This study investigated differences in attention and learning among Guatemalan Mayan and European American children, ages 5–11 years, who were present but not addressed while their sibling was shown how to construct a novel toy. Each child waited with a distracter toy for her or his turn to make a different toy. Nonaddressed children from Mayan traditional families (with little maternal involvement in Western schooling; n = 40) showed more sustained attention and learning than their counterparts from Mayan families with extensive involvement in Western schooling (n = 40) or European American children (with extensive family involvement in schooling; n = 40). The nonaddressed Mayan children from highly schooled families in turn attended more than the European American children. These findings are consistent with research showing that traditional indigenous ways of organizing learning emphasize observation of ongoing interactions. Growing evidence suggests that multifaceted diseases as cancer can be effectively tackled by hitting simultaneously different biological targets and monitoring patient‐specific responses. Combinatorial therapies, relying on the administration of two or more molecules with different cytotoxic mechanisms, are rapidly progressing in the clinic. Here, 100 nm spherical polymeric nanoconstructs (SPNs) are proposed for the combinatorial treatment of tumors by codelivering a potent antimitotic drug—docetaxel (DTXL)—and a broad spectrum anti‐inflammatory molecule—curcumin (CURC). In vitro, SPNs loaded with DTXL and CURC induce a threefold decrease in IC50 as compared to DTXL‐loaded SPNs. This synergic antitumor effect is also significant in mouse models of glioblastoma multiforme, where, after 22 d of treatment, the combinatorial approach leads to complete disease regression. At 90 d post‐treatment initiation, mice injected with DTXL + CURC SPNs have a 100% survival, whereas only 50% of the DTXL SPN treated mice survive. SPNs are also labeled with radioactive 64Cu(DOTA) molecules to document, via PET imaging, the progressive tumor mass shrinkage. Sensitization of DTXL by CURC is associated with NF‐κB downregulation and increased apoptosis. These theranostic nanoconstructs could be used for combinatorial treatment and assessment of therapeutic efficacy in other malignancies.  相似文献

In this paper, we design a controller for stabilising a control system. The technique used for designing the controller includes a linear regulator and an asymptotical observer which form the controller. The linear regulator designed is a feedback of estimated states and also it must minimise a quadratic performance index. The gain matrix of optimal feedback is obtained by solving the Riccati equation, whilst the gain observer matrix is computed by making use of symmetrical systems properties. The properties of symmetrical systems allow us to find the optimal gain matrix of the observer without solving the dual Riccati equation, we only need to compute the matrices of controllability and observability. Having calculated the gain matrices of regulator and of observer, we proceeded to compute the transfer function of the observer-based controller.  相似文献

Hexagonal BN is an unusual material in that it is both highly thermally conductive as well as an electrical insulator. Additionally, hBN is also thermally stable in air. This unusual combination of properties makes hBN of significant interest for thermal management. Unfortunately, hBN is not easily consolidated into substrates without the addition of second phases which generally result in poorer thermal performance. This research investigates the potential to utilize this material to dissipate heat from high‐voltage, high‐power electrical devices. Specifically, a process to coat individual platelets of commercial hexagonal BN powder with a layer of amorphous aluminum oxide was developed. The coated hexagonal BN was then hot‐pressed to form a highly thermally conductive substrate. The process to coat hexagonal BN platelets with aluminum oxide was accomplished by mixing hexagonal BN with AlCl3 containing some water, then evaporation of excess AlCl3 to form a Al, Cl, and O layer on hexagonal BN. This product was then heated in air to convert the surface layer into aluminum oxide. Following hot pressing to 1950°C and 10 ksi, the consolidated composite has through‐plane and in‐plane thermal conductivity of 14 and 157 W·(m·K)?1, respectively, at room temperature.  相似文献

