Effect of dopants on the low temperature microwave dielectric properties of Ba(Zn1/3Ta2/3)O3 ceramics

Ba(Zn_1/3Ta_2/3)O₃ has been prepared with different dopants that gave best microwave dielectric properties at room temperature. Effects of different dopants on the low temperature microwave dielectric properties of BZT were investigated. With decrease in temperature, loss tangent was found to decrease marginally and then increase at temperatures lower than 100 K. Increase in loss factor at lower temperatures were found to be less for dopants with smaller ionic radii. Dielectric constant was found to be almost independent of temperature. Temperature coefficient of resonant frequency slowly decreased from a positive value to negative value when temperature was lowered. Temperature at which τ_f becomes zero was found to vary for different dopants. There is a temperature stable region for tanδ, ɛ_r and τ_f which varies for different dopants.     

Ionic liquid mediated nano-composite polymer gel electrolyte for rechargeable battery application

ABSTRACT

Nano-composite polymer gel electrolytes (NPGEs) based on polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) PVdF-HFP, ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3- methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide BMIMTFSI, Li-salt along with the addition of SiO₂ nanoparticles have been synthesized and characterized by various techniques. Prepared NPGEs show high room temperature ionic conductivity (~10^?3 S/cm) and have a wide electrochemical window (ECW) (~3.3–3.5 V). The galvanostatic charge/discharge profile was studied by sandwiching best performing NPGEs between a LiFePO₄ cathode and lithium metal anode. The specific discharge capacity of the cell (Li/NPGE/LiFePO₄) room temperature at 0.1C rate is found to be 138 mAh/g.     

Automated analysis of images in documents for intelligent document search

Authors use images to present a wide variety of important information in documents. For example, two-dimensional (2-D) plots display important data in scientific publications. Often, end-users seek to extract this data and convert it into a machine-processible form so that the data can be analyzed automatically or compared with other existing data. Existing document data extraction tools are semi-automatic and require users to provide metadata and interactively extract the data. In this paper, we describe a system that extracts data from documents fully automatically, completely eliminating the need for human intervention. The system uses a supervised learning-based algorithm to classify figures in digital documents into five classes: photographs, 2-D plots, 3-D plots, diagrams, and others. Then, an integrated algorithm is used to extract numerical data from data points and lines in the 2-D plot images along with the axes and their labels, the data symbols in the figure’s legend and their associated labels. We demonstrate that the proposed system and its component algorithms are effective via an empirical evaluation. Our data extraction system has the potential to be a vital component in high volume digital libraries.

Femtocells are destined to transform the way mobile operators build their cellular networks and grow their coverage and capacity. Femtocells are small base stations operating in the licensed cellular bands. They are so small and inexpensive, and transmit at such low power, that they are meant to be placed in individual homes and backhauled onto the operator?s network via conventional digital subscriber line (DSL) or cable broadband access (or, when available, fiber).

Momentum is building rapidly around femtocells, as several operators worldwide have commercially launched 3G femtocells. This will further accelerate during the course of 2010, with many more operators expected to deploy. As explained in the first part of this series, which appeared in the September 2009 issue of IEEE Communications Magazine, femtocells are small, inexpensive base stations operating in the licensed cellular bands; they are meant to be placed in individual homes or businesses, and backhauled onto the operator's network via wireline broadband access.     

Electrical,mechanical, structural,and thermal behaviors of polymeric gel electrolyte membranes of poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) with the ionic liquid 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate plus lithium tetrafluoroborate

Polymeric gel electrolyte membranes based on the polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) [P(VdF–HFP)] with different weight percentages of the ionic liquid (IL) 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate plus 0.3M lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF₄) salt were prepared and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, complex impedance spectroscopy, pulse echo techniques, and Vickers hardness (H) testing. After the incorporation of the IL plus the salt solution in the P(VdF–HFP) polymer, the melting temperature, glass‐transition temperature (T_g), degree of crystallinity, thermal stability, elastic modulus (E), and hardness (H) gradually decreased with increasing content of the IL–salt solution as a result of complexation between the P(VdF–HFP) and IL. This was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. A part of the IL and LiBF₄ were found to remain uncomplexed as well. The ionic conductivity (σ) of the polymeric gel membranes was found to increase with increasing concentration of the IL–salt solution. The temperature‐dependent σs of these polymeric gel membranes followed an Arrhenius‐type thermally activated behavior. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132, 41456.     

Gastric pneumatosis associated with preduodenal portal vein, duodenal atresia, and asplenia

An 8-day-old newborn presented with non-bilious vomiting, upper abdominal fullness, and failure to pass meconium. Plain radiographs revealed gastric pneumatosis (GP). At operation, he was found to have a non-obstructive preduodenal portal vein, preampullary duodenal atresia, asplenia, and malrotation. The baby was treated by duodeno-duodenostomy without mobilizing the portal vein and correction of the malrotation according to Ladd's procedure. He made an uneventful recovery and the GP resolved spontaneously. The malformative process was believed to have occurred at or soon after the 5th week of gestation, and the GP probably resulted from intramural air tracking through mucosal tears caused by high intragastric pressure.     

A large solid-angle array for heavy ions from APEX

A large solid-angle array of Low Pressure Multi-Wire Proportional Counters (LPMWPCs) has been constructed as part of the ATLAS Positron Experiment (APEX). Eight three-element trapezoidal counters span 360° in φ and 20–68° in laboratory θ. Angle sensitivity in θ is provided by a transmission-line delay cathode, while the 24-fold segmentation provides angle sensitivity in φ. Details are given on the design of the counters and associated hardware. Performance of the counters is described, based on tests with scattered heavy ions ranging from ⁵⁸Ni to ²³⁸U.
