One of the challenges in membrane technology is predicting permeability in porous membranes for liquid applications in an easy and inexpensive way. This is the aim of this work. To achieve this objective, several techniques can be considered. In this study, a morphological approach from two‐dimensional scanning electron micrographs is proposed. First, numerical membrane morphological parameters have been determined from micrographs by using the QUANTS tool, which applies a texture recognition process. Second, the obtained data have been fit to the Darcy's and Hagen–Poiseuille models to calculate permeations. The QUANTS results have also been compared with the ones obtained through a mercury porosimeter, which is a classic and well‐known methodology. Each parameter of the Hagen–Poiseuille model has been analyzed. A comparison between experimentally measured permeations and calculated ones has been performed. An even easier approach is proposed to predict flow rate with the only knowledge of membrane surface mean pore size. This method is based on cross‐section pore size interpolation by using function fits from surface mean pore sizes. The obtained results show a reasonable agreement between measured and computed results, making this technique a valid approach for predicting membrane permeability. POLYM. ENG. An alkaline microfluidic fuel cell is demonstrated employing an alkaline version of a formic acid anode and a sodium hypochlorite cathode. Both sodium formate fuel and sodium hypochlorite oxidant are available and stable as highly concentrated solutions, thereby facilitating fuel cell systems with high overall energy density. Sodium hypochlorite is commonly available as hypochlorite bleach. The alkaline anodic half-cell produces carbonate rather than the less-desirable gaseous CO2, while sustaining the rapid kinetics associated with formic acid oxidation in acidic media. Both half-cells provide high current densities at relatively low overpotentials and are free of gaseous products that may otherwise limit microfluidic fuel cell performance. The microfluidic fuel cell takes advantage of a recently developed membraneless architecture with flow-through porous electrodes. Power densities up to 52 mW cm−2 and overall energy conversion efficiencies up to 30% per single pass are demonstrated at room temperature using 1.2 M formate fuel and 0.67 M hypochlorite oxidant. The alkaline formate/hypochlorite fuel and oxidant combination demonstrated here, or either one of its individual half-cells, may also be useful in conventional membrane-based fuel cell designs.  相似文献

The silicon oxynitride glasses take advantage of nitrogen bonding to attain high elastic modulus, increased softening temperatures and viscosities, greater slow crack growth resistance, and modest gains in fracture resistance. Of the oxynitride glasses, the Si–Y–Al-based oxynitride glasses have been most extensively studied and a degree of success has been achieved in understanding how changes in glass composition affect structural parameters and their relationship with properties. More recent studies have focused on the Si–RE–Me oxynitride glasses, where Me is primarily Al or Mg and rare earth (RE) includes most of the lanthanide series elements. These glasses possess a range of elastic, thermal, mechanical, and optical properties, which can be correlated with the strength of the RE bond in terms of the cationic field strength. However, such correlations require knowledge of not only the RE valence state but also its coordination with the anions. Herein, the current state-of-the-art understanding of the properties and structural parameters of oxynitride glasses and their interrelationships are reviewed.  相似文献

Abstract

Crop diversification is one way of improving the profitability of small-scale irrigation schemes. The 25 de Setembro scheme is an ideal site to analyze diversification, as it is influenced by the markets in Maputo and South Africa. This study uses information gathered from observations, discussions with irrigators and an irrigator survey. Results identified seven irrigator types with different crop diversification strategies predominantly influenced by resource constraints. Most irrigators produce traditional crops, although there are opportunities for growing crops that are more profitable. Improved extension services, to identify cropping strategies that better align with market demand, would improve profitability.  相似文献