Mexico City Metropolitan Area children and young adults exposed to high concentrations of air pollutants including fine and ultrafine particulate matter (PM) vs. clean air controls, exhibit myocardial inflammation and inflammasome activation with a differential right and left ventricular expression of key inflammatory genes and inflammasomes. We investigated the mRNA expression levels of the prion protein gene PRNP, which plays an important role in the protection against oxidative stress and metal toxicity, and the glucose regulated protein 78, a key protein in endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress signaling, in ventricular autopsy samples from 30 children and young adults age 19.97 ± 6.8 years with a lifetime of low (n:4) vs. high (n:26) air pollution exposures. Light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy studies were carried out in human ventricles, and electron microscopy studies were also done in 5 young, highly exposed Mexico City dogs. There was significant left ventricular PRNP and bi-ventricular GRP78 mRNA up-regulation in Mexico City young urbanites vs. controls. PRNP up-regulation in the left ventricle was significantly different from the right, p < 0.0001, and there was a strong left ventricular PRNP and GRP78 correlation (p = 0.0005). Marked abnormalities in capillary endothelial cells, numerous nanosized particles in myocardial ER and in abnormal mitochondria characterized the highly exposed ventricles. Early and sustained cardiac ER stress could result in detrimental irreversible consequences in urban children, and while highly complex systems maintain myocardial homeostasis, failure to compensate for chronic myocardial inflammation, oxidative and ER stress, and particles damaging myocardial organelles may prime the development of pathophysiological cardiovascular states in young urbanites. Nanosized PM could play a key cardiac myocyte toxicity role.  相似文献

Children commonly observe and pitch in to ongoing activities in Indigenous communities of Mexico, according to ethnographic research. The present study examines the generality of this approach to learning by comparing its use among Mexican immigrants of two cultural backgrounds in the United States. Results showed more sustained attention to (and learning from) instruction directed to another person by 22 U.S. Mexican-heritage 6- to 11-year-old children whose families likely have experience with Indigenous practices (and limited involvement in Western schooling), compared with 16 U.S. Mexican-heritage children whose families have extensive involvement in Western schooling (and related practices). In this study, a set of mechanical properties of geopolymers, synthesized by alkali (NaOH or KOH) activation of metakaolin and SiO2 mixture, were characterized at ambient temperature. Samples with K/Al or Na/Al atomic ratios equal to 1, Si/Al atomic ratios in the 1.25–2.5 range and H2O/Al2O3 molar ratios of 11 or 13 are cured at 80 °C for 24 and 48 h before characterization, to determine effect of Si/Al ratio and curing time on the structure and mechanical properties of geopolymers. The structure of synthesized geopolymers characterized using XRD, NMR, SEM, and density measurements was correlated to their mechanical properties, including compressive strength, Young’s modulus, hardness, and fracture toughness. The results of this study suggest a strong effect of Si/Al ratios (in the 1.5–2 range), density, and microstructure on the maximum strength, Young’s modulus, and hardness of geopolymers. There were also notable differences in strength between samples cured for 24 and 48 h, suggesting that the degree of geopolymerization reaction also plays important role in mechanical properties of this new class of inorganic polymers.  相似文献

The toughness and the rheology of polypropylene (PP)‐calcium carbonate (CaCO3) nanocompounds using stearic acid as an interface modifier were studied in this work. Compounding of the nanocomposites was carried out with a twin‐screw extruder. The benchmark samples (untreated) and stearic acid‐treated CaCO3 nanoparticles were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The nanocompounds were characterized by impact test, tensile test, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), rheological analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The elongation‐at‐break and impact resistance were increased in nanocompounds with interface modifier (stearic acid in hopper of the extruder). Nanocompounds with stearic acid showed the best dispersion state. Stearic acid helps to reduce complex viscosity acting as a lubricant, reducing frictional forces between nanoparticles of calcium carbonate (NCC) and PP chains. The low specificity and high risk of intracranial hemorrhage associated with currently approved thrombolytic therapies limit their efficacy in recanalizing occluded vessels. Here, a nanoscale thrombolytic agent is demonstrated by immobilizing tissue plasminogen activator molecules (tPA) over 20 nm clustered iron oxide nanocubes (NCs). The resulting nanoconstructs (tPA–NCs) are capable of dissolving clots via both direct interaction of tPA with the fibrin network (chemical lysis) and localized hyperthermia upon stimulation of superparamagnetic NCs with alternating magnetic fields (AMFs) (mechanical lysis). In vitro, as compared to free tPA, the proposed nanoconstructs demonstrate a ≈100‐fold increase in dissolution rate, possibly because of a more intimate interaction of tPA with the fibrin network. The clot dissolution rate is further enhanced (≈10‐fold) by mild, localized heating resulting from the exposure of tPA–NCs to AMF. Intravital microscopy experiments demonstrate blood vessel reperfusion within a few minutes post tail vein injection of tPA–NCs. The proposed nanoconstructs also exhibit high transverse relaxivity (>400 × 10–3 m ?1 s?1) for magnetic resonance imaging. The multifunctional properties and the 3 orders of magnitude enhancement in clot dissolution make tPA–NCs a promising nano‐theranosis agent in thrombotic disease.  相似文献
