in the same specimen. CONCLUSIONS: Microvascularity or neovascularity as measured by the CD34 antigen may be a prognostic marker of recurrence for prostate cancer patients after radical prostatectomy but more study in prostate specific antigen era patients with sufficient followup is needed.     

A juvenile case of frontotemporal dementia: neurochemical and neuropathological investigations

1. An autopsy case of frontotemporal dementia with onset at the early age of 28 years is reported. 2. The neuropathological features consisted of limited, knife-like frontotemporal atrophy with severe neuronal loss, spongiform change and gliosis, which is compatible with the frontotemporal dementia. 3. Biochemical determinations disclosed that biogenic amines and their metabolites, predominant in the dopaminergic markers, were depleted in the damaged regions. 4. Since biochemical data in frontotemporal dementia are few in previous studies, it will be determined whether these biochemical changes are characteristic for the juvenile type of frontotemporal dementia or not.     

Apoptosis as a criterion for sensitivity of uterine cervical adenocarcinoma to cisplatin

Two patients with uterine cervical adenocarcinoma received two courses of intra-arterial cisplatin administration. In the specimens of cervix 24 or 48 h after chemotherapy, marked apoptosis were observed. These bulky cervical tumors almost disappeared, and good PRs were confirmed by CT before operation. Apoptosis which is observed in the tissues of cervical adenocarcinoma 24 or 48 h after intra-arterial infusion of cisplatin, might be a new criterion of this chemotherapy effect.
