Consistent modeling of capacitances and transit times of GaAs-based HBTs

This paper investigates how time delays and capacitances observed under small-signal conditions can be consistently accounted for in heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) large-signal models. The approach starts at the circuit level by mapping the large-signal equivalent circuit (which consists of charge and current sources) to the well-known small-signal circuit (which consists of capacitances, transit-time, and resistances). It is shown that and how bias dependent charge sources at either pn-junction impact transit-time, base-collector capacitance, and their mutual dependence. It is demonstrated for the example of a GaAs-based HBT that the interrelation of the elements is observed in measurements as predicted. The results of the investigation enhance understanding of HBT model characteristics and provide a criterion to check model consistency.     

Analysis of the Survivability of GaN Low-Noise Amplifiers

This paper presents a detailed analysis of the stressing mechanisms for highly rugged low-noise GaN monolithic-microwave integrated-circuit amplifiers operated at extremely high input powers. As an example, a low-noise amplifier (LNA) operating in the 3-7-GHz frequency band is used. A noise figure (NF) below 2.3 dB is measured from 3.5 to 7 GHz with NF<1.8 dB between 5-7 GHz. This device survived 33 dBm of available RF input power for 16 h without any change in low-noise performance. The stress mechanisms at high input powers are identified by systematic measurements of an LNA and a single high electron-mobility transistor in the frequency and time domains. It is shown that the gate dc current, which occurs due to self-biasing, is the most critical factor regarding survivability. A series resistance in the gate dc feed can reduce this gate current by feedback, and may be used to improve LNA ruggedness     

Fabrication and selective surface modification of 3-dimensionally textured biomedical polymers from etched silicon substrates

A new method is described for producing biomedically relevant polymers with precisely defined micron scale surface texture in the x, y, and z planes. Patterned Si templates were fabricated using photolithography to create a relief pattern in photoresist with lateral dimensions as small as 1 micron. Electroless Ni was selectively deposited in the trenches of the patterned substrate. The Ni served as a resilient mask for transferring the patterns onto the Si substrate to depths of up to 8.5 microns by anisotropic reactive ion etching with a fluorine-based plasma. The 3-dimensional (3-D) textured silicon substrates were used as robust, reusable molds for pattern transfer onto poly (dimethyl siloxane), low density poly (ethylene), poly (L-lactide), and poly (glycolide) by either casting or injection molding. The fidelity of the pattern transfer from the silicon substrates to the polymers was 90 to 95% in all three planes for all polymers for more than 60 transfers from a single wafer, as determined by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Further, the 3-D textured polymers were selectively modified to coat proteins either in the trenches or on the mesas by capillary modification or selective coating techniques. These selectively patterned 3-D polymer substrates may be useful for a variety of biomaterial applications.

p53 tumour suppressor gene mutations in benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer

OBJECTIVE: Seminal vesicle cysts combined with ipsilateral renal agenesis represent a rare urological anomaly. We searched the literature to review the clinical presentation, diagnosis and therapeutic treatment options of this anomaly. METHODS: A pooled analysis was performed of 52 cases of seminal vesicle cysts combined with ipsilateral renal agenesis, including our own observation. The evaluation included: patient age at diagnosis, race, laterality (R/L), presence of ureteral remnant in the cyst, presenting symptoms, diagnostic examinations, treatment and outcome. RESULTS: The mean age at diagnosis was 30.2 years. The majority presented in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th decade of their lives. Only 2 patients (4%) were of African origin, all others were Caucasians. The distribution R:L was 2:1. Ureteral remnants were present in 14 patients (27%). The most common symptoms were: dysuria (37%), frequency (33%), perineal pain (29%), epididymitis (27%), pain following ejaculation (21%) and scrotal pain (13%). Infertility was found in 9 patients (17%). The cyst was palpable by digital rectal examination in 79%. All patients underwent intravenous urography, and 88% underwent cystoscopy. Other frequently performed investigations are: ultrasonography (27%), CT scanning (27%), vasovesiculography (46%) and urethrocystography (23%). The final treatment was open surgery in 74%, aspiration in 6%, transurethral deroofing of the cyst in 6% and spontaneous rupture in 4%. In 6% no treatment was given and in 4% the treatment is unknown. All patients were free of symptoms after open exploration. The success rates after transurethral deroofing and aspiration were 75 and 30% respectively. CONCLUSION: Seminal vesicle cysts combined with ipsilateral renal agenesis are a rare urological anomaly, occurring in men in the 2nd to 4th decade of their life. They present with symptoms of bladder irritation and obstruction and with pain in the perineum and scrotum. Epididymitis is frequently found. The diagnostic work-up consists of a digital rectal examination, transrectal and abdominal ultrasonography, CT scan and a cystoscopy. Open surgery and transurethral deroofing of the cyst give excellent results (100 and 75% cure respectively). Aspiration of the cyst should only be used for diagnostic purposes.     

