An efficient and inexpensive method for the detailed simulation of liquid/solid flows with a high content of large solid particles is presented. In a finite volume context, a fixed Cartesian grid is used to discretize the equations of motion for the liquid phase. The same fixed grid is also used to represent the location of the solid particles by imposing the velocities on the nodes covered by the particles at any time. The new positions and the new velocities of the particles are updated using Newton’s law so that there is no need to re-mesh the domain. Despite the simplicity of the well-known Cartesian Grid Method, the originality and interest of the present approach lies in its use for coupling the liquid and solid phases, and in the efficient way in which the surface forces governing the motion of the particles are computed. The approach is validated using a series of simple test cases, and, as an illustration, an application relevant to the design of tubular heat exchangers for food processing is highlighted. 相似文献

In the fight against prostate cancer (PCa), TRPM8 is one of the most promising clinical targets. Indeed, several studies have highlighted that TRPM8 involvement is key in PCa progression because of its impact on cell proliferation, viability, and migration. However, data from the literature are somewhat contradictory regarding the precise role of TRPM8 in prostatic carcinogenesis and are mostly based on in vitro studies. The purpose of this study was to clarify the role played by TRPM8 in PCa progression. We used a prostate orthotopic xenograft mouse model to show that TRPM8 overexpression dramatically limited tumor growth and metastasis dissemination in vivo. Mechanistically, our in vitro data revealed that TRPM8 inhibited tumor growth by affecting the cell proliferation and clonogenic properties of PCa cells. Moreover, TRPM8 impacted metastatic dissemination mainly by impairing cytoskeleton dynamics and focal adhesion formation through the inhibition of the Cdc42, Rac1, ERK, and FAK pathways. Lastly, we proved the in vivo efficiency of a new tool based on lipid nanocapsules containing WS12 in limiting the TRPM8–positive cells’ dissemination at metastatic sites. Our work strongly supports the protective role of TRPM8 on PCa progression, providing new insights into the potential application of TRPM8 as a therapeutic target in PCa treatment. 相似文献

The increasing presence of automation between operators and automated systems tends to disrupt operators from action outcomes, leading them to leave the control loop. The theoretical framework of agency suggests that priming the operator about the system’s upcoming behaviour could help restore an appropriate sense of control and increase user acceptance of what the system is doing. In a series of two experiments, we test whether providing information about what the system is about to do next leads to an increase in the level of user acceptance, concomitant with an increase in control and performance. Using an aircraft supervision task, we demonstrated the benefit of prime messages regarding system acceptance and performance. Taken together, our results indicate that the principles proposed by this framework could be used to improve human–machine interaction and maintain a high level of sense of control in supervisory tasks.
Practitioner Summary: The out-of-the-loop performance problem is a major potential consequence of automation, leaving operators helpless to takeover automation in case of failure. Using an aircraft supervision task, the following article illustrates how the psychological approach of agency can help improving human–system interactions by designing more acceptable and more controllable automated interfaces 相似文献

In the present study, the authors examined transitions between postural coordination modes involved in human stance. The analysis was motivated by dynamical theories of pattern formation, in which coordination modes and transitions between modes are emergent, self-organized properties of the dynamics of animal-environment systems. In 2 experiments, standing participants tracked a moving target with the head. Results are consistent with the hypothesis that changes in body coordination follow typical nonequilibrium, phase transitions, exhibiting multistability, bifurcation, critical fluctuations, hysteresis, and critical slowing down. The findings suggest that posture may be organized in terms of dynamical principles and favor the existence of general and common principles governing pattern formation and flexibility in complex systems.
