Singular and combined effects of added water, sodium erythorbate and storage time on salt soluble protein extractability, bacteriological and chemical characteristics of preblended hot-boned beef were evaluated. Waterholding and gel forming capacities of preblended hot-boned beef containing either 0, 10 or 20% added water were determined. Significant interactions between added water level and storage time on microbial counts and between sodium erythorbate level and storage time on thiobarbituric acid values and residual nitrite levels were noted. The presence of sodium erythorbate resulted in a more (P < 0·05) rapid rate of nitrite disappearance, but it did not affect (P > 0·05) microbial counts. Salt-soluble protein extractability was not affected (P > 0·05) by added water, but more protein could be extracted with increasing storage time. A trend existed to suggest that the presence of added water in the meat preblends slightly improved the gel formation and waterholding capacities. 相似文献

The response of Atta sexdens rubropilosa Forel workers to essential oils, epicuticular wax and hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and methanol extracts of Eucalyptus maculata was evaluated. Hexane extracts of E. maculata interfered with the recognition mechanism among workers. The main active compounds identified from this plant were the sesquiterpenes elemol and beta-eudesmol. Schiff bases were obtained by condensation of 2-amino-l,3,4-thiadiazole with 5-substituted-salicylaldehydes which were further used to obtain complexes of the type [M(L)(2)]Cl(2), where M=Co(II), Cu(II), Ni(II) or Zn(II). The new compounds described here have been characterized by physical, spectral and analytical data, and have been screened for antibacterial activity against several bacterial strains such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The antibacterial potency of these Schiff bases increased upon chelation/complexation, against the tested bacterial species, opening new aproaches in the fight against antibiotic resistant strains. 相似文献

The resorption pit assay is classically used to evaluate osteoclast activity on bone or dentine slices that can be eroded by these cells. Two different types of cells were generated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells cultured in the presence of M-CSF + sRANKL or with M-CSF + LPS. At the end of the culture period (21 days), cells were discarded and the dentine slices stained with toluidine blue and examined with an NT9100 Wyco vertical scanning profilometer. The images of the dentine surface were corrected for tilt and the eroded volume was calculated on the whole images. The depth of the eroded pits was determined. The data files were used to reconstruct the surface of the slices by standardizing the ground level to compare both conditions. Osteoclasts generated with M-CSF + sRANKL were capable of resorbing a more important volume than those generated with M-CSF + LPS. In addition, the formers were able to resorb the dentine matrix more deeply. Data provided by the microscope were used to reconstruct three-dimensional images of the dentine slices with pseudo colours varying with the depth of erosion. Vertical scanning profilometry, a technique used to measure the roughness of polished or etched surfaces in metallurgic industry, can be used to accurately measure the eroded volume and the mean erosion depth done by osteoclasts in the resorption pit assay. 相似文献

The biodegradation characteristics of palm oil mill effluent (POME) and the related microbial community were studied in both actual sequential anaerobic ponds in Malaysia and enrichment cultures. The significant degradation of the POME was observed in the second pond, in which the temperature was 35-37 °C. In this pond, biodegradation of major long chain fatty acids (LCFA), such as palmitic acid (C16:0) and oleic acid (C18:1), was also confirmed. The enrichment culture experiment was conducted with different feeding substrates, i.e. POME, C16:0 and C18:1, at 35 °C. Good recovery of methane indicated biodegradation of feeds in the POME and C16:0 enrichments. The methane production rate of the C18:1 enrichment was slower than other substrates and inhibition of methanogenesis was frequently observed. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analyses indicated the existence of LCFA-degrading bacteria, such as the genus Syntrophus and Syntorophomonas, in all enrichment cultures operated at 35 °C.
