A simple but comprehensive model considering homogeneous and micellar nucleation, coagulation, entry of radicals to particles and to micelles and radicals' exit from particles, is presented. The model is validated, in a starved semicontinuous heterophase polymerization of ethyl methacrylate, at three monomer addition rates. The model accurately describes the overall and instantaneous conversion, the average particle density and diameter, and the number and weight average molar masses evolutions over time. It is found that even though the average number of radicals is much smaller than 0.5, the system is not 0-1. An empirical function was used to describe the gel effect. The homogeneous nucleation was the prevailing mechanism for particle formation and large exit rates of radicals were observed. POLYM. ENG. The production and properties of blends of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(ethylene naphthalene 2,6‐dicarboxylate) (PEN) with three modified clays are reported. Octadecylammonium chloride and maleic anhydride (MAH) are used to modify the surface of the montmorillonite–Na+ clay particles (clay–Na+) to produce clay–C18 and clay–MAH, respectively, before they are mixed with the PET/PEN system. The transesterification degree, hydrophobicity and the effect of the clays on the mechanical, rheological and thermal properties are analysed. The PET–PEN/clay–C18 system does not show any improvements in the mechanical properties, which is attributed to poor exfoliation. On the other hand, in the PET–PEN/clay–MAH blends, the modified clay restricts crystallization of the matrix, as evidenced in the low value of the crystallization enthalpy. The process‐induced PET–PEN transesterification reaction is affected by the clay particles. Clay–C18 induces the largest proportion of naphthalate–ethylene–terephthalate (NET) blocks, as opposed to clay–Na+ which renders the lowest proportion. The clay readily incorporates in the bulk polymer, but receding contact‐angle measurements reveal a small influence of the particles on the surface properties of the sample. The clay–Na+ blend shows a predominant solid‐like behaviour, as evidenced by the magnitude of the storage modulus in the low‐frequency range, which reflects a high entanglement density and a substantial degree of polymer–particle interactions. OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of gastric intramucosal pH for the evaluation of tissue perfusion and prediction of hemodynamic complications in critically ill children. DESIGN: Open prospective study without controls. SETTING: Pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) of a tertiary care university pediatric hospital. PATIENTS: Thirty critically ill children (16 boys and 14 girls), age range: 3 months-12 years. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: A tonometry catheter was placed in the stomach of all patients on admission to the pediatric ICU. Simultaneous tonometry and arterial gas measurements were made on admittance and every 6-12 h throughout the study; a total of 202 measurements were made. The catheter was removed after extubation and/or when the patient was hemodynamically stable. Intramucosal pH was calculated using the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation based on the pCO2 of the tonometer and arterial bicarbonate. Intramucosal pH values between 7.30 and 7.45 were considered to be normal. The patient's condition was analyzed using the Pediatric Risk Mortality Score (PRISM). The relations between intramucosal pH and the presence of major hemodynamic complications (cardiopulmonary arrest, shock), minor hemodynamic complications (hypotension, hypovolemia or arrhythmia), death, PRISM score and the duration of the stay in the pediatric ICU were analyzed. Intramucosal pH on admission was 7.48 +/- 0.15 on average (range 7.04-7.68). Five patients (16%) had an intramucosal pH lower than 7.30 on admission; these patients did not have a higher incidence of hemodynamic complications. The 16 patients (53%) who had an intramucosal pH of less than 7.30 at some time during the course of their disease had more hemodynamic complications than the patients who did not have pH lower than 7.30 (p < 0.0001). Every case of cardiopulmonary arrest and shock was related to intramucosal pH of less than 7.30. Patients with major complications (cardiopulmonary arrest and shock) had lower intramucosal pHs than those with minor hemodynamic complications (p = 0.03); similarly, they had low intramucosal pH readings more often than those with minor complications (p = 0.0032). Intramucosal pH values less than 7.30 had a sensitivity of 90% and a specificity of 98% as a predictor of hemodynamic complications. There was no relation between intramucosal pH lower than 7.30 and either PRISM or the duration of the stay in the pediatric ICU. Patients with intramucosal pH less than 7.20 had a higher PRISM than the patients who did not have pH lower than 7.20 (p < 0.05). A patient who died during the study due to cardiopulmonary arrest had prior intramucosal pH measurements of 7.23 and 7.10, and three patients died of late complications after the end of the study. Hemodynamic complications were not detected with arterial pH. Gap pH (arterial pH-intramucosal pH) and standard pH measurements yielded the same results as gastric intramucosal pH. CONCLUSION: Intramucosal pH could provide a useful early indication of hemodynamic complications in critically ill children.  相似文献

The accepted model of color naming postulates that 11 “basic” color terms representing 11 common perceptual experiences show increased processing salience due to a theorized linkage between perception, visual neurophysiology, and cognition. We tested this theory, originally proposed by Berlin and Kay in 1969. Experiment 1 tested salience by comparing unconstrained color naming across two languages, English and Vietnamese. Results were compared with previous research by Berlin and Kay, Boynton and Olson, and colleagues. Experiment 2 validated our stimuli by comparing OSA, Munsell, and newly rendered “basic” exemplars using colorimetry and behavioral measures. Our results show that the relationship between the visual and verbal domains is more complex than current theory acknowledges. An interpoint distance model of color‐naming behavior is proposed as an alternative perspective on color‐naming universality and color‐category structure. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present study was carried out to examine if the positional distribution of medium-chain fatty acid (MCF) in dietary synthetic fat influences lymphatic transport of dietary fat and the chemical composition of chylomicrons in rats with permanent cannulation of thoracic duct. Four types of synthetic triacylglycerol were prepared: (i) sn-1(3) MCF-sn 2 linoleic acid, (ii) interesterified sn-1(3) MCF-sn 2 linoleic acid, (iii) sn-2 MCF-sn-1(3) linoleic acid, and (iv) interesterified sn-2 MCF-sn-1(3) linoleic acid. A purified diet composed of equal amounts of the synthetic fat and cocoa butter was given to rats with permanent lymph duct cannulation. The positional distribution of MCF in the dietary fat had no significant effect on the lymph flow, triacylglycerol output, phospholipid output, lipid composition of chylomicrons, or the particle size. The positional distribution of MCF in the synthetic triacylglycerol was maintained in the chylomicron triacylglycerol. These results showed that MCF in the dietary triacylglycerol is transported into lymphatics and the positional distribution is well preserved in chylomicron triacylglycerol.  相似文献

