Melatonin and resistance exercise alone have been shown to increase the levels of growth hormone (GH). The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of ingestion of a single dose of melatonin and heavy resistance exercise on serum GH, somatostatin (SST), and other hormones of the GH/insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) axis. Physically active males (n = 30) and females (n = 30) were randomly assigned to ingest either a melatonin supplement at 0.5 mg or 5.0 mg, or 1.0 mg of dextrose placebo. After a baseline blood sample, participants ingested the supplement and underwent blood sampling every 15 min for 60 min, at which point they underwent a single bout of resistance exercise with the leg press for 7 sets of 7 reps at 85% 1-RM. After exercise, participants provided additional blood samples every 15 min for a total of 120 min. Serum free GH, SST, IGF-1, IGFBP-1, and IGFBP-3 were determined with ELISA. Data were evaluated as the peak pre- and post-exercise values subtracted from baseline and the delta values analyzed with separate three-way ANOVA (p < 0.05). In males, when compared to placebo, 5.0 mg melatonin caused GH to increase (p = 0.017) and SST to decrease prior to exercise (p = 0.031), whereas both 0.5 and 5.0 mg melatonin were greater than placebo after exercise (p = 0.045) and less than placebo for SST. No significant differences occurred for IGF-1; however, males were shown to have higher levels of IGFBP-1 independent of supplementation (p = 0.004). The 5.0 mg melatonin dose resulted in higher IGFBP-3 in males (p = 0.017). In conclusion, for males 5.0 mg melatonin appears to increase serum GH while concomitantly lowering SST levels; however, when combined with resistance exercise both melatonin doses positively impacts GH levels in a manner not entirely dependent on SST.  相似文献

Exact closed-form solutions describing the transient and steady-state temperature of a lumped mass, linearly coupled to a fixed-temperature boundary and radiatively coupled to a second fixed-temperature boundary, with a constant impressed heat load, are derived. Raw topaz has been found to act as a high-temperature bond for both raw and calcined kyanite. It is thought that this bonding action is due in part to volatiles which emerge from the raw topaz between 1000° and 1200°C. Some of the topaz decomposition products are absorbed and retained by the calcined kyanite. Within the limits of this investigation, all refractories which contained either calcined or raw kyanite, or mixtures of the two, with a minimum of 10% raw topaz had a good structure and were well bonded. The results of the load tests indicated that increased firing temperatures in the preheat improved the load resistance, but excellent high-temperature resistance was obtained by preheating as low as 1300°C. in laboratory kilns.  相似文献

The Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) is evaluating and developing advanced and innovative concepts for controlling Hg emissions from North Dakota lignite-fired power plants with the goal of achieving 50%–90% Hg removal at one-half to three-fourths the current estimated costs. Pilot-scale tests were performed to evaluate potential sorbents and fuel additives for removing Hg from North Dakota lignite (Freedom and Center Mines) combustion flue gases. The Hg sorbents and Hg0 oxidation and sorbent enhancement additives were evaluated separately, and most were also tested in combination. A 580 MJ/h (550,000 Btu/h) pulverized coal combustion system was used to conduct sorbent injections and/or lignite additive additions upstream of three particulate control devices (PCDs): 1) an electrostatic precipitator (ESP), 2) a spray dryer and fabric filter, and 3) a retrofit advanced hybrid particulate collector (AHPC) filter (an ESP followed by an AHPC filter). ASTM International Method D6784-02 (Ontario Hydro method) and continuous Hg monitors were used to measure Hg species concentrations across the control devices. The effects of sorbent injection and coal additive addition rates on Hg removal were evaluated for each PCD option. The effects of continuous injection and batch addition of sorbents on the Hg removal performance of the ESP/AHPC filter system were also investigated. Increasing injection and additive rates and improving contact between the sorbents and flue gases generally promoted Hg capture. Most of the coal additives tested significantly enhanced PCD Hg removal, especially in the presence of a sorbent.  相似文献

A lignite coal ash produced in a low-Btu atmospheric pressure gasifier has been studied by X-ray diffraction. The ash was dominantly crystalline and consisted of CaOMgONa2O-silicates (melilite, merwinite, Ca2SiO4-bredigite, nepheline/carnegieite), oxides (ferrite spinel, quartz, periclase, hematite), phases formed by reaction with water or precipitation from solutions used in ash handling (calcite, portlandite, brucite, thenardite, ettringite, gypsum, goethite) and several additional trace phases (plagioclase, pyroxene, cristobalite, serpentine and talc).  相似文献

Background

This study's purpose investigated the impact of different macronutrient distributions and varying caloric intakes along with regular exercise for metabolic and physiological changes related to weight loss.

