In the present research, nanostructured Pd–Cd alloy electrocatalysts with different compositions were produced using the electrodeposition process. The morphology of the samples was studied by scanning electron microscopy analysis. Also, the elemental composition of the samples was determined by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and elemental mapping tests. Tafel polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods were employed to determine the electrochemical corrosion properties of the synthesized samples in a solution containing 0.5 M sulfuric acid and 0.1 M formic acid. The linear sweep voltammetry, cyclic voltammetry, and chronoamperometry techniques were also employed to evaluate the electrocatalytic activity of prepared samples toward the oxidation of formic acid. In this respect, the influence of some factors such as formic acid and sulfuric acid concentrations and also potential scan rate was investigated. Compared to the pure Pd sample, the Pd–Cd samples were more reactive for the oxidation of formic acid. Besides, the sample with a lower amount of Pd (Pd1·3Cd) demonstrated much higher electrocatalytic activity than the Pd7·1Cd and Pd2·1Cd samples. The observed high mass activity of 15.06 A mg?1Pd for the Pd1·3Cd sample which is 21.1 times higher than Pd/C is an interesting result of this study.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: When the European Space Agency planned the EUROMIR'95 long-duration flight with a European astronaut on board the Russian orbital MIR station, it organized simultaneously a ground simulation, called the Human Behaviour Study, of this manned space mission. The ground simulation was a confinement experiment, and this paper describes the changes in volume-regulating hormones that occurred during and after 20 weeks of confinement. METHODS: In a normobaric diving chamber, 3 subjects were confined for 135 d. Arterial pressure, plasma concentrations of blood volume-regulating hormones (active renin and arginine-vasopressin), and urinary variables (aldosterone, arginine-vasopressin, and metabolites of catecholamines) were measured before, during, and after confinement. RESULTS: Arterial pressure was increased from week 1 until week 15 of confinement, while heart rate was elevated from week 6 until the end of the simulation. Plasma active renin was elevated throughout the confinement (after week 6). Urine volume increased transitively on the first 2 d of confinement. CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained during this long-term confinement experiment have major importance regarding concerns about spaceflight and bed rest data, because we observed hormonal changes during the experiment that normally are assigned to the fluid shift that occurs in weightlessness or in the head-down tilt position (i.e., an increase of renin, an increase of urinary volume during the first two days, and a decreased urinary cyclic guanosine monophosphate.  相似文献

Two bar-press experiments with rats tested the rule that reducing expectation of reward increases the variation from which reward selects. Experiment 1 used a discrete-trial random-interval schedule, with trials signaled by light or sound. One signal always ended with reward; the other signal ended with reward less often. The 2 signals were randomly mixed. Bar-press duration (how long the bar was held down) varied more during the signal with the lower probability of reward. Experiment 2 closely resembled Experiment 1 but used a random-ratio schedule rather than a random-interval schedule. Again, bar-press duration varied more during the signal with the lower probability of reward. The results support the rule--the first well-controlled comparisons to do so. Vibration dampers are the first line of defense against shock and impacts sustained by mechanical and structural systems. Consequently, for decades, new impact damping technologies have been developed and applied in several engineering fields to attenuate undesired vibrations. Linear particle chain (LPC) impact dampers are the latest category of impact dampers being developed for the mitigation of unwanted vibrations in many systems. However, the challenges associated with prototyping such devices made their application in practical systems very limited. This paper proposes five innovative designs for the LPC impact dampers satisfying a wide range of industry needs in terms of efficiency, cost, and sustainability. The proposed designs are fabricated and tested under the same conditions to assess their efficiency in attenuating the vibration of a simple structure. Each design showed consistent behavior, but some designs outperformed others depending on the geometry, physical characteristics, and type of structure. The detailed design, experimental study, and time response comparisons are presented here to provide an initial study towards the development of practical sustainable LPC vibration dampers for real engineering applications.  相似文献

Gas holdup and gas–liquid mass transfer coefficient were considered in an external airlift reactor. Air was sparged through some aliphatic alcohols (methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, and n-butanol) with different concentrations (0–1%, v/v). It was observed that gas holdup and mass transfer coefficient increased with increasing the number of carbons in alcohols. Furthermore, an increment in alcohols concentration increased gas holdup and mass transfer coefficient. The same behavior was observed in external and internal loop airlift reactors although gas holdup and mass transfer coefficient values were less than those of internal airlift reactor. According to the experiments, two correlations for gas holdup and mass transfer were developed.  相似文献