In this paper, a novel model predictive control (MPC) for constrained (non-square) linear systems to track piecewise constant references is presented. This controller ensures constraint satisfaction and asymptotic evolution of the system to any target which is an admissible steady-state. Therefore, any sequence of piecewise admissible setpoints can be tracked without error. If the target steady state is not admissible, the controller steers the system to the closest admissible steady state.These objectives are achieved by: (i) adding an artificial steady state and input as decision variables, (ii) using a modified cost function to penalize the distance from the artificial to the target steady state (iii) considering an extended terminal constraint based on the notion of invariant set for tracking. The control law is derived from the solution of a single quadratic programming problem which is feasible for any target. Furthermore, the proposed controller provides a larger domain of attraction (for a given control horizon) than the standard MPC and can be explicitly computed by means of multiparametric programming tools. On the other hand, the extra degrees of freedom added to the MPC may cause a loss of optimality that can be arbitrarily reduced by an appropriate weighting of the offset cost term.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to understand the viewpoint of healthcare providers with regard to patient safety in outpatient surgery settings. Two methods were used to gather data from the healthcare providers: (1) questionnaire with open-ended questions about six predefined stages of the patient care process; (2) survey with closed questions. With the first method, the main quality and safety of care issues concerned communication to patients, coordination of reports and forms, patient and staff time pressures and standards of care. The first two stages of the outpatient surgery process, i.e. patient work-up prior to day of surgery and patient admission and preparation on the day of surgery, yielded many more comments than the other four stages. The results of the structured questionnaire show that, overall, the healthcare providers report high quality of care provided by themselves (98%) and their surgery centre (96%). With regard to patient safety (i.e. cancellations of surgeries, patient safety problems and serious mistakes), there was a clear difference in perceptions reported by the physicians vs. the nurses and other staff. Nurses and other staff were more likely to report patient safety problems than physicians. The combination of qualitative data from the initial questionnaire and the quantitative data from the structured questionnaire provides a rather complete view of the outpatient surgery staff perceptions of quality and safety of care. This research highlights the importance of getting input from the healthcare providers regarding the quality and safety of care rather than relying only on traditional measures about patient outcomes.  相似文献

We present a simple model to simulate small three-dimensional superconducting constrictions of variable thickness (VTBs) for which the cross-sectional dimensions are of the same order as the length, and both are less than (T). We study the behavior of the modulus of the order parameterf and the supercurrent densityJ s as a function of the various dimensions. We find that the extent to whichf is depressed in the banks depends on the ratio of width to length of the constriction. We show that even for very abrupt geometries,J s is not zero andf does not reach its equilibrium value immediately outside the constriction. On the basis of our results, we propose a more general expression for the effective length valid also when all dimensions are of the same order. The calculated values ofdI c /dT are consistent with experimental data from well-characterized VTBs. We suggest that the discrepancy between the calculated and experimental values ofI c R n may be due to the nonuniformity of the normal current density in the constriction.  相似文献

Normal alkanes show very complicated phase transition kinetics and macroscopic phase equilibrium behavior. This paper focuses on the phase stability and equilibrium of complicated mixtures like n-alkanes and on the enabling global optimization technologies needed to gather problem knowledge. The new ideas contained in this paper include:
(1) novel level set methods for gathering encoded knowledge;
(2) the differential geometry for uncovering pathways to more subtle knowledge;
(3) all supporting non-linearly constrained optimization techniques;
(4) all data handling needed to unravel complex solution structure.
These new ideas are incorporated within the integral path methodology or terrain methods recently developed by Lucia, A., & Yang, F. (2003) [Lucia, A., & Yang F. (2003). Multivariable terrain methods. AIChE Journal 49, 2553] and Lucia, DiMaggio, and Depa (2004) [Lucia, A., DiMaggio, P.A., & Depa, P. (2004). A geometric terrain methodology for global optimization. Journal of Global Optimization 29, 297]. This framework provides global knowledge for understanding solution structure, like the complex solution structure of n-alkanes. In particular, it is shown that knowledge of the Newton and tangent vector fields, Gauss curvature, integral path bifurcation points, and non-differentiable manifolds provides a deterministic way of finding additional solutions, saddle points, and other information that might otherwise go undetected.It is shown that the optimization tools developed in this work provide all knowledge of interest on the appropriate hypothetical single-phase or composite surface (i.e., minima, saddle points, singular points, and integral paths) in phase stability applications. This knowledge can be obtained by solving the phase stability problem exactly once, in a pre-processing step, and used to reliably initialize any multi-phase equilibrium calculation for any feed. This removes the need to repeatedly solve the phase stability problem as the feed composition changes and greatly increases computational efficiency. Numerical examples and geometric illustrations are used to elucidate key ideas and to show how the proposed approach can be used to unravel the complicated phase behavior of n-alkane mixtures.  相似文献
