Perinatal hypoxia is a major cause of infant brain damage, lifelong neurological disability, and infant mortality. N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) is a powerful antioxidant that acts directly as a scavenger of free radicals. We hypothesized that maternal-antenatal and offspring-postnatal NAC can protect offspring brains from hypoxic brain damage.Sixty six newborn rats were randomized into four study groups. Group 1: Control (CON) received no hypoxic intervention. Group 2: Hypoxia (HYP)-received hypoxia protocol. Group 3: Hypoxia-NAC (HYP-NAC). received hypoxia protocol and treated with NAC following each hypoxia episode. Group 4: NAC Hypoxia (NAC-HYP) treated with NAC during pregnancy, pups subject to hypoxia protocol. Each group was evaluated for: neurological function (Righting reflex), serum proinflammatory IL-6 protein levels (ELISA), brain protein levels: NF-κB p65, neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), TNF-α, and IL-6 (Western blot) and neuronal apoptosis (histology evaluation with TUNEL stain). Hypoxia significantly increased pups brain protein levels compared to controls. NAC administration to dams or offspring demonstrated lower brain NF-κB p65, nNOS, TNF-α and IL-6 protein levels compared to hypoxia alone. Hypoxia significantly increased brain apoptosis as evidenced by higher grade of brain TUNEL reaction. NAC administration to dams or offspring significantly reduce this effect. Hypoxia induced acute sensorimotor dysfunction. NAC treatment to dams significantly attenuated hypoxia-induced acute sensorimotor dysfunction. Prophylactic NAC treatment of dams during pregnancy confers long-term protection to offspring with hypoxia associated brain injury, measured by several pathways of injury and correlated markers with pathology and behavior. This implies we may consider prophylactic NAC treatment for patients at risk for hypoxia during labor.  相似文献

Weakly-acyclic games—a superclass of potential games—capture distributed environments where simple, globally-asynchronous interactions between strategic agents are guaranteed to converge to an equilibrium. We explore the class of routing games introduced in Fabrikant and Papadimitriou (The Complexity of Game Dynamics: BGP Oscillations, Sink Equilibria, and Beyond, pp. 844–853, 2008) and in Levin et al. (Interdomain Routing and Games, pp. 57–66, 2008), which models important aspects of routing on the Internet. We show that, in interesting contexts, such routing games are weakly acyclic and, moreover, that pure Nash equilibria in such games can be found in a computationally efficient manner.  相似文献

The authors examined the relationship between cognition and gait velocity, performed with and without interference, in elderly participants. Neuropsychological test scores from 186 cognitively normal elders were submitted to factor analysis that yielded 3 factors: Verbal IQ, Speed/Executive Attention, and Memory. Regression analyses revealed that these factors were significant predictors of variance in gait velocity, but the relationship varied as a function of task condition. All 3 factors predicted gait velocity without interference. However, the Speed/Executive Attention and Memory factors but not Verbal IQ predicted gait velocity in the interference condition. These findings suggest that gait velocity and cognitive function may have both shared and independent brain substrates. Milk indigested glycans hamper infections by blocking pathogen adhesion to babies’ cells via lectins (sugar-binding proteins). This study describes usage of five pathogenic bacterial lectins and two plant lectins for analyses of alpaca, buffalo, camel, cow, dog, fallow deer, giraffe, goat, horse, human, rabbit, and sheep milks, and also commercial human and cow milk lactoferrins. The lectins used differentially reacted with the 12 milks – most strongly with humans’ ones. Most of them (excluding Pseudomonas aeruginosa galactophilic PA-IL) were also sensitive to the human and cow lactoferrins. The fucophilic bacterial lectins were most sensitive to human lactoferrin, while the mannophilic ones – to the cow’s. The actual function of bacterial lectins in pathogen adhesion and their non-glycosylated structures (evading non-specific interactions) are advantageous for such studies. This study shows the efficiency of the bacterial lectins for milk analyses: differentiating between the diverse milks, estimating their anti-infection potentials, and probing their active glycans.  相似文献

