Birds' use of landmarks to identify spatial locations was examined. Black-capped chickadees (Parus atricapillus) and pigeons (Columba livia) searched for hidden food on a 120-cm–2 tray. In each task the target was near an edge with a nearby landmark. On occasional unrewarded tests the landmark was either left in its usual position, shifted parallel to the edge, shifted perpendicular to the edge, or shifted diagonally. On diagonal landmark shifts the birds shifted their searching more in the parallel direction than in the perpendicular, which violates the predictions of the vector sum model (K. Cheng, 1989). In some cases the birds maintained their searching at a constant perpendicular distance under all landmark shifts. This suggests that perpendicular distance to an edge forms an element in determining where to search on the basis of landmarks. The effect of 17 beta-estradiol (E2) on the response of dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT) to acute lithium in the brains of ovariectomized rats was investigated. An E2 injection (100 ng/s.c.) to ovariectomized rats did not change striatal DA levels, whereas the levels of its metabolites dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) and homovanillic acid (HVA), increased 30 min later; concentrations of 5-HT and its metabolite, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), also remained unchanged. In the frontal cortex, DA, 5-HT, HVA and 5-HIAA levels remained unchanged after the E2 injection, whereas DOPAC levels and DOPAC/DA and HVA/DA ratios increased 30 min later. Injection of LiCl (10 mEq) decreased striatal DA levels, increased DOPAC levels and slightly decreased HVA levels; by contrast, frontal cortex DA and HVA levels increased but DOPAC levels were unchanged. A biphasic response of striatal 5-HT levels occurred, increasing shortly after injection of LiCl, followed by a decrease; 5-HIAA levels, however, increased. In the frontal cortex, injection of rats with LiCl led to a gradual increase in 5-HT levels, whereas 5-HIAA concentrations decreased. In the presence of E2, LiCl effected a greater decrease in striatal DA than injection of LiCl alone, advanced the DOPAC peak by 30 min and increased HVA levels; E2 had less effect on the 5-HT response to LiCl, except the decreases in 5-HT and 5-HIAA at 60 min were greater. Furthermore, in the striatum, the increased DA turnover caused by LiCl, estimated by the DOPAC/DA and HVA/DA ratios, was advanced in rats treated with E2. In the presence of E2, LiCl slightly increased frontal cortex DA, DOPAC and HVA levels compared with treatment with LiCl alone, whereas DOPAC levels decreased in rats treated with LiCl + E2 compared with levels in E2-treated rats. Generally, higher levels of 5-HT and 5-HIAA were measured in the frontal cortices of rats treated with LiCl + Ex compared with rats injected with LiCl. These results indicate that E2 potentiates the acute effect of lithium on striatal and frontal cortex DA and 5-HT levels and metabolism, suggesting a role of the hormonal state on this drug response.  相似文献

Candida albicans (CA) infections have been associated with psoriasis onset or disease flares. However, the integrated immune response against this fungus is still poorly characterized in psoriasis. We studied specific immunoglobulins in plasma and the CA response in cocultures of circulating memory CD45RA cutaneous lymphocyte antigen (CLA)+/− T cell with autologous epidermal cells from plaque and guttate psoriasis patients (cohort 1, n = 52), and also healthy individuals (n = 17). A complete proteomic profile was also evaluated in plaque psoriasis patients (cohort 2, n = 114) regarding their anti-CA IgA levels. Increased anti-CA IgA and IgG levels are present in the plasma from plaque but not guttate psoriasis compared to healthy controls. CA cellular response is confined to CLA+ T cells and is primarily Th17. The levels of anti-CA IgA are directly associated with CLA+ Th17 response in plaque psoriasis. Proteomic analysis revealed distinct profiles in psoriasis patients with high anti-CA IgA. C-C motif chemokine ligand 18, chitinase-3-like protein 1 and azurocidin were significantly elevated in the plasma from plaque psoriasis patients with high anti-CA levels and severe disease. Our results indicate a mechanism by which Candida albicans exposure can trigger a clinically relevant IL-17 response in psoriasis. Assessing anti-CA IgA levels may be useful in order to evaluate chronic psoriasis patients.  相似文献

Since the use of network-based storage as a cloud computing service [Storage as a Service (StaaS)] becomes ubiquitous, users who store data in the cloud are exposed to risk and potentially severe consequences. Therefore, individuals should carefully consider security and privacy issues when using StaaS. Drawing upon the principle of self-preservation and the theory of protection motivation, this study develops a research model explaining the mechanisms leading to the development of a protection strategy for individuals’ safe use of StaaS and empirically tests the proposed model. The results show that the natural propensity to trust, an individual trait, influences an individual’s need for privacy. This, in turn, along with perception of privacy risk, significantly affects individuals’ perception of the need to protect themselves. Three coping appraisal factors, preventive measures, self-efficacy, and willingness to incur cost of prevention, together with the individual perceived need to protect self, directly and positively affect users’ need to develop a protection strategy in a cloud computing environment. A simple relationship between parameters derived from a13C NMR isotopomer analysis and O2 consumption is presented that allows measurement of the absolute rate of acetyl-CoA oxidation and anaplerotic flux in tissues oxidizing a mixture of four substrates. The method was first applied in a study of the effects of work state and -adrenergic stimulation on net acetate oxidation and anaplerosis in the isolated working rat heart. The results demonstrate that the anticipated ratio of 2 between O2 consumption and TCA cycle flux for hearts oxidizing only acetate holds at low workload when anaplerosis is low, but deviates toward a factor of 3 under high workload conditions when anaplerosis is increased. This analysis was also extended to hearts that oxidize a more physiological mixture of substrates including long-chain fatty acids, acetoacetate, lactate, pyruvate, and glucose. We show that the contribution each substrate makes to total TCA cycle flux can be determined by combined13C NMR and O2 consumption measurements. The present study also demonstrates that stimulation of anaplerosis (by addition of propionate) can significantly alter the relative contribution each substrate makes to total TCA cycle flux. We conclude that if13C labeling patterns are selected appropriately, a comprehensive picture of flux through all major metabolic pathways feeding the cycle can be determined in a single experiment even when complex physiological mixtures of substrates are provided.  相似文献
