A diplexer based on an open resonator with corrugated mirrors

A diplexer with a resonance frequency of 34 GHz has been created based on a four-mirror ring resonator with two corrugated mirrors. When the incident wave frequency varies by more than 20 MHz, the output wave beam is completely switched from one direction to another. A diplexer of this type can be used for discrete frequency scanning of high-power wave beams in systems for the suppression of the hydrodynamic instabilities of plasma in magnetic traps. Such diplexers can also be combined so as to form a multiplexer, which can be used in long-range multichannel communication and radar systems with synthesized frequency bands.     

Pulmonary and systemic fat embolization after medullary canal pressurization: a hemodynamic and histologic investigation in the dog

BACKGROUND: The potential to produce fat embolism may be important in determining the ideal method and timing of fracture treatment in patients with preexisting lung injury. METHODS: Four dogs underwent femoral and tibial canal reaming and pressurization. Blood gas samples were analyzed, and pulmonary arterial pressure was monitored at 1 and 72 hours. Animals were killed 72 hours postoperatively, and the lungs, kidneys, and brain were examined histologically and compared with equivalent specimens from four control dogs that had not undergone femoral and tibial canal reaming and pressurization. RESULTS: Postmortem, intravascular fat persisted for 72 hours after induction of pulmonary fat embolism. Mean PaO2 was unchanged from baseline at 72 hours after canal pressurization. Canal pressurization caused a sustained increase in pulmonary arterial pressure (p=0.02) for 1 hour after canal pressurization. The mean pulmonary edema score at 72 hours was 29+/-3. Only a scant polymorph infiltrate (zero to two polymorphs per high-power field) was present at any time. No hyaline membranes were seen at any time. The percentage area occupied by intravascular fat in the lungs was 0.0214+/-0.0058 at 72 hours. No signs of ischemia or inflammation were seen in either the cerebral or the renal specimens. CONCLUSION: This study is the first to show that intravascular fat persists in the lungs, kidneys, and brain for 72 hours after canal pressurization and, by itself, does not cause pathologic evidence of acute inflammation.     

An APS with 2-D winner-take-all selection employing adaptive spatial filtering and false alarm reduction

An active pixel sensor (APS) with two-dimensional winner-take-all (WTA) detection is presented. This system-on-a-chip employs adaptive spatial filtering of the processed image, with bad pixel elimination and false alarm reduction in case of a missing object. The circuit has a unique ability of adaptive spatial filtering that allows removal of the background from the image, one stage before it is transferred to the WTA detection circuit. A test chip of a 64/sup */64 array has been implemented in 0.5-/spl mu/m CMOS technology, has a 49% fill factor, is operated by a 3.3-V supply, and dissipates 36 mW at video rate. System architecture and operation are discussed and measurements from the prototype chip are presented.

Periclase-Carbon Refractories from the Kombinat Magnezit JSC for Use in Converter Steelmaking Technology at the Magnitogorskii Metal-and-Steel Works JSC

Cooperation between the Kombinat Magnezit Joint-Stock Co. and Magnitogorskii Metal-and-Steel Works Joint-Stock Co. in the area of exploitation of converter refractories is briefly outlined. Prospects for further improvement of the performance characteristics of refractories and converter design are discussed.     

TAKING ACTION AGAINST JOB-RELATED INJURY

On a quick walk through a typical IS department, you're likely to see programmers and technical writers hunched over video display terminals (VDTs) and systems analysts twisted in their chairs, reaching for files while entering data. Administrative assistants will be squinting at screens, balancing telephone receivers on one shoulder while attempting to take down messages. Not an unusual scene.