Functional Characterisation of Three Glycine N-Acyltransferase Variants and the Effect on Glycine Conjugation to Benzoyl–CoA

The glycine conjugation pathway in humans is involved in the metabolism of natural substrates and the detoxification of xenobiotics. The interactions between the various substrates in this pathway and their competition for the pathway enzymes are currently unknown. The pathway consists of a mitochondrial xenobiotic/medium-chain fatty acid: coenzyme A (CoA) ligase (ACSM2B) and glycine N-acyltransferase (GLYAT). The catalytic mechanism and substrate specificity of both of these enzymes have not been thoroughly characterised. In this study, the level of evolutionary conservation of GLYAT missense variants and haplotypes were analysed. From these data, haplotype variants were selected (156Asn > Ser, [17Ser > Thr,156Asn > Ser] and [156Asn > Ser,199Arg > Cys]) in order to characterise the kinetic mechanism of the enzyme over a wide range of substrate concentrations. The 156Asn > Ser haplotype has the highest frequency and the highest relative enzyme activity in all populations studied, and hence was used as the reference in this study. Cooperative substrate binding was observed, and the kinetic data were fitted to a two-substrate Hill equation. The coding region of the GLYAT gene was found to be highly conserved and the rare 156Asn > Ser,199Arg > Cys variant negatively affected the relative enzyme activity. Even though the 156Asn > Ser,199Arg > Cys variant had a higher affinity for benzoyl-CoA (s_0.5,benz = 61.2 µM), k_cat was reduced to 9.8% of the most abundant haplotype 156Asn > Ser (s_0.5,benz = 96.6 µM), while the activity of 17Ser > Thr,156Asn > Ser (s_0.5,benz = 118 µM) was 73% of 156Asn > Ser. The in vitro kinetic analyses of the effect of the 156Asn > Ser,199Arg > Cys variant on human GLYAT enzyme activity indicated that individuals with this haplotype might have a decreased ability to metabolise benzoate when compared to individuals with the 156Asn > Ser variant. Furthermore, the accumulation of acyl-CoA intermediates can inhibit ACSM2B leading to a reduction in mitochondrial energy production.     

Driving as a human: a track learning based adaptable architecture for a car racing controller

We present the evolution and current state of the Mr. Racer car racing controller that excelled at the corresponding TORCS competitions of the last years. Although several heuristics and black-box optimization methods are employed, the basic idea of the controller architecture has been to take over many of the mechanisms human racing drivers apply. They learn the track geometry, plan ahead, and wherever necessary, adapt their plans to the current circumstances quickly. Mr. Racer consists of several modules that have partly been adapted and optimized separately, where the final tuning is usually done with respect to a certain racing track during the warmup phase of the TORCS competitions. We also undertake an experimental evaluation that investigates how the controller profits from adding some of the modules to a basic configuration and which modules are most important for reaching the best possible performance.     

Smoke suppressants for plasticized poly(vinyl chloride)

Addition of plasticizers to poly(vinyl chloride) generally increases its flammability and frequently increases smoke production during its burning. Flame retardants added to plasticized PVC can reduce flammability, but increase smoke production. This study shows that proper choice of combined use of other polymers, phosphate plasticizers, fillers and other flame retardants, produces measured synergistic improvements in flame retardance and smoke suppression which could benefit applications such as PVC wire and cable insulation.
