BACKGROUND: Fusarium graminearum and F. verticillioides are two very important mycotoxigenic species as they cause diverse diseases in crops. The effects of constant and cycling temperatures on growth and mycotoxin production of these species were studied on soybean based medium and on irradiated soya beans. RESULTS: F. graminearum grew better when was incubated at 15, 20 and 15–20 °C (isothermal or cycling temperature) during 21 days of incubation. Maximum levels of zearalenone and deoxynivalenol (39.25 and 1040.4 µg g?1, respectively) were detected on soya beans after 15 days of incubation and the optimal temperature for mycotoxin production was 15 °C for zearalenone and 20 °C for deoxynivalenol. F. verticillioides grew better at 25 °C in culture medium and at 15/20 °C and 15/25 °C on soybean seeds. Fumonisin B1 was produced only in culture medium, and the maximum level (7.38 µg g?1) was found at 15 °C after 7 days of incubation. CONCLUSION: When growth and mycotoxin production under cycling temperatures were predicted from the results under constant conditions, observed values were different from calculated for both species and substrate medium. Therefore, care should be taken if data at constant temperature conditions are to be extrapolated to real field conditions. Copyright © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

In this work the use of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) for cross‐linking of chitosan hydrogel beads was studied at the level of 1 mmol TEOS per gram of chitosan. They were compared with glutaraldehyde and epichlorohydrin cross‐linked beads. The hydrogels were characterized by FTIR, SEM, water content, nitrogen content, and their point of zero charge. The performance of the anionic dye Remazol Black (RB) and the cationic Cd(II) adsorptions was assessed in order to characterize the sorbate–sorbent interaction. Adsorption experimental data were analyzed using two‐ and three‐parameter isotherm models along with the evaluation of mean adsorption energy and standard free energy. The adsorption was observed to be pH dependent. The uptake rate of RB and Cd(II) showed that the three type of beads followed a similar kinetic behavior. For both sorbates the TEOS cross‐linked beads showed the higher maximum adsorption capacity, followed by epichlorohydrin and glutaraldehyde cross‐linked beads. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of two procyanidins isolated from an ethyl acetate extract of laurel wood against a selection of foodborne pathogens. The analysis of the extract by HPLC–DAD/ESI–MS allowed us to detect the presence of two procyanidins, which were selectively isolated and identified by chromatographic and spectroscopic means as cinnamtannin B‐1 ( 1 ) and procyanidin B‐2 ( 2 ). Procyanidins 1 and 2 exhibited two biological activities: inhibition of bacterial growth at high concentrations and prevention of biofilm formation at lower concentrations. Synergistic effect was also detected when both compounds were tested in combination against Listeria monocytogenes. Significant effects were also detected on disruption of preformed biofilm. The ability of procyanidins to inhibit microbial growth and biofilm formation and to synergistically work with each other may stimulate a market as natural food preservatives, and/or natural sanitisers for processing equipment where foodborne pathogens reside.  相似文献

In this article, we present a simple methodology for obtaining algorithms to estimate surface water vapour pressure (e 0) over cloud-free land areas using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. The algorithm obtained in this case is adapted to the particular climatic characteristics of the Asturias region, but the methodology can easily be extrapolated and used to obtain algorithms for other regions around the world. The proposed method estimates e 0 from a simple linear combination of the radiances of the MODIS near-infrared (NIR) channels more commonly applied to total precipitable water (W) estimations. Comparison between the e 0 data measured at the ground-based meteorological stations in Asturias (daily data from 2004) versus the values predicted using the proposed algorithm gives R 2 = 0.76 and residual standard error (RSE) = 2.07 hPa (16%). The algorithm was tested using the data from 2008 obtained in Asturias and in two sites outside of Asturias with similar latitudes and radiosonde observations (La Coruña and Santander). The resulting validation demonstrates that the algorithm gives good results in Asturias (root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) = 2.50 hPa (19%) and bias = 1.26 hPa, with R 2 = 0.65) and when La Coruña is included (R 2 = 0.61), but that its validity is decreased when Santander is also included (R 2 = 0.56).

