In this review, recent progress in understanding the direct effects of radiation on the structure and stability of collagen, the most abundant protein in the human body, and other proteins is surveyed. Special emphasis is placed on the triple-helical structure of collagen, as studied by means of collagen mimetic peptides. The emerging patterns are the dose dependence of radiation processes and their abundance, the crucial role of radicals in covalent-bond formation (crosslinking) or cleavage, and the influence of the radiation energy and nature. Future research should allow fundamental questions, such as charge transfer and fragmentation dynamics triggered by ionization, to be answered, as well as developing applications such as protein-based biomaterials, notably with properties controlled by irradiation.  相似文献

This paper deals with an acronym/de nition extraction approach from textual data (corpora) and the disambiguation of these de nitions (or expansions). Both steps of our global process of acquisition and management of acronyms are precisely described. The first step consists in using markers such as brackets to identify expansion candidates. The alignment of the letters allows to select the acronym/de nition couples. The second step is to de ne the relevant expansion of an acronym in a given context. Our method is based on statistical measurements (Mutual Information, Cubic Mutual Information, Dice Measure) and the results provided by search engines. Understanding the links between aerosol and cloud and radiative properties remains a large uncertainty in predicting Earth's changing energy budget. Surfactants are observed in ambient atmospheric aerosol particles, and their effect on cloud droplet growth is a mechanism that was, until recently, neglected in model calculations of particle activation and droplet growth. In this study, coarse mode aqueous aerosol particles were created containing the surfactant Igepal CA-630 and NaCl. The evaporation and condensation of these individual aqueous particles were investigated using an aerosol optical trap combined with Raman spectroscopy. For a relative humidity (RH) change from 70% to 80%, droplets containing both Igepal and NaCl at atmospheric concentrations exhibited on average more than 4% larger changes in droplet radii, compared to droplets containing NaCl only. This indicates enhanced water uptake in the presence of surfactants, but this result is unexpected based on the standard calculation of the effect of surfactants, using surface tension reduction and/or hygroscopicity changes, for particles of this size. One implication of these results is that in periods with increasing RH, surfactant-containing aqueous particles may grow larger than similarly sized aqueous NaCl particles without surfactants, thus shifting atmospheric particle size distributions, influencing particle growth, and affecting aerosol loading, visibility, and radiative forcing.

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) injected intravenously are trapped in the capillaries of the lungs and die within the first 24 h. Studying the biodistribution and fate of labelled therapeutic cells in the 3D pulmonary context is important to understand their function in this organ and gain insights into their mechanisms of action. Optical tissue clearing enables volumetric cell tracking at single-cell resolution. Thus, we compared three optical tissue-clearing protocols (Clear, Unobstructed Brain/Body Imaging Cocktails and Computational analysis (CUBIC), modified stabilised 3D imaging of solvent-cleared organs (s-DISCO) and ethyl cinnamate (ECi)) to evaluate their potential to track the biodistribution of human umbilical cord MSCs expressing the tdTomato fluorescence reporter and investigate how they interact with host cells in the mouse lung. The results showed that although CUBIC clearing is the only method that enables direct imaging of fluorescently labelled MSCs, combining s-DISCO or ECi with immunofluorescence or dye labelling allows the interaction of MSCs with endothelial and immune cells to be studied. Overall, this comparative study offers guidance on selecting an optical tissue-clearing method for cell tracking applications.  相似文献