Eucalyptol (Euc) is a natural monoterpene with insecticide effects. Being highly volatile and sensitive to ambient conditions, its encapsulation would enlarge its application. Euc‐loaded conventional liposomes (CL), cyclodextrin/drug inclusion complex, and drug‐in‐cyclodextrin‐in‐liposomes (DCL) are prepared to protect Euc from degradation, reduce its evaporation, and provide its controlled release. The liposomal suspension is freeze‐dried using hydroxypropyl‐β‐cyclodextrin (HP‐β‐CD) as cryoprotectant. The liposomes are characterized before and after freeze‐drying. The effect of Euc on the fluidity of liposomal membrane is also examined. A release study of Euc from delivery systems, in powder and reconstituted forms, is performed by multiple head extraction at 60 °C after 6 months of storage at 4 °C. CL and DCL suspensions are homogeneous, show nanometric vesicles size, spherical shape, and negative surface charge before and after freeze‐drying. Moreover, HP‐β‐CD does not affect the fluidity of liposomes. CL formulations present a weak encapsulation for Euc. The loading capacity of eucalyptol in DCL is 38 times higher than that in CL formulation. In addition, freeze‐dried DCL and HP‐β‐CD/Euc inclusion complex show a higher retention of eucalyptol than CL delivery system. Both carrier systems HP‐β‐CD/Euc and Euc‐loaded DCL decrease Euc evaporation and improve its retention. Practical Applications: Eucalyptol is a natural insecticide. It is highly volatile and poorly soluble in water. To enlarge its application, its encapsulation in three delivery systems (conventional liposomes, cyclodextrin/drug inclusion complex, combined system composed of cyclodextrin inclusion complex and liposome) is studied. In this paper it is proved that cyclodextrin/eucalyptol inclusion complex and eucalyptol‐in‐cyclodextrin‐in‐liposome are effective delivery systems for encalyptol encapsulation, retention, and release.  相似文献

A number of multi-billion dollar businesses (for example Dell, Amazon, Expedia and Google) have been built on top of Web portals that provide customers with a differentiating experience. How do these portals achieve this, and what lessons can BT learn? In this paper we describe technology that supports the development of portals which extend and improve the customer’s experience of interacting with a company by breaking away from the direct manipulation metaphor. A software program has been implemented to meet the requirements of an acknowledge enabled and Handshake protocol for reading, transmitting and saving of data from a SPEX Dàtamate controller to a VAX computer at real time scanning. The logic of the program can easily be applied to similar analytical instrumentation and computers. This study reports on the formulation of doxycycline HCL in an ion activated in situ gelling delivery system and its implications for the treatment of periodontal disease. The system is based on the use of alginate as the gelling agent and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) as a viscosity enhancing agent. The ion activated gelling mechanism in this system is based on the concept of interaction with the divalent calcium ions present in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF). The gelling capacity of the prepared formulations was assessed visually and by investigating their rheological behavior upon mixing with human blood serum since it has the same composition as the GCF. The rheological behavior of all formulations was not affected by incorporation of the drug. In vitro release studies showed that the alginate/HPMC mixture, upon gelling after mixing with serum, can sustain the release of doxycycline HCL for an extended period of time which was more than 12 days. These results indicated that this system can be used as an in situ gelling local delivery system for the treatment of periodontal disease. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This communication reports new results on the enthalpy of formation of pseudo-amorphous ceramic compounds constituted from silicon, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen (SiCNO), made from the polymer route. Again, like the SiCO materials, although with one exception, the enthalpy of formation from crystalline components (SiO2 cristobalite, β-Si3N4, SiC, and excess C) is negative. Some of the alloyed oxygen–nitrogen compositions yield enthalpies that are much more negative (∼100 kJ/g·atom) in comparison with compositions that contain mainly oxygen or nitrogen (∼20 kJ/g·atom). The exception, having a N/O ratio near 2, has a positive value for the enthalpy. This may reflect the presence of nanoclusters of stoichiometric Si2N2O instead of the pseudo-amorphous nanodomain structure seen for the other samples.  相似文献
