An alcohol expectancy-challenge prevention program for at risk college women.

Alcohol expectancy-challenge programs are effective in changing expectancies and reducing drinking in college men (J. Darker & M. S. Goldman. 1993. 1998); however, recent evidence suggests this protocol might not be effective for women (M. E. Dunn, C. Lau, & I. Y. Cruz, 2000). This study was designed to reevaluate the effectiveness of a social/sexual expectancy-challenge intervention in college women reporting moderate to heavy alcohol use. Forty-six undergraduate women were randomly assigned to the prevention or control condition. Participants reported alcohol expectancies at pre- and posttest and monitored their drinking patterns daily for 6 weeks. The program was effective in changing some expectancies but did not reduce drinking. Ternary iron alloys for permanent magnetic materials

Iron-based rare-earth ternary alloys with a high energy product came into prominence recently as permanent magnetic materials. Also, a large number of iron-based ternary phase diagrams were critically evaluated and published recently as monographs under the auspices of the International Programme for Alloy Phase Diagram Data. This review presents a brief comparison of the data on crystal structures of ternary compounds and the corresponding phase diagrams for a number of ternary iron rare-earth (RE) X series: B-Fe-RE, C-Fe-RE, Fe-N-RE, Al-Fe-RE, Co-Fe-RE, Fe-Ni-RE, and Fe-RE(1)-RE(2). It is hoped that this exercise will aid in pinpointing discrepancies and planning future investigations on ternary compounds and phase equilibria in unexplored systems.     

Children's use of the common ground in interpreting ambiguous referential utterances.

Common ground is contextual information shared by a listener and speaker that enables the listener to convert an ambiguous utterance to an informative communication. Four experiments examined young children's understanding of the common ground in interpreting ambiguous referential utterances. Kindergarten and 2nd-grade children and college students were read short vignettes containing statement, joint activity, status common ground, and an ambiguous or informative utterance about a display of 4–6 object drawings. The subjects were asked (a) whether the listener knew which object to pick (Experiment 1), (b) to pick an object themselves or choose "none" (Experiment 2), (c) the source of the listener's knowledge in the context or utterance (Experiment 3), and (d) whether a designated object was the "right one," the one the speaker "meant," or the one the speaker "could have meant" (Experiment 4). Even the kindergarten children used statement information effectively in interpreting ambiguous utterances, and all groups had difficulty using status information. Perceptual organization in schizophrenia: The processing of symmetrical configurations.

The hypothesis that the perceptual organization dysfunction of patients with poor premorbid schizophrenia is due to a deficit in global visual sensory store processing was tested by assessing their ability to process symmetrical configurations that develop early and have strong prepotent structures. Two same–different judgment tasks in which performance varies as a function of the symmetrical organization and task demands were administered to participants with good and poor premorbid schizophrenia, those with mood disorders, and normal controls. Like the other groups, poor premorbid schizophrenics' latency and error response patterns closely paralleled the a priori model of adequate processing. The results support their competence in perceptually processing symmetrical configurations and disconfirm the hypothesis that their input deficiencies represent a general deficiency in all forms of perceptual organization. Role of Chain Entanglements in the Electrospinning of Wheat Protein-Poly(Vinyl Alcohol) Blends

The aim of this investigation was to determine if the rapid solvent removal evaporation that occurs during electrospinning enabled the gluten protein and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) chains to remain at least partially entangled in the final product. Natural and synthetic biopolymer blends are known to phase separate in the melt. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to test our hypothesis, which we achieved by systematically comparing the thermal profiles of the nonwoven fibrous sheets comprising: 1) 100% commercial wheat gluten, 2) 100% PVOH, and 3) the (75/25) wheat gluten/PVOH blend. The DSC scans of the two PVOH-containing, nonwoven fibrous sheets exhibited differences in the characteristics and positions of the melting peaks (T_m) of the PVOH crystalline phase, while the DSC scans of the nonwoven fibrous sheets comprising either 100% commercial wheat gluten or the wheat gluten/PVOH blend yielded neither a measurable glass transition temperature (T_g) nor a T_m. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to compare the elemental compositions of the individual fibers with the compositions of the spherical domains found in the nonwoven fibrous mats. These scans revealed that the mineral matter found in commercial wheat gluten (roughly 1% by weight) had phase-separated from the bulk gluten protein as a result of electrospinning.     

What Is Perseverated in Schizophrenia? Evidence of Abnormal Response Plasticity in the Saccadic System.

Although perseveration is sometimes attributed to defective set switching, the authors have recently shown that set-switching is normal in schizophrenia. In this article, the authors tested for persistent states of the saccadic response system, rather than set perseveration. Schizophrenic and healthy subjects performed antisaccades and prosaccades. The authors analyzed for 3 carry-over effects. First, whereas the latency of the current saccade correlated with that of the prior saccade in both groups, the correlations under mixed-task conditions declined in healthy but not in schizophrenic subjects. Second, antisaccades in penultimate trials delayed upcoming saccades in schizophrenic but not in healthy subjects. Third, schizophrenic subjects were more likely to erroneously perseverate the direction of a prior antisaccade but not a prior prosaccade. The authors concluded that, in schizophrenia, the effects of correct antisaccades are persistent not weak. Saccades in schizophrenia are characterized by perseveration of antisaccade-induced changes in the saccadic response system rather than failures to switch task set. High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Diodic Array Detector,Fungistatic, and Anti-Morphogenical Analysis of Extracts from Psidium brownianum Mart. ex DC. Against Yeasts of the Genus Candida

We assessed extracts from Psidium brownianum for antifungal activity and identified the phenolic phytocompounds. Minimum inhibitory concentration was determined by microdilution and IC₅₀ was calculated. The minimun fungicidal concentration and the morphology of Candida were evaluated. Extracts analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography demonstrated flavonoids and phenolic acids. The minimum inhibitory concentration was 8192 µg/mL and the IC₅₀ varied between 1056 and 5128 µg/mL. Extracts showed fungistatic effect and altered the dimorphism of the strains, being the better result observed using the decoction, that affected the fungal dimorphism of the strain CA ATCC40006 at 4096 µg/mL.