We present a fast algorithm for global rigid symmetry detection with approximation guarantees. The algorithm is guaranteed to find the best approximate symmetry of a given shape, to within a user‐specified threshold, with very high probability. Our method uses a carefully designed sampling of the transformation space, where each transformation is efficiently evaluated using a sublinear algorithm. We prove that the density of the sampling depends on the total variation of the shape, allowing us to derive formal bounds on the algorithm's complexity and approximation quality. We further investigate different volumetric shape representations (in the form of truncated distance transforms), and in such a way control the total variation of the shape and hence the sampling density and the runtime of the algorithm. A comprehensive set of experiments assesses the proposed method, including an evaluation on the eight categories of the COSEG data set. This is the first large‐scale evaluation of any symmetry detection technique that we are aware of.  相似文献

This study examined the relation of dual-task performance to individual differences on neuropsychological tests. Neuropsychological test scores from 16 young and 16 older participants were simultaneously submitted to a factor analysis that yielded 2 factors (Attention/Executive and Memory) that differed by age and 2 (Motor Speed and Cognitive Status) that did not. Regression analyses revealed that these factors were significant predictors of performance on a delayed visual recognition task, but the relationship varied as a function of task condition. The Memory and Motor Speed factors were the strongest predictors of single-task performance, but the Attention/Executive factor was the most important predictor of dual-task performance. The paper presents the design and characterization of a low noise amplifier (LNA) in a 0.18 μm CMOS process with a novel micromachined integrated stacked inductor. The inductor is released from the silicon substrate by a low-cost CMOS compatible dry front-side micromachining process that enables higher inductor quality factor and self-resonance frequency. The post-processed micromachined inductor is used in the matching network of a single stage cascode 4 GHz LNA to improve its RF performance. This study compares performance of the fabricated LNA prior to and after post-processing of the inductor. The measurement results show a 0.5 dB improvement in the minimum noise figure and a 1 dB increase in gain, while good input matching is maintained. These results show that the novel low-cost CMOS compatible front-side dry micromachining process reported here significantly improves performance and is very promising for System-On-Chip (SOC) applications.  相似文献

We created a method for three-dimensional (3-D) registration of medical images (e.g., magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography) to images of physical tissue sections or to other medical images and evaluated its accuracy. Our method proved valuable for evaluation of animal model experiments on interventional-MRI guided thermal ablation and on a new localized drug delivery system. The method computes an optimum set of rigid body registration parameters by minimization of the Euclidean distances between automatically chosen correspondence points, along manually selected fiducial needle paths, and optional point landmarks, using the iterative closest point algorithm. For numerically simulated experiments, using two needle paths over a range of needle orientations, mean voxel displacement errors depended mostly on needle localization error when the angle between needles was at least 20 degrees. For parameters typical of our in vivo experiments, the mean voxel displacement error was < 0.35 mm. In addition, we determined that the distance objective function was a useful diagnostic for predicting registration quality. To evaluate the registration quality of physical specimens, we computed the misregistration for a needle not considered during the optimization procedure. We registered an ex vivo sheep brain MR volume with another MR volume and tissue section photographs, using various combinations of needle and point landmarks. Mean registration error was always < or = 0.54 mm for MR-to-MR registrations and < or = 0.52 mm for MR to tissue section registrations. We also applied the method to correlate MR volumes of radio-frequency induced thermal ablation lesions with actual tissue destruction. In this case, in vivo rabbit thigh volumes were registered to photographs of ex vivo tissue sections using two needle paths. Mean registration errors were between 0.7 and 1.36 mm over all rabbits, the largest error less than two MR voxel widths. We conclude that our method provides sufficient spatial correspondence to facilitate comparison of 3-D image data with data from gross pathology tissue sections and histology.  相似文献

Uniplanar compact electromagnetic bandgap (UC-EBG) substrate has been proven to be an effective measure to reduce surface wave excitation in printed antenna geometries. This paper investigates the performance of a microstrip antenna phased array embedded in an UC-EBG substrate. The results show a reduction in mutual coupling between elements and provide a possible solution to the "blind spots" problem in phased array applications with printed elements. A novel and efficient UC-EBG array configuration is proposed. A probe fed patch antenna phased array of 7/spl times/5 elements on a high dielectric constant substrate was designed, built and tested. Simulation and measurement results show improvement in the active return loss and active pattern of the array center element. The tradeoffs used to obtain optimum performance are discussed.  相似文献