The possibility of obtaining e 0 from three global MODIS algorithms for W retrieval was also tested and compared to our algorithm. The results show that our algorithm gives better results than the International MODIS/Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder Processing Package (IMAPP) Water Vapour Near-Infrared (WVNIR) product and the Sobrino algorithm. The MODIS Total Precipitable Water (MOD05) product is worse than that obtained with our algorithm in Asturias (R 2 = 0.61 vs. R 2 = 0.65), but the two values are similar if the stations in La Coruña (R 2 = 0.60) and Santander (R 2 = 0.56) are included in the comparison. The dominant advantage of the novel algorithm proposed in this study is that it is simpler and can be produced quickly in real time.  相似文献

Carbon fiber-reinforced polymers, used in primary structures for aircraft due to an excellent strength-to-weight ratio when compared with conventional aluminium alloy counterparts, may nowadays be considered as mature structural materials. Their use has been extended in recent decades, with several aircraft manufacturers delivering fuselages entirely manufactured with carbon composites and using advanced processing technologies. However, one of the main drawbacks of using such composites entails their poor electrical conductivity when compared with aluminium alloy competitors that leads to lightning strikes being considered a significant threat during the service life of the aircraft. Traditionally, this problem was overcome with the use of a protective copper/bronze mesh that added additional weight and reduced the effectiveness of use of the material. Moreover, this traditional sizing method is based on vast experimental campaigns carried out by subjecting composite panels to simulated lightning strike events. While this method has proven its validity, and is necessary for certification of the structure, it may be optimized with the aid provided by physically based numerical models. This paper presents a model based on the finite element method that includes the sources of damage observed in a lightning strike, such as thermal damage caused by Joule overheating and electromagnetic/acoustic pressures induced by the arc around the attachment points. The results of the model are compared with lightning strike experiments carried out in a carbon woven composite.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The replacement of some synthetic food antioxidants by safe natural antioxidants has fostered research on the screening of raw materials to find new vegetable sources of antioxidants. In this study the antioxidant activity of eight wild‐growing Colombian plants was assessed by four complementary assays. RESULTS: An evaluation of the antioxidant activity of ten ethanolic extracts from Baccharis chilco, Cinnamomum triplinerve, Ilex laurina, Lachemilla orbiculata, Lepechinia conferta, Quercus humboldtii, Rubus urticifolius and Tephrosia cinerea was carried out. Furthermore, the total phenolic content was determined by the Folin–Ciocalteu method, and the relationship between phenolic content and activity was also statistically investigated. Cinnamomum triplinerve, L. conferta and I. laurina were found to have the highest phenolic contents. Baccharis chilco, C. triplinerve, I. laurina, L. conferta, Q. humboldtii and R. urticifolius showed higher radical‐scavenging activity (DPPH and superoxide assays) than commercial rosemary oleoresin (reference). Lachemilla orbiculata and R. urticifolius showed higher antioxidant activity (β‐carotene‐bleaching test) than the reference. The protection factor of all studied plant extracts was below that of the reference according to the Rancimat test. CONCLUSION: On the basis of the results obtained, C. triplinerve, Q. humboldtii and R. urticifolius seem to be the most promising species for further investigation in order to identify the compounds responsible for their activity. Summary We present the results on the relationship between the bonding number (the number of links among the authors of an article) and a measure of group cohesiveness on a Likert-type scale in three research areas, Biotechnology, Mathematics and Physics, at the National University of Mexico (UNAM). We found a difference between disciplines with regard to group size, and although there is little difference between disciplines in cohesiveness, results suggest that there is a direct relationship between the level of cohesiveness and the bonding number in Physics and Biotechnology, but not in Mathematics where the groups are much smaller.  相似文献

In this work, we study the capacitive properties of gel-type natural abundant polymers without any dopants, mainly commercial gelatin and agar in deionized water. Here, we propose a facile fabrication of flexible, transparent, and planar electrolytic capacitors using these gel-type and indium tin oxide thin films as electrodes deposited on poly(ethylene terephthalate) substrates. Through cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge–discharge techniques, we found that the devices show a specific capacitance in the order of the millifarads per gram, a specific power of ~10 mW cm−2, which is sufficient to active low-power devices, and a life cycle with nearly 100% efficiency after 1,000 cycles. We found that we do not need to add dopants that improve the ionic conductivity of the natural polyelectrolytes to obtain capacitances within the millifarads per gram. The flexibility of the capacitors was demonstrated by bending them, after which they exhibited the same electrochemical performance as the unbent devices. The optical transparency of the capacitors was measured by UV–V is spectroscopy showing a high transmittance in the visible region.  相似文献
