WC-(Fe, Ni, C) cemented carbides can be successfully transformation-toughened by careful control of binder composition and
taking into consideration the effect of thermal residual stress on the transformation characteristics of the binder. An additional
degree of control on the metastability of the binder phase can be achievedvia thermomechanical treatments. These treatments consist of transforming an austenitic binder to martensite by cooling in liquid
nitrogen followed by a suitable high temperature heat treatment to reaustenitize it. Thein situ deformation of the binder caused by the large shape and volume changes that accompany its transformation to martensite thus
provides the mechanical component of the thermomechanical treatment. Subsequent heat treatments not only reaustenitize the
binder but also modify its susceptibility to undergo stress-induced transformation. It is shown that the hardness/fracture
toughness behavior of WC-(Fe, Ni, C) cemented carbides can be significantly improved by the application of such treatments.
A qualitative explanation for the enhancements in fracture toughness provided by thermomechanical treatments is offered based
on a careful examination of the changes in phase constitution of the binder that occur during these treatments.

The problem of optimal divisible load distribution in distributed bus networks employing a heterogeneous cluster of processors is addressed. The objective is to minimize the total processing time of the entire load subject to the communication and computation delays. In the mathematical model we adopt, both the granularity of the load fractions and all the associated overheads (also referred to as start-up costs) in the process of communication and computation, are considered explicitly in the problem formulation. We introduce a directed flow graph model for representing the load distribution process. This representation is novel to this literature. With this model, we first derive a closed-form solution for an optimal processing time. We propose an integer approximation algorithm and derive ultimate performance bounds for the class of homogeneous networks. We then extend the problem to a special class of application problems in which the data partitioning is restricted to a finite number of partitions. For this case, we present a recursive procedure to obtain optimal processing time. We then present two different integer approximation algorithms-PIA and IIA that could generate integer load fractions and yield suboptimal solutions. The choice of these algorithms are also analyzed. This paper evaluates in-soil tensile load-strain characteristics of geogrids with the help of a custom designed and developed in-soil tensile setup in the laboratory. Displacement controlled in-soil tensile tests were carried out to evaluate the effect of normal stress, soil type, and presence of sand-sandwiched layer, on the tensile load-strain characteristics of geogrid. Confinement of geogrid within the soil and application of normal stress were found to increase the mobilized tensile load and secant tensile stiffness of geogrid. Secant stiffness improvement factors were determined to quantify the improvement in tensile load-strain characteristics of geogrid under confinement, on comparison to in-isolation values. Geogrid was observed to exhibit lower secant tensile stiffness when embedded in marginal soil, moist-compacted at wet of optimum. However, the concept of sand-sandwiched geogrid was found to improve the tensile load-strain behaviour of geogrids embedded in marginal soil compacted at wet of optimum. 相似文献

This paper reports the results of laboratory study performed on expansive soil reinforced with geofibers and demonstrates that discrete and randomly distributed geofibers are useful in restraining the swelling tendency of expansive soils. Swelling characteristics of remoulded expansive soil specimens reinforced with varying fiber content (f = 0.25% and 0.50%) and aspect ratio (l/b = 15, 30 and 45) were studied. One-dimensional swell-consolidation tests were conducted on oedometer specimens. Reduction in heave and swelling pressure was the maximum at low aspect ratios at both the fiber contents of 0.25% and 0.50%. Finally, the mechanism by which discrete and randomly distributed fibers restrain swelling of expansive soil is explained with the help of soil–fiber interaction. 相似文献

An Indian industrial naphtha containing mixture of various hydrocarbons belong to n-paraffins, isoparaffins, naphthenes and aromatics falling in C5 to C9 carbon range has been studied for its octane boosting through the production of isoparaffins over various Pt loaded zeolite catalysts possessing different acidity and porosity properties. Optimum balance of acid and metal functionalities in 0.6 wt.% Pt loaded on BEA zeolite helped in achieving highest increase in research octane number (RON) from 44 to 80, suitable for gasoline applications, through the production of lower isoparaffins (iC4-iC6) along with C7+ isoparaffins. 相似文献

Using a fluorescence-based method, we have determined the number of thiol-derivatized single-stranded oligonucleotides bound to gold nanoparticles and their extent of hybridization with complementary oligonucleotides in solution. Oligonucleotide surface coverages of hexanethiol 12-mer oligonucleotides on gold nanoparticles (34 +/- 1 pmol/cm2) were significantly higher than on planar gold thin films (18 +/- 3 pmol/cm2), while the percentage of hybridizable strands on the gold nanoparticles (1.3 +/- 0.3 pmol/cm2, 4%) was lower than for gold thin films (6 +/- 2 pmol/cm2, 33%). A gradual increase in electrolyte concentration over the course of oligonucleotide deposition significantly increases surface coverage and consequently particle stability. In addition, oligonucleotide spacer sequences improve the hybridization efficiency of oligonucleotide-modified nanoparticles from approximately 4 to 44%. The surface coverage of recognition strands can be tailored using coadsorbed diluent oligonucleotides. This provides a means of indirectly controlling the average number of hybridized strands per nanoparticle. The work presented here has important implications with regard to understanding interactions between modified oligonucleotides and metal nanoparticles, as well as optimizing the sensitivity of gold nanoparticle-based oligonucleotide detection methods. 相似文献

The objective of this paper is to examine the permeability characteristics of geosynthetic layers under confinement with soils having relatively low permeability. For this purpose, a large permeameter was custom designed and a series of permeability tests were carried-out by varying soil type and number of geosynthetic layers. Further, effect of provision of sand cushion and the thickness of sand cushion on permeability characteristics was also examined. Normal stress was increased in intervals of 50 kPa up to 200 kPa. With an increase in normal stress, a decrease in the permeability characteristics of a geosynthetic-reinforced soil was observed. The permeability characteristics were found to improve significantly with the provision of sand cushion and an increase in its thickness. Based on the definition of equivalent coefficient of permeability of stratified soils for parallel flow, an equation for estimating coefficient of permeability of soil–geosynthetic system with and without sand cushion is proposed. Considering the application of geosynthetics in reinforced slopes and walls with low-permeable backfill soils, a suitable geosynthetic with a thin layer of sand cushion is recommended. In this paper we study the genericity of simultaneous stabilizability, simultaneous strong stabilizability, and simultaneous pole assignability, in linear multivariable systems. The main results of the paper had been previously established by Ghosh and Byrnes using state-space methods. In contrast, the proofs in the present paper are based on input-output arguments, and are much simpler to follow, especially in the case of simultaneous and simultaneous strong stabilizability. Moreover, the input-output methods used here suggest computationally reliable algorithms for solving these two types of problems.
