A case of cognac adulteration

Summary Linear discriminant analysis of GLC-aromagram data is used to separate several classes of wine distillates, namely cognac, armagnac and brandy. In this paper we demonstrate how this method was used to detect adulteration. The adulteration was confirmed by the presence of ethyl heptanoate and limonene, which are well-known flavour compounds. They were analysed by means of a Purge and Trap headspace technique. Mass spectrometry was used to identify these flavours.

Zusammenfassung Die Linear-Discriminanz-Analyse von GLC-Aromagramm-Daten wird zur Klassifizierung von Weindestillaten wie Cognac, Armagnac und Brandy verwendet. In dieser Arbeit werden mit dieser Methode Verfälschungen nachgewiesen, die durch die Gegenwart der Ethylester der Heptansäure und des Limonen belegt werden konnten. Diese Substanzen wurden mit der Purge- und Trap-Methode erfaßt und massenspektrometrisch identifiziert.

The application of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in clinical pharmacological oncology research

Metal-based anticancer agents are frequently used in the treatment of a wide variety of cancer types. The monitoring of these anticancer agents in biological samples is important to understand their pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and metabolism. In addition, determination of metals originating from anticancer agents is relevant to assess occupational exposure of health care personnel working with these drugs. The high sensitivity of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has resulted in an increased popularity of this technique for the analysis of metal-based anticancer drugs. In addition to the quantitative analysis of the metal of interest in a sample, ICP-MS can be used as an ultrasensitive metal selective detector in combination with speciation techniques such as liquid chromatography. In the current review we provide a systematic survey of publications describing the analysis of platinum- and ruthenium-containing anticancer agents using ICP-MS, focused on the determination of total metal concentrations and on the speciation of metal compounds in biological fluids, DNA- and protein-adducts, and environmental samples. We conclude that ICP-MS is a powerful tool for the quantitative analysis of metal-based anticancer agents from multiple sample sources.     

Guarding against online threats: why entrepreneurs take protective measures

Information technology is becoming increasingly important for entrepreneurs. Protecting their technical infrastructure and stored data is, therefore, also becoming more vital. Nevertheless, research into the safety and security of entrepreneurs in general, and online threats targeted at entrepreneurs in particular, is still limited. This study investigates to what extent self-employed entrepreneurs protect themselves against online threats, and what motivates them to do so. Based on secondary analyses on data collected from 1622 Dutch entrepreneurs, we observe that the majority implement technical and personal coping measures. By adopting protection motivation theory as a theoretical basis for our study, we found that coping appraisal explains the adoption of protective measures. Entrepreneurs are likely to implement protective measures when they believe a measure is effective, when they are capable of using internet technology, when their attitude towards online protection is positive and when they believe they are responsible for their own online security. Although the secondary analysis provides some limitations, this study offers new insights into the usage of protective measures and the motivation for taking them. These insights can help to improve information security campaigns.
