Distribution of soap in a membrane reactor in the production of fame from waste cooking oil

A continuous‐flow membrane reactor was constructed for the production of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) from waste vegetable oil with high free fatty acid (FFA) content. FAME was produced via base‐catalysed transesterification with methanol at two FFA levels: 4.8 and 10 mass%. The effect of the ceramic membrane pore size on the separation of soap and triglycerides from the FAME in the reactor was investigated. In all cases, the triglyceride was completely retained in the reactor, yielding free and total glycerine contents in the produced FAME significantly below the maximum limits of the ASTM D6751 standard. The soaps produced in the reaction mixture were not completely retained in the reactor and did not affect the FAME production process. © 2012 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering

Plantaricin bacteriocins: As safe alternative antimicrobial peptides in food preservation—A review

Many peptides are excreted by gram-positive (+) and gram-negative (−) bacteria, possessing antimicrobial properties, called bacteriocins. Common bacterial species produce bacteriocins are called lactic acid bacteria. Nowadays, plantaricins are natural antimicrobial peptides produced by Lactobacillus plantarum strains have obtained special attention. The L. plantarum and their bacteriocins have got great importance in different areas as food biopreservatives and/or starters in dairy products, meat products, and fish products also, were used for treating diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria that is, reducing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome disease (IBS) and decreasing the number of colonies of pathogenic bacteria in the wound-burning model in mice. Moreover, plantaricins have got a potent protective role against urinary tract infection (UTI). Although there are many studies on the types of bacteriocins and their purification and uses, such as Nisin and Pediocin, there have been no reports in the literature on the characterizations, production, and purification of plantaricins. The present review aims to describe plantaricins and some of their features and applications in general. Also mentioned are the most common methods of isolation and purification.     

A seamless context-aware architecture for fourth generation wireless networks

The integration of a multitude of wireless networks is expected to lead to the emergence of the fourth generation (4G) of wireless technologies. Under the motivation of increasing the levels of user satisfaction while maintaining seamless connectivity and a satisfactory level of QoS, we design a novel cross-layer architecture that provides context-awareness, smart handoff and mobility control in heterogeneous wireless IP networks. We develop a Transport and Application Layer Architecture for vertical Mobility with Context-awareness (Tramcar). Tramcar presents a new approach to vertical handoff decisions, which is not exclusively based on network characteristics but also on higher level parameters which fall in the application and transport layers. Tramcar is tailored for a variety of different network technologies with different characteristics and has the ability of adapting to changing environment conditions and unpredictable background traffic. Furthermore, Tramcar allows users to identify and prioritize their preferences. Tramcar is a smart and practical system, which is more capable of dealing with 4G challenges. Simulation results demonstrate that Tramcar increases user satisfaction levels and network throughput under rough network conditions and reduces overall handoff latencies.