Methods

One hundred forty-one sedentary, obese women (38.7 ± 8.0 yrs, 163.3 ± 6.9 cm, 93.2 ± 16.5 kg, 35.0 ± 6.2 kg?m-2, 44.8 ± 4.2% fat) were randomized to either no diet + no exercise control group (CON) a no diet + exercise control (ND), or one of four diet + exercise groups (high-energy diet [HED], very low carbohydrate, high protein diet [VLCHP], low carbohydrate, moderate protein diet [LCMP] and high carbohydrate, low protein [HCLP]) in addition to beginning a 3x?week-1 supervised resistance training program. After 0, 1, 10 and 14 weeks, all participants completed testing sessions which included anthropometric, body composition, energy expenditure, fasting blood samples, aerobic and muscular fitness assessments. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA with an alpha of 0.05 with LSD post-hoc analysis when appropriate.

Results

All dieting groups exhibited adequate compliance to their prescribed diet regimen as energy and macronutrient amounts and distributions were close to prescribed amounts. Those groups that followed a diet and exercise program reported significantly greater anthropometric (waist circumference and body mass) and body composition via DXA (fat mass and % fat) changes. Caloric restriction initially reduced energy expenditure, but successfully returned to baseline values after 10 weeks of dieting and exercising. Significant fitness improvements (aerobic capacity and maximal strength) occurred in all exercising groups. No significant changes occurred in lipid panel constituents, but serum insulin and HOMA-IR values decreased in the VLCHP group. Significant reductions in serum leptin occurred in all caloric restriction + exercise groups after 14 weeks, which were unchanged in other non-diet/non-exercise groups.

Conclusions

Overall and over the entire test period, all diet groups which restricted their caloric intake and exercised experienced similar responses to each other. Regular exercise and modest caloric restriction successfully promoted anthropometric and body composition improvements along with various markers of muscular fitness. Significant increases in relative energy expenditure and reductions in circulating leptin were found in response to all exercise and diet groups. Macronutrient distribution may impact circulating levels of insulin and overall ability to improve strength levels in obese women who follow regular exercise.  相似文献

Since 5-HT1B receptor mRNA was reported in rat aorta, and 5-HT1B receptor activation has been linked to vascular contraction, we explored sumatriptan-induced contractility and immunohistochemical density of 5-HT1B receptor protein in rat aorta. Sumatriptan (up to 10(-4) M), a 5-HT1B/1D receptor agonist, did not contract the endothelial intact or denuded rat aorta, even in the presence of L-NAME or after induction of modest tone with PGF2 alpha (10(-6) M). Sumatriptan also did not relax aortic preparations precontract with PGF2 alpha (3 x 10(-6) M) or phenylephrine (3 x 10(-7) M). Using a polyclonal antibody directed against the 5-HT1B receptor, minimal 5-HT1B receptor protein was detected in either the endothelium or smooth muscle of the rat aorta. However, dense 5-HT1B receptor protein was found in the vascular smooth muscle of the vasa vasorum supplying the aorta. Thus, the 5-HT1B receptor mRNA detected in tissue extracts of the rat aorta most likely reflects 5-HT1B receptor expression in the arterioles of the vasa vasorum. These studies support the link between the 5-HT1B receptor and vascular contraction in that the aorta with low density of 5-HT1B receptors lacked responses to sumatriptan, an agonist thought to contract blood vessels via 5-HT1B/1D receptors. Furthermore, caution must be observed when using 5-HT1B receptor mRNA to suggest receptor protein in tissues since this RT-PCR product may be derived predominantly from small blood vessels.  相似文献

Mercury speciation measurements during injections of 10 microg/m3 Hg0(g) into a 42-MJ/h combustion system containing gaseous O2-Ar- and O2-N2-rich mixtures indicate that 43 and 55% of the Hg (g) spike was transformed rapidly (< 0.1 s) to Hg2+X(g) within a refractory-lined heat exchanger where gas temperatures decrease from approximately 620 to 200 degrees C. O2(g) is the probable Hg0(g) oxidant (i.e. X = O2-). The apparent formation of HgO(g) involves a heterogeneous reaction with adsorbed Hg0 or O2 on refractory surfaces or a Hg0(g)-O2(g) reaction catalyzed by corundum (Al2O3) and/or rutile (TiO2) components of the refractory. The potential catalytic effects of Al2O3 and TiO2 on Hg0(g) oxidation were investigated by injecting Al2O3 and TiO2 powders into approximately 650 degrees C subbituminous coal (Powder River Basin, Montana, USA) combustion flue gas. On-line Hg0(g) and total mercury measurements indicate, however, that Al2O3 and TiO2 injections were ineffective in promoting the formation of additional Hg2+X(g). Apparently, either the chemically complex flue gas hindered the catalytic effects of Al2O3 and TiO2, or these compounds are simply not Hg0(g) oxidation catalysts.  相似文献
