A basic question in the theory of communicating processes is “When should two processes be considered equivalent?”. Attempts to answer this question have led to the concepts of observation equivalence, bisimulations, testing equivalence, failure equivalence, etc. The main point of this paper is to increase the understanding and motivation for two of these equivalences, namely failure and testing equivalences. The approach starts with the idea that the equivalence of processes should be reducible to the visible sequences of actions which a process performs in various contexts. This idea is implemented by a string-based semantic order for communicating processes where divergence is catastrophic. Under some assumptions about contexts, the resulting semantics is shown to be equivalent to theimproved failure semantics of Brookes and Roscoe(1) and also to themust testing-semantics of Hennessy and DeNicola.(2–4) This characterization gives independent support for the appropriateness of failures and testing. 相似文献

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective comparative study of pain drawings with findings on lumbar spine magnetic resonance imaging. OBJECTIVES: To assess the ability of the pain drawing to predict the presence of nerve root compression. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Most research work has concentrated on the ability of the pain drawing to act as a screening method for psychological distress with less work directed at the influence the anatomic abnormality has on the pain drawing. METHODS: One hundred thirty-four consecutive outpatients attending for lumbar magnetic resonance imaging in the investigation of back and leg pain completed pain drawings and psychological testing immediately before the examination. The pain drawing was analyzed by previously reported criteria, and the magnetic resonance imaging was assessed independently for the presence of nerve compression by three radiologists. Multivariate stepwise discriminant analysis was used to identify patients with nerve compression on the basis of their pain drawing. RESULTS: Nerve compression was predicted by numbness in the anterolateral aspect of the foot. There was considerable overlap in the appearances of the pain drawings between patients with and without nerve compression, and the pain drawing correctly classified only 58% of patients with nerve compression. CONCLUSIONS: The pain drawing is not a good predictor of nerve compression on magnetic resonance imaging in a group of patients investigated for back and leg pain. Factors associated with cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) of the upper extremities were studied retrospectively, using data from three apparel manufacturing plants in the southeastern United States. Reported CTDs among the employees at risk during fiscal years 1991 and 1992 were analyzed focusing on individual and plant variables. Results showed that CTD rates increased from 1991 to 1992 and fluctuated in a cyclical pattern each year, peaking during January, March, and August. Employee age and duration of employment were associated with CTD rates. Employees aged 45 to 49 had higher CTD rates than those in any other age groups. Employees with 1 to 3 years' experience had higher CTD rates than employees with more years of service. 相似文献

Beneficial use impairments (BUIs) under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement identify environmental issues requiring remedial action within the Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOCs). We conducted this study to support the assessment of the wildlife component of BUI 3: degradation of fish and wildlife populations. We compared bird and amphibian (frogs and toads) data from the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority’s Terrestrial Long-term Monitoring Program in the Toronto and Region AOC to an adjacent, but otherwise similar, reference watershed, Duffins Creek. Twelve of 13 targets were met within the AOC for forest bird, wetland bird, meadow bird and amphibian populations based on averages of mean annual values at sites within the AOC that were within two standard deviations of averages at sites in the Duffins Creek reference watershed between 2008 and 2017. Even though wildlife populations within the AOC were within the normal range of variability expected from a reference watershed, they were often at lower levels than within the Duffins Creek reference watershed. In addition, forest bird and amphibian populations were negatively affected by urbanization within the AOC and meadow bird indices declined. We conclude that while wildlife populations within the AOC currently meet targets for BUI 3, they continue to be negatively impacted by numerous stressors that are primarily related to past and ongoing urbanization. Thus, continued restoration of wildlife habitat and protection of existing habitat within the AOC is highly recommended. 相似文献

Concrete bridges were built originally to have a cost-effective maintenance free life of 120 years, however both in Europe and the USA this has proved to the totally optimistic. Concrete bridges require major maintenance after twenty to thirty years in order to extend their life The Acoustic Emission technique has been successfully applied to monitor and provide information on the safety of concrete bridges, but the processing of the AE data is often not trivial. This paper proposes a method of AE analysis to assess concrete bridges based on the fact that the AE energy is one of the effective parameters to evaluate the damage of a concrete structure. Results from experiments on concrete beams with different design and loading configurations are presented. It is argued that in some cases the state of damage of bridge beams can be estimated from the AE energy analysis when approximately 45% of the ultimate load has been applied. 相似文献

Design wind loads are partly based on extreme value analyses of historical wind data, and limitations on the quantity and spatial resolution of wind data pose a significant challenge in such analyses. A promising source of recent wind speed and direction data is the automated surface observing system (ASOS), a network of about 1000 standardized US weather stations. To facilitate the use of ASOS data for structural engineering purposes, procedures and software are presented for (a) extraction of peak gust wind data and thunderstorm observations from archived ASOS reports, (b) classification of wind data as thunderstorm or non-thunderstorm to enable separate analyses, and (c) construction of data sets separated by specified minimum time intervals to ensure statistical independence. The procedures are illustrated using approximately 20-year datasets from three ASOS stations near New York City. It is shown that for these stations thunderstorm wind speeds dominate the extreme wind climate at long return periods. Also presented are estimates based on commingled data sets (i.e., sets containing, indiscriminately, both non-thunderstorm and thunderstorm wind speeds), which until now have been used almost exclusively for extreme wind speed estimates in the US. The accurate establishment and maintenance of DNA methylation patterns is vital for mammalian development and disruption to these processes causes human disease. Our understanding of DNA methylation mechanisms has been facilitated by mathematical modelling, particularly stochastic simulations. Megabase-scale variation in DNA methylation patterns is observed in development, cancer and ageing and the mechanisms generating these patterns are little understood. However, the computational cost of stochastic simulations prevents them from modelling such large genomic regions. Here, we test the utility of three different mean-field models to predict summary statistics associated with large-scale DNA methylation patterns. By comparison to stochastic simulations, we show that a cluster mean-field model accurately predicts the statistical properties of steady-state DNA methylation patterns, including the mean and variance of methylation levels calculated across a system of CpG sites, as well as the covariance and correlation of methylation levels between neighbouring sites. We also demonstrate that a cluster mean-field model can be used within an approximate Bayesian computation framework to accurately infer model parameters from data. As mean-field models can be solved numerically in a few seconds, our work demonstrates their utility for understanding the processes underpinning large-scale DNA methylation patterns. 相似文献

1. The effects of histamine on gastric mucosal blood flow in the presence and absence of gastric acid secretion were studied in the rat. 2. Histamine, in doses greater than those required to stimulate maximal acid secretion, caused a small increase in mucosal blood flow per unit acid output. 3. When acid secretion was inhibited by methyl analogues of prostaglandin E2, histamine reduced arterial blood pressure and gave a dose dependent rise in mucosal blood flow. 4. When acid secretion was inhibited by the histamine H2-receptor antagonists, burimamide and metiamide, histamine still increased mucosal blood flow. 5. The use of H1-receptor antagonists to inhibit the histamine-induced hyperaemia was made difficult by their vasodilator actions. 6. The selective histamine H2-receptor agonist, 4-methyl histamine, had no effect on arterial blood pressure in doses which stimulated acid secretion. The increase in mucosal blood flow which accompanied the stimulation of acid secretion was inhibited by the anti-secretory prostaglandins and H2-receptor antagonists. 7. The selective histamine H1-receptor agonist, 2-pyridyl ethylamine, had no effect on acid output but increased resting mucosal blood flow. 8. These results suggest that histamine H2-receptors, primarily concerned with acid secretion, and H1-receptors concerned with vasodilatation are both present in the rat gastric mucosa. 相似文献
