The dried bean beetle, Acanthoscelides obtectus, is an economically important, worldwide pest of legume crops including dry beans, Phaseolus vulgaris. Assessment of A. obtectus infestation levels in pre-harvest field crops and post-harvest granaries is difficult to achieve because there is no effective monitoring tool for early detection so that interventions can be deployed as needed. Because A. obtectus is a generic pollen and nectar feeder, we adopted an electrophysiological (EAG) screening approach, using the antennae of female A. obtectus to identify physiologically active, volatile phytochemicals, which could then be investigated for their attractiveness to A. obtectus in laboratory behavioral assays and preliminary field tests. Of the 27 compounds tested in EAG screening, 5 compounds, i.e., methyl anthranilate, methyl eugenol, benzyl alcohol, (RS)-lavandulol, and 2-phenylethanol, elicited stronger EAG responses than the standard (1-phenylethanol). In 4-arm olfactometer bioassays, female A. obtectus preferred the olfactometer arm containing the odor of either methyl anthranilate or benzyl alcohol compared to the solvent control. In preliminary field tests using these 2 compounds as a binary mixture, at least 5 times as many beetles were caught on baited traps compared to non-baited traps. The field data also suggested that benzyl alcohol was primarily responsible for the field activity of the blend. We hypothesize that the attraction of A. obtectus to the combined benzyl alcohol/methyl anthranilate and the single benzyl alcohol baits is connected to the species` nectar- and pollen-feeding behaviour and not to its intraspecific communication. To our knowledge, this is the first evidence that A. obtectus behavior in the field can be modified by the deployment of plant-derived semiochemicals.

The human gut symbiont Lacticaseibacillus (L.) casei (previously Lactobacillus casei) is under intense research due to its wide range of immunomodulatory effects on the human host. Dendritic cells (DCs) are crucial players in the direct and indirect communication with lactobacilli in the gastrointestinal tract. Here, we demonstrate that human monocyte-derived DCs (moDCs) are able to engulf L. casei BL23, in which the intact bacterial cell wall and morphology have a key role. The absence of the bacterial cell-wall-degrading enzyme, Lc-p75, in L. casei cells causes remarkable morphological changes, which have important consequences in the phagocytosis of L. casei by moDCs. Our results showed that the Lc-p75 mutation induced defective internalization and impaired proinflammatory and T-cell-polarizing cytokine secretion by bacteria-exposed moDCs. The T helper (Th) 1 and Th17 cell activating capacity of moDCs induced by the mutant L. casei was consequently reduced. Moreover, inhibition of the phagocytosis of wild-type bacteria showed similar results. Taken together, these data suggested that formation of short bacterial chains helps to exert the potent immunomodulatory properties of L. casei BL23.  相似文献

Mitragynine (MTR), the main indole alkaloid of the well-known plant kratom (Mitragyna speciosa), is one of the most studied natural products nowadays, due to its remarkable biological effects. It is a partial agonist on the opioid receptors, and as such relieves pain without the well-known side-effects of the opioids applied in the clinical practice. MTR and its derivatives therefore became novel candidates for drug development. The poor aqueous solubility and low bioavailability of drugs are often improved by cyclodextrins (CyDs) as excipients through host-guest type complex formation. Among the wide variety of CyDs, sulfobutylether-beta-cyclodextrin (SBEβCyD) is frequently used and official in the European and U.S. Pharmacopoeia. Herein, the host-guest complexation of MTR with βCyD and SBEβCyD was studied using chiroptical and NMR spectroscopy. It was found by NMR measurements that MTR forms a rather weak (logβ11 = 0.8) 1:1 host-guest complex with βCyD, while the co-existence of the 2MTR∙SBEβCyD and MTR∙SBEβCyD species was deducted from 1H NMR titrations in the millimolar MTR concentration range. Sulfobutylation of βCyD significantly enhanced the affinity towards MTR. The structure of the formed inclusion complex was extensively studied by circular dichroism spectroscopy and 2D ROESY NMR. The insertion of the indole moiety was confirmed by both techniques.  相似文献

With the increasing awareness of the warm asphalt technology, it is imperative to study the properties of the binders containing the warm asphalt additives thoroughly, especially since not much research has been conducted on warm asphalt binder properties to date. Also, in the recent years, researchers have observed that the SHRP rutting parameter G1/sin δ is not very effective in predicting the rutting performance of binders, especially in case of modified binders. Zero shear viscosity (ZSV) has been evaluated to determine its effectiveness in predicting the rutting behavior of asphalt binders. Thus, in this paper, the ZSV of five asphalt binders with and without the warm asphalt additives, Asphamin® and Sasobit®, were calculated using the different models and test methods available in literature. From the test results, it was observed that the addition of the warm asphalt additives increased the ZSV of all the five binders used in this study. It was also observed that the different test methods gave different ZSV values, and that the selection of the test methods and the testing parameters are crucial parameters.  相似文献

An improvement in the clinical results obtained using total body irradiation (TBI) with photon beams requires precise TBI treatment planning, reproducible irradiation, precise in vivo dosimetry, accurate documentation and careful evaluation. In vivo dosimetry using LiF Harshaw TLD-100 chips was used during the TBI treatments performed in our department. The results of in vivo thermoluminescence dosimetry (TLD) show that using TLD measurements and interactive adjustment of some treatment parameters based on these measurements, like monitor unit calculations, lung shielding thickness and patient positioning, it is possible to achieve high precision in absorbed dose delivery (less than 0.5%) as well as in homogeneity of irradiation (less than 6%).  相似文献

In this paper we propose a Connection Admission Control (CAC) algorithm to provide Quality of Service (QoS) in UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Networks (UTRAN). In UTRAN, the main QoS requirement is to ensure low packet delays. The CAC algorithm works with priority scheduling, which is used for QoS differentiation. We give a detailed investigation on the performance implications of applying priority scheduler. We provide novel closed-form formulae which are fast, simple and accurate enough for practical implementation of the CAC. A comprehensive performance evaluation study with illustrative numerical examples is also presented. The results are validated by simulations.  相似文献

Transport properties of the osmotically fragile strain VY1160 of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were compared with those of the parent S288c strain. Mediated diffusion of 6-deoxy-D-glucose was practically unaffected; membrane-potential-dependent transport of D-glucosamine was very much depressed in the fragile strain. The H+-driven transport of L-lysine and L-proline, as well as that of the hitherto uninvestigated D-glucose-6-phosphate, were also very depressed. 2-Deoxy-D-glucose transport displayed slightly different kinetic parameters. Primary H+ extrusion by the plasma membrane H-ATPase was not diminished although the ATP-splitting activity was depressed by about 50%. The overall proton-motive force (pmf) of the fragile mutant at pH 5.5 was only 20 mV while in the parent strain it was 108 mV. In parallel with this, spontaneous acidification of the external medium (a CO2-associated event) was only about 2% of that in the parent strain. The defect in this, together with the inability to stimulate transport protein synthesis by glucose, may account for the generally poorer transport performance of the fragile mutant.  相似文献
