Physical map of the D6S149-D6S193 region on chromosome 6Q27 and its involvement in benign surface epithelial ovarian tumours

A detailed long range restriction map of the region defined by markers D6S149 and D6S193 on chromosome 6q27 has been constructed. This was achieved by YAC cloning and contig assembling of the same region. Seven YAC clones were found to span the almost 1000 Kb region flanked by the two markers which on the genetic map resulted to be 1.9 cM apart. With some of the characterized YAC clones we undertook a molecular cytogenetic analysis of 20 benign ovarian tumors. The rationale for this was the recent mapping to a region of chromosome 6q27, flanked by markers D6281 and D6S133, of a locus for the SV40-mediated immortalization of human cells (SEN6 gene). Noteworthy we found that the the D6S149-D6S193 region (comprised in the larger D6S281-D6S133 physical interval) was altered in all samples analysed adding support to the occurrence of a immortalization step in this type of tumors.     

Hybrid optical-digital method for local-displacement analysis by use of a phase-space representation

A method for evaluating the local deformation or displacement of an object in speckle metrology is described. The local displacements of the object in one direction are digitally coded in a one-dimensional specklegram. By optically performing the local spectrum of this pattern, one simultaneously achieves information about the local displacement and its spatial position. The good performance of this technique is demonstrated with computer-generated test signals.     

A semantic approach to remove incoherent items from a user profile and improve the accuracy of a recommender system

Recommender systems usually suggest items by exploiting all the previous interactions of the users with a system (e.g., in order to decide the movies to recommend to a user, all the movies she previously purchased are considered). This canonical approach sometimes could lead to wrong results due to several factors, such as a change in user preferences over time, or the use of her account by third parties. This kind of incoherence in the user profiles defines a lower bound on the error the recommender systems may achieve when they generate suggestions for a user, an aspect known in literature as magic barrier. This paper proposes a novel dynamic coherence-based approach to define the user profile used in the recommendation process. The main aim is to identify and remove, from the previously evaluated items, those not semantically adherent to the others, in order to make a user profile as close as possible to the user’s real preferences, solving the aforementioned problems. Moreover, reshaping the user profile in such a way leads to great advantages in terms of computational complexity, since the number of items considered during the recommendation process is highly reduced. The performed experiments show the effectiveness of our approach to remove the incoherent items from a user profile, increasing the recommendation accuracy.     

Studies on SiC, DLC and TiO2 thin films as piezoresistive sensor materials for high temperature application

The use of thin films as sensing elements for microsensor applications has been shown very attractive due to their low-cost fabrication, potential for integration with standard CMOS technologies and possibility of deposition on different substrate types. In particular, piezoresistive sensors based on thin films have been commonly developed because can be easily implemented using microfabrication processes and present the best relation between sensitivity and system complexity, which showing great advantages in term of device integration. In our previous works (Fraga et al. 2010, 2011a), we studied undoped and nitrogen-doped PECVD a-SiC thin films as alternative materials to replace the silicon piezoresistors in strain and pressure sensors for harsh environments. Here, we focused our attention on the piezoresistive properties of sputtered silicon carbide (SiC), diamond-like carbon (DLC) and titanium dioxide (TiO₂) thin films. These materials were evaluated in terms of sensitivity or gauge factor and of the influence of the temperature on this sensitivity, allowing a preliminary analysis of the applicability of these thin films in high temperature piezoresistive sensors.

The Interplay between Autonomic Nervous System and Inflammation across Systemic Autoimmune Diseases

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the immune system are deeply interrelated. The ANS regulates both innate and adaptive immunity through the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches, and an imbalance in this system can determine an altered inflammatory response as typically observed in chronic conditions such as systemic autoimmune diseases. Rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and systemic sclerosis all show a dysfunction of the ANS that is mutually related to the increase in inflammation and cardiovascular risk. Moreover, an interaction between ANS and the gut microbiota has direct effects on inflammation homeostasis. Recently vagal stimulation techniques have emerged as an unprecedented possibility to reduce ANS dysfunction, especially in chronic diseases characterized by pain and a decreased quality of life as well as in chronic inflammation.

The relationship between microsystems and macrosystems is considered in the context of quantum field formulation of statistical mechanics: it is argued that problems on foundations of quantum mechanics can be solved relying on this relationship. This discussion requires some improvement of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics which is briefly presented.
